I have been staying at El P for 26 years (I started as a child (;-)... It is clearly the finest property on the island.
There is no equal. It has gone through many incantations, El President, Stouffers (The bad years) and now under the Inter-Continental flag, (which is a division of Holiday Inn, which is kinda funny, since it used to be the Pan Am WorldAirways Flagship)...
Now under a new and superb general manager, the property has really emerged as a world-class act. The new pasta restaurant (with a very pompous name) is really great and has a fine (though pricey) wine list. The luncheon and breakfast restaurant is just fine. We eat there and usually go into town for dinner, though we do highly suggest the El P's main evening restaurant. They do have a wee problem with "no smoking" as many of their Mexican and European clients will just light up a cigar or pipe just as you are about to enjoy a fine wine and a lovely dinner. INSIST on a totally no-smoking section, as sometimes your table is the only no-smoking section, a typical euro problem.
In town, try Pepe's and La Mission. (there are 3 of those), and Capi Naviganti... all have a/c, which is required for a meal with us. Get a beach-front, lower level room, avoid the tower. haggle about the price, ask for a better deal. The staff is wonderful, so very friendly, so very thoughtful and really nice.
Diving is great, and Alphonso is the finest dive master I have worked with in 40 years of commercial diving all over the world. He certified our 15-year-old daughter, and he is totally the very best. Ask for him by name.
Yes, Coz is over-dived, and there are far too many cruise ships, but enjoy it while you can at the I-C, and though it is a bit more expensive than the other hotels, it is clearly the very best Coz has to offer. Do rent a car for a day and drive around the island to see the wild East Caribbean coast, which is totally undeveloped, though there are some fun little beach restaurants, though none take credit cards, as there is no power or phone service to the wild side. It is really lovely! You can actually surf there!
Coz has not really changed too much in my 26-years there, the new hotels are really spread out. Avoid those "all-inclusive" rip-offs at all costs. They should all go bankrupt.
You can easily snorkel or beach-dive right from the hotel. A taxi is about $5 into town, and the warm service and hospitality cannot be beaten anywhere on the island.
We have had the very good fortune to stay at the finest hotels all over the world, from Austria to Zanzibar, and the I-C Coz is truly one of the best. We give it our highest "island hotel" rating... but remember, this is not Paris or Cannes.
