Stayed here for 8 days for a much needed vacation with my hubby. We stayed here 10 yrs ago for our honeymoon and it has indeed changed for the better. The service was great and everyone always had a smile and pleasant greeting whenever they saw you. They are also very accommodating. We got a free room upgrade so the view was fabulous and the suite was large with a HUGE bath with separate toilet closet and big shower, double vanity and large sunken tub. Nice decor, big walk in closet with a room safe. They gym facility was nice and clean, though could be a little larger, and the hotel beach is great. We went to Chankanaab as that was the most affordable excursion and we did it on our own. The cab ride to downtown is only $5 each way but we also rented a car for a few days to explore the other side. The beaches on the other side are great-check out Playa St. Martin and Playa Bonita. Very pretty and there is another beach the locals go with their families called Playa Chen Rio that has a lagoon area protected by the reef where the water gently splashes over the rocks into the lagoon creating some cool little waterfalls and gentle conditions in a shallow area-so it's great for kids. Wish we would've been able to go to those beaches more often. Chankanaab has changed too, and they really push the dolphin encounter which is overpriced, so we just snorkeled. The snorkeling is good, though since Hurricane Wilma, there seems to be less fish/coral to see close to shore. The resort's spa is WAY overpriced-something like $110 for 50 minutes is the cheapest massage and if you want 80 minutes, it's $140(not including an 18% service charge plus 10% tax)! I nearly fell over when I saw those prices-that's more than I pay in the states at a high end spa! AND be aware that the "massage therapists" are not necessarily certified nor professionally trained-you don't need certification to give massages in Cozumel. Instead, I recommend an ex-pat who has her own massage business in town called http://www.barefootincozumel.com/ which we found on tripadvisor. She only charges $60 for a full hour, and is very professional and good. She even gave us some suggestions for good restaurants and the only chocolate shop on the island. Plus, she followed up afterwards with emails of suggested stretching poses. She has certification from the states too, and her name is Sally Hurwith.
The food was okay-nothing to write home about as they say, though the burgers are good. We even tried Alfredo's one night, but instead of that, I'd recommend a place in town called Sorrisi. It's near the pizza hut and is excellent!! The menu has a huge selection, and I had the cannelloni (homemade pasta no less and very good) while my husband had the margarita pizza. Also very good and baked in a real brick oven. The chef/owner is Sicilian, so anything Sicilian would be good. They also had an excellent wine list. I had a Riesling Sangria-yum! And the prices are very reasonable. Whereas the hotel food is VERY pricey, but it is artfully presented and convenient-sometimes the chef gave free little samples of appetizers not on the menu-a nice perk.
I do not recommend Carlos n' Charlies in town-unless you like loud, obnoxious atmosphere and mediocre overpriced food.
The business center has 2 computers and was very valuable to us for the duration of our stay-use it to research places before you go here on tripadvisor.
The hotel was also very clean and the room service was thorough and left fresh hibiscus flowers and "towel critters" all around the room after cleaning. They had nice quality toiletries, and a nice touch was the straw beach bags they had in each room with 2 beach towels you could use wherever you went. The TV however, could use more stations, and picture quality was poor. Movies cost $12 to watch.
The town has a free band play every sunday night in the town square, and all the locals come hang out and you can dance and have a good time. There is also a newer grocery store called Mega not far from the Chedraui grocery where you can pick up snacks and drinks. There are about 4 cruise ships in port a day, so beware of those crowds when you want to go into town.
The only thing that really bugged us during our stay, was the constant harrassment to buy excursions through the hotel, or to sit through a sales seminar of some sort for a free breakfast. When we checked in we were greeted with a nice cool wet towel and a refreshing citrus beverage to cool off-very nice, however before we knew it we were whisked away to a desk on the opposite side of the lobby for what seemed a hotel orientation. I thought something was fishy, but I let the lady do her thing, explaining where things were on the resort, places to eat, things to do, and then the kicker. If we came back later that afternoon and sat through a 1.5 hour(or longer) seminar or whatever, we'd get a free breakfast. Supposedly not a timeshare pitch, but obviously they try to sell you something. After a long flight and being awake since 4am that day, we did not appreciate the pressure and abruptly ended the orientation so we could go rest. But every time we ventured into the lobby, we'd be approached and questioned which annoyed us and happened so often that my husband just resorted to raising his hand up as a "not interested" sign. As long you know to expect this, you can avoid it and they are at least cordial, but it was bothersome. Do your research ahead of time and get prices for excursions so you can compare and make an informed choice, but be warned, it is NOT cheap! Xel-ha and Xcaret are very pricey-they can be over $200 per couple and that doesn't always include the ferry over from the main land.
Also, make sure you have something to cover up at happy hour as that is also mosquito hour! I got bit 9 times in less than 5 minutes. But the 2 for 1 happy hour is great! Getting a cab is very easy and they also have an ATM in the lobby that gives US dollars. We paid in pesos everywhere since they exchange rate was good, but make sure you are quoted pesos as well as dollars.
The pools were very nice-the adult pool is nice and secluded though the family pool was never loud or even being used when we sat nearby. I brought my own snorkel gear, but you can rent it on the beach at the hotel.
The locals are also nice and pretty friendly and most speak english, though I used what little Spanish I know when I could. We would come here again, and know next time to avoid the "orientation"!
