Our family of 4 stayed at the Cozumel Place over New Year's 12/29/07 to 1/5/08. Believe the reviews about great service at this hotel, they are true. The hotel was fully booked but never seemed crowded at all and excellent service was the norm. Please tip these folks well, they do not expect it but they truly deserve it! This was our first time at an all-inclusive and I would say for Mexico, the food was good to very good. Our best dining experience was at the Japenese restaurant albeit the Itallian and outdoor grill are nice choices as well.
If you are a couple, I would recommend the forth or fifth floor on the far north (preferable) or south end of the hotel. These rooms have great views and offer a more noise-free experience in the hallways at night. They are also designated as no-smoking floors (at least in the hallways). If you plan on having 4 persons in a room, I would suggest one of the twelve 2br loft rooms they have on the main floor on the southern end of the hotel. Yes, they can be louder than the rooms on the upper floors but you have almost twice the room of the standard suite. They have a king bed on the main level with a full bath, a large jacuzzi and 2 double beds in the loft with another full bath. We stayed in loft room 108 which halfway between the kitchen and the service entrance. That sounds bad but it wasn't at all. Yes you will hear carts going up and down the halls at various times during the evening but we brought disposable ear plugs and had no problems at all (the kids in the loft didn't even need them at all). It is definitely better than trying to squeeze 4 people into a room with 2 double beds. The loft rooms with the least amount of noise (comparatively speaking) with the better view (considering they are on the main level) would probably be 107-109. Rooms 101 to 106 are OK but the view in 101 & 102 may be obstructed and the remaining are in close proximity to the service entrance and hotel laundry facility (on the second floor). Rooms 110 - 112 may also be undesirable because of their closer proximity to the kitchen entrance and partially obstructed view.
We took the Chankanaab and Tulum tours as part of our package through the Cozumel Palace. Personally, I thought Chankanaab was a dissappointment. I knew Wilma had destroyed a lot of the coral in this area but not to this extent. Very few coral formations remain in the snorkel area of this park so don't waste the $10/per person for snorkel gear. My kids found the snorkeling at the hotel much better. At this time probably the best places to snorkel are on the southern end of the island at the Columbia Shallows or Punta Sur. Bottom-line, the best way to really see some good coral formations and under-sea life would be by boat. The Tulum tour was very good. I would highly recommend you bring some very comfortable walking shoes since the walk from the parking lot to, as well as around the site is quite long. You can swim at Tulum as part of this tour. If you take the entire guided tour you will have about 30 minutes to swim.
The Cozumel Palace is a great place to stay in Cozumel. It is less than 1/2 mile walking distance to Punta Lagosta Mall and only a short, pleasurable 1 mile walk to the center of San Miguel. There is a Walmart type store directly across the street with very reasonable pricing. The staff is great and strives to make your stay fun and pleasurable and the facilites are kept close to immaculate.
