I decided to go spearfishing on my honeymoon in Cozumel instead of deep sea fishing and couldnt be happier with my choice. After leaving a breif message with Leo he quickly followed up with me to get a better understanding of my fitness level and experience level, and was able to confirm the trip within 24hrs.
I got scheduled for a trip from 9am-2pm with Rodrigo out of Puerto Abrigo in Cozumel. I was the only person in my party, so he tried to set me up on a trip with another couple which fortunately for me no-showed. However I was very impressed that instead of leaving the port immediately Rodrigo and Leo followed up with their client to see if they were late. That is what I call customer service! Once confirming the couple couldnt make it we were swiftly on our way to the hunting site.
After a brief boat ride we came to our first spot. While I was excited to get in the water right away, Rodrigo and crew showed true professionalism by reviewing all of the details. We talked about the safety proceedures, hand signals, hunting strategy, the species we were after, the equipment, and they answered any and all questions I had. Everyone was very personable and spoke great English.
The first spot we went to was about 25-30ft of water and a good place to get started. I got a few looks at some triggerfish, and after a few missed shots Rodrigo gave me some tips to increase my success. After a few minutes he pointed out a barracuda and jack meandering by. Much to my delight I nailed the Barracuda no problem. I was super fired up! Rodrigo and crew assisted with everything from loading the guns, to getting the fish on board and I felt truely pampered.
The second spot we went to was a bit deeper maybe 40-60ft. Here we saw lots of gamefish. Within 15 minutes Rodrigo nailed a permit hiding under a coral head. I got several looks at some triggerfish, some average sized barracuda, and some really big permit. I couldnt get close enough to the triggerfish or permit for a shot and missed a few shots at the barracudas. After maybe 45 minutes I came across a BIG barracuda swimming up from deeper water lazily following a small group of baitfish. After diving down the fish stayed on course, she didn't even turn away to give me a profile shot, but considering the size of the fish I knew I wasnt going to get this close to her again so I decided to take the shot despite the poor angle. I hit the barracuda in its spine just behind the head and the fish almost died instantly! As I came to the surface I noticed the speartip had not gone through the fish so I signaled for a follow up shot to secure the fish. As I hauled the fish up I was blown away! The fish was at least 5ft and 50+ lbs! Rodrigo and crew were just as excited about the big fish as I was, and made sure we got the fish in the boat safely. They even managed to shoot a jack circling my barracuda as I was bringing it up.
My head was buzzing with adrenaline as we went to the third spot which was basically a drift dive along a ridge. Maybe 15 minutes in Rodrigo nailed a snapper hiding under a rock ledge, but we didnt see many gamefish. After mile long drift we headed back into port where they cleaned and filleted the fish giving me the option to take home any of the fish we had got that day. I opted for 1 of the fillets from my giant barracuda and a permit fillet. The single barracuda fillet fed 8 people that night for dinner....EXCELLENT!
Hands down the most exciting fishing trip I had been on in years. Dont think about it just do it. Best day of my trip hands down. Top notch locations, top notch crew, and top notch customer service. I will be back again without a doubt. My only gripe is that they dont sell t-shirts, but that gives me a reason to go back ASAP!
