We stayed 4 nights at Presidente in late Feb. It is indeed the best hotel on Cozumel –
Location – 5 min, $5 cab ride from the ferry dock and town center; close enough to shopping/restaurants yet far away enough from the crowds.
Room – simple, elegant, tastefully designed rooms. We stayed at one of the pool view room. The view is adequate with nice beach chairs and rocking chairs outside that provides for a relaxing afternoon just steps away from your room!
Beach – they said Presidente has the best hotel beach on Cozumel. I think that’s a true statement. However, if you’re not here to dive or snorkel, you’d be disappointed by the beach. It LOOKS very nice and clean with thick white sand… BUT, it’s extremely grainy and definitely man-made. So… if you’re looking for nice beach, this is not the best place for you. Tulum and Cacun have the best beaches in the Yucatan.
Service – 5+ service indeed! The front desk staff was less than warm but the rest of the staff was excellent! As most reviewers mentioned, be aware of the nice lady who approaches you upon check-in with drink and cool towel. She would appear very helpful at first and tried to get you to attend the sales meeting of their time share. Just kindly decline.. do not waste your time!
Amenities – We received local fruits and chocolate and strawberries during the first 2 nights there. It’s such a nice touch but not sure why they only offered that for a couple of nights…. it would’ve scored many extra points if they did they throughout the stay. The single cup expresso machine in the room makes mean coffee. Unfortunately, they ran out the next day but hotel did offer to send free coffee.
Facilities - Spa and gym are open to all guests free of charge. We made a lot of use of it during the 2 days when Norte hit.. (northern cold front, windy and chilly, temp mid 60s). Spa is very simple with a very small Jacuzzi and steam room. It could use more work and attention. Tennis courts are grass… think Wimbledon! I wish I brought my racquets.
Restaurants – Dinning is excellent at the beach side café under the palapa and the fine Italian restaurants. The only drawback is the price… not sure if the food warrants such high prices and the miscellaneous cover and service charge.
Overall – I enjoyed the stay at the hotel. However, I can’t say it’s really worth the price you pay. Many have mentioned the hidden charges and yes they’re there… You would end up paying 25-30% more in addition to the room rate for one night for the room only.
Tips – Be sure to stop by the best craft store in town “Los Cincos Soles” (5 suns). Load up on nice souvenirs or things for yourself before you head back to the airport. The store has satellite stores at CUN airport but the prices are 20% higher.
If you’re looking to bring home chilly / hot sauce as souvenir, just buy them at the supermarket on the 25th street or the wal-mart in Playa Del Carman. One bottle is less than a buck v. $2-5 you’ve to pay at the airport or souvenir shops.
