First I have to say that I read everything I could get my hands on via internet and offline as well to figure out the best place to stay.
I went through Expedia and selected the Presidente.
I cannot say enough about this hotel.
First of all, everything you've read about beds being hard as a rock is true. That's the ONLY negative thing I can say about this hotel.
I will go back there again.
I got 2 adjoining rooms, garden view.
Oceanview = elevators. I don't like being on an elevator with people just in from swimming/sunbathing, etc. But that's just me.
I preferred the rather quick walk from my room. The beach was just yards away and oceanview was about $40/night more and it simply wasn't worth it to me. I got my oceanview by being in it. I rarely saw anyone spending that much time on their balconies enjoying the view anyway.
The rooms are huge. The floors are marble tile. There could be a little more clothing storage space.
There was a minibar in each room with cigarettes, liquour, softdrinks, etc in it. Soft drinks were about 2.50 from it.
Every day there were fresh flowers (hibiscus) in our rooms on our table and at the lavatory.
The bath towels are huge and you were given a 1.5 liter bottle of purified water each day as well.
The hotel was very clean...EVERYWHERE. There were constantly men working to clean, upkeep, repair, sweep, rake the beach, replace towels, etc, etc, etc.
They were constantly maintaining this place. It was very beautiful.
Was it equivalent to a 4-star hotel in large cities in the U.S.?
I have stayed at the Marriott Marquis in Time Square and some other large, 4-star hotels across the USA and the Presidente is nice and the service is beyond compare.
We were treated like royalty from the moment we arrived till the moment we left. One of the housekeepers ally broke a bottle of my sons cologne, which he probably left in a bad place to start with. She was so upset and so apologetic, I felt bad for her.
The next morning, we had a gorgeous bouquet of fresh flowers including roses in our room and a lovely compote of fresh fruit as an apology. Totally not required by us, as we told them not to worry about it!!
These folks write the book on "service".
Cristobal and Joel, to name a couple, were more than eager to help you get a cab or anything else you needed.
The hotel food was wonderful. Contrary to what I had read, the food was reasonably-priced. $12 for a spinach-stuffed chicken dinner or 8.50 for nachos. More than enough to eat. The service was superb. Breakfast was included in our room charges which I did not expect. It was a great buffet every day. (We also toured the Reef Club and ate their breakfast buffet by invitation and it was stale and in comparison to the Presidente). Lobster was about $35 but I don't eat lobster anyway. A nice, very tasty steak dinner was about $15 and that included soup or salad and dessert.
There was 2-for-1 happy hour at the bar every afternoon.
We ate at the hotel probably 3 of 4 mornings and 2 of 4 evenings. It was no more than we would pay to have eaten at another nice establishment. The only difference was that I was not afraid to eat their food.
Snorkeling here is AS good as any place on the beach. I read that and didn't believe it. It's true!! No need to go anywhere else!
Plenty of reef to see. Lots of fish.......more than I saw at Chankanaab. There is even a sunken barge with lots of fish to see also.
Just walk out your door. The beach is great. Chairs are plentiful w/ shade. Extra large (and quite heavy) beach towels are provided (if you lose the card to get one, it costs you $45). Leave your beach towels at home... you won't need them.
The pool is plenty big and was NEVER full. Everyone seemed to have excursions, snorkeling or scuba trips, and such.
It only rained one day and on that day, we took advantage of the stand managed by a young who had ceramics you could paint and they would shellac them overnight and return them to you. Totally fun and a good way to handle the rain. We painted several things and got them back looking better than anything I saw in the stores. They added a little to them. Very special souveniers to have for Cozumel 2004! The cost ranged from $7.00 and up for each item.
When, not if, I go back to Cozumel, I will definitely stay at the Presidente.
It is the best on the island, in my opinion.
I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE!!!!
