This property is fantastic in every way for a resort that is not on the map as a luxurious resort except for one thing - the actual room is very basic.

PROPERTY - Landscaping wonderful. Always maintained. Beautiful palms, gardens, hibiscus, etc. Walkways to resteraunts, beach, pools lined with tropical plants and piped in music.

BEACH - Wonderful but there is a band of course shell that gets washed up just at you enter the water. On the beach it's great and once you get past the shell, it's great in the water. The sand is white and wonderful but not that soft fine sand - a little courser but still great on the bare feet. Not much to look at snorkeling off shore - a little. The most we found were where the boats are anchored to submersed concrete blocks under the water.

ROOM - I wouldn't say the beds are "hard" but they are "dense". Ours had the egg carton foam on top and we were very pleased with the beds and I slept like a baby. The rooms themselves are VERY BASIC. No fancy furniture. Bathroom tiles/grout show some wear. You can really tell the age of the property here. But there is all you need. We would not let the room keep us from staying here again. We were never in it except to shower, change clothes, sleep. It's not bad, just basic. Minimal decor. Always clean. Maid service is great. It's true you can hear your neighbors (next door and outside) but not enough that you can't overlook it. If you need some quiet at night, don't book a room near the theatre or the activity pool. The lower numbered rooms 1XXX - 4XXX are nearer the lobby/resteraunts/theatre and farthest from the beach. The higher numbered rooms 5XXX and up are near the pools/beach/daytime dining.

POOLS - Nice. The bottoms need a new paint job. Were clean and just the right size and temp. Lots of good lounge chairs. Nice to have one relaxation pool separate from the activity pool. Only poolside bar is at the activity pool.

FOOD - We loved it. Thought it was great! Lunch great. Dinner great. We booked in the Italian resteraunt one night but the buffet could have been better. The variety doesn't go on and on - only 1-2 fish choices and only 1 choice of beef, chicken, pork, etc. but all were prepared wonderfully and we loved.

DIVING - All great. Staff, equipment, boats, schedule - all great. Check with the dive shack on the beach before you book snorkeling or other excursions thru the salesmen at the desk just after you exit the lobby. These guys book trips with other vendors that may originate in town

We would definately come here again.

  • Liked — The way the property was groomed. The beach.
  • Disliked — The room itself is very basic.

We stayed at the Allegro Cozumel by Occidental right before Hurrican Dean, the hotel was getting ready to evacuate it's remaining guest and transfer them to the Xcaret hotel, but because we only had one night left they did not want us to go, the hotel manager said that we were on our own, and that the ferry will not operate, because they had to take the ferries to a safe place. I could understand that. But for the manager to tell us they would not allow us to the main land (Cancun) was insane. My husband argue with them and told them that he has been involve in many rescue mission since he worked for the City OF New York, they finally said ok but not for a very long time. We finally got to the hotel. The Allegro has a nice beach but the rooms are like a motel, big mistake on part for booking this hotel. I couldn't even use the bathroom it was so gross. Now I know never to go to this hotel ever.

We stayed at the Allegro Cozumel April 26-30--it was very nice. Rooms are small but newly painted and very clean. Walls are thin and beds are hard (as they are all over in Mex.) but after a long day on the beach it doesn’t really matter! During our stay the hotel was only 1/4 to 1/3 full at most--post spring break--no college kids, mostly couples & a few families. Food was delicious! We tried both ala carte restaurants (good service & great food--especially the fish!) as well as the breakfast and dinner buffets in the main restaurant and the poolside lunch buffet. All staff members we encountered were pleasant and hard-working. Drinks flow freely and are plenty strong, but they get warm quickly, so if you like to sip, bring insulated cups. Check in and check out were both smooth. Still some signs of hurricane damage near the beach and along the periphery but the hotel grounds are beautifully planted, colorful and well kept. My husband completed 5 dives through the on-site dive shop (Dive Palancar). They were efficient and the excursions were varied and well run. Beach is gorgeous and there is good snorkeling right off of the shore (saw some rays, eels, and tiny jellyfish and lots of small fish). Not a problem to get a palapa on the beach or poolside. Wish we could have stayed longer and can’t wait to go back!

Traveler's tip
Avoid the time share and "tourist information" people at the airport. Go straight to taxi stand and pay a flat rate for ride direct to your resort. Cost $19 for 2 people to the Allegro. When leaving, get to the airport plenty early for your flight. Took quite a while to get checked in (1 hour 15 min) and we were there about 2 1/2 hours early.

We just got back from the Allegro and we have to say that we are completely dumbfounded by all of the bad reviews. We stayed for a week in early August. I am 14 years old, I went with my brother, parents, and some friends. We had a terrific vacation and would gladly be on a plane tomorrow to go back.

Front Desk Services- My family only got one room, but our friends got 2 connecting ones. Well.....they didn’t get connecting but they did get 2 rooms right beside each other which was fine for them. My mom says the Front Desk staff were all very nice and spoke English really well.

Rooms- We stayed in a building that was halfway between the lobby and the beach, which was a pretty good location for us. The AC worked extremely well. Sometimes we had to turn it off! The beds are a little hard but we all slept fine. We were on the ground floor and couldn't hear our neighbours at all, but I’m not sure about the top rooms. People seem to complain about the noise from other rooms but, honestly, the only noise we heard was a bullfrog one night after a rainstorm and that’s not the hotel’s fault!

Grounds- The grounds are really pretty. The floor around the pool gets very hot in the peak day times so make sure to bring your sandals. My particular favorite piece of the grounds is deadwood in a tweety cage. (you'll know what I mean when you get there!)

Pools- The pools are very well kept. The swim up bar is very cool. The drinks are good. Try a pina colada or a pink panther. Those were the general favorites. The pools are really big, and the activities are very well run. Carlos runs the best water polo games.

Food- The food is fine, typical of what you would get at any all inclusive. We always found something to eat from the buffet. The breakfast buffet is the best – always an omelette section and the best French toast! Each night is a theme night so check on the tv in your room for the week and if you don’t think you’re going to like the theme book one of the restaurants instead. Make sure you get a seat in the air-conditioned part of the buffet as the middle section where the food is can get quite hot.

Beach- Best. Beach. Ever. The water is so clear. My parents even loved it! Jumping off the pier is fun too. Some of the fish would give you an icy stare though.

So there it is. It’s a nice place. You get what you pay for but much much more. If you go in the next few days, say hello to Miguel, the coolest maintenance guy ever, Carlos, and Raul. Also, say hello to Rocco, the crazy looking iguana that looks like it got in a fight. You’ll know him when you see him!

Before we travelled we had read the reviews on the Allegro and found them to be mixed. Some good and bad comments. However after staying there I am suprised that no-one had mentioned the rooms.
During the day we were hardly in our room and if we were noise then was not a big issue. The problem was at night - in fact all through the night we could hear everything (and I mean everything !!!) that other people were doing in their rooms. It was as though the walls did not exist. The rest of the holiday was great. White sand beach, good food, nice atmosphere, two pools and no problems with getting a sunbed either by the pool or on the beach. Pleasant staff especially the waiters. Best of all was the diving which was first class. Also enjoyed jumping into the hot-tub with a couple of cocktails and our new American friends while a tropical storm passed over- lovely.
Sadly would not return to this hotel unless room situation sorted out as part of my holiday is getting some sleep at night !!
