My wife and I just returned from our first visit to Cozumel. For several reasons, we decided to split our trip between two hotels. The first 4 nights we stayed at the El Presidente and the last 5 were booked at the Sol Cabanas de Caribe (see separate review) but ended up at the Melia. Please note that while we do expect a certain degree of service and cleanliness, we are not overly picky folks and don't expect (or want) to be pampered. That being said...
I found the Presidente to be outstanding in nearly every respect. First I must mention the fact that all the staff we dealt with during our stay here were helpful, friendly and very nice. As we were checking in, a waiter showed up to offer us glasses of champagne even!!! I don't know if we looked like honeymooners or if everyone had this treatment, but we sure dug it! We were in room 3102 (the least expensive option that I found on their website) and it was absolutely fantastic. It was ground floor/garden view, and I am very happy that we didn't spend any more for a different room. I was literally 60 steps (yes, I counted) from the sandy, nearly deserted beach area. Showering was just like back home with plenty of pressure and hot water, and there was a tub if your into that sort of thing. The sink area was separate from the WC, and had a large mirror and plenty of room for the wife to spread out all here beautification tools :) Yeah, the beds here are hard. That suited us, though, we like 'em firm. The air conditioning was fine, it was a little chilly when we first got there, but an adjustment or two later it was just right. The patio was very nice, and used this area to enjoy our morning coffee while planning our day.
The beach areas were all well groomed and clean, with nice recliners under palpas for shade. We were in the most northern beach area, and it only had a handful of recliners and palpas. IMHO this is THE spot, as the pool area and other beach areas were pretty crowded. It was almost like nobody even knew this area existed. The towels that they provide are very nice, soft and fluffy and absolutely HUGE. Entrance to the ocean is super easy, with several ladders descending into the water. Snorkeling here is very good, we saw tons of fish, an eagle ray,and several barracuda, just to name a fraction of the marine life. For the younger ones, there is an easy sloping, sandy entrance to the ocean that is marked off with buoys. The pool was warm and very clean, but the "hot" tub was more like a "warmer-than-the-pool" tub, and some people there were complaining bitterly about this. I sure as heck didn't let a silly thing like that get on my nerves on vacation!!!
We had drinks one day at the bar during happy hour, and if memory serves, it was 2 for 1, and I think that applied to cocktails as well as beer. Also had some chips and guacamole that was a bit pricey, but worth it. Our total bill came to $17.00 for 6 Dos Equis ($1.50 each) and the $8.00 chips & dip... not to shabby! We also ate at the breakfast buffet one day and loved the food. There were plenty of different hot and cold items, including made-to-order omelets. It was very expensive for my lifestyle though, at around $30 per person, and we went shopping for bananas, peanut butter, and bread. All other meals we ate in town, so I can't comment on either the open-air grill or the Italian restaurant.
There is free internet access in the lobby to the left of the "check-in" desk, and we used this to keep in touch with friends and family during our stay. There are two desktops there, as well as what assumed to be a network connection for a laptop. They even have a printer (which we used to print out a list of commonly used phrases en espanol), scanner, and fax. Our first day there one of the ladies in the lobby engaged our attention and attempted to sell us side tours, but we are "do-it-yourself" vacationers and she accepted that with good grace. No one ever attempted to sell us time shares or attempted to give us "stuff" if we listened to a 1 hour spiel, so that was nice.
I noticed one odd thing about this hotel... every time we left the room, someone went into it for one reason or another. I still haven't figured out whether or not this was a coincidence, or if they somehow knew when we left. There were subtle signs all over the pace such as a shampoo bottle being closed, the picture on the wall being VERY crooked, mints appearing, ect. I'm not complaining about this mind you, it just seemed odd to me. Add to this the fact that my wife ended up missing one fake diamond earring and you might be ask yourself did she loose it or was somebody over-tempted. We are 99% sure it just got lost though.
We did not use the on-site dive operation (Scuba Du), so if you are planning on diving, do some research on them before you book this hotel based on the fact that they are here. I heard some grumblings from the divers at the bar about overcrowding and such.
All in all, we were very happy with the property and would stay here again if I wasn't so darn cheap ha ha. We did rent a jeep for our entire 9 day stay and would not even consider doing anything else. Taxis do not cut it for our needs, but there were plenty to be had for trips into town or elsewhere. Please don't rent a scooter in Cozumel! Sorry if I offend any scooter rental people, but I saw too many accidents and a hospital is no place to spend a vacation.
