my husband and I and my brother-in-law and friend stayed at the Allegro from June 7th-June13th. We had a fabulous vacation and it was exactly what I expected after reading all the TripAdvisor reviews! We are all late-20s and pretty easy to please, so weren't expecting a 5-star resort with fancy food or exceptional service. we
were pleasantly suprised with what the Allegro had to offer. We booked our trip through Orbitz 2 weeks before we left, and got a great deal for the summer season, couldn't pass it up for the price!
Arrival at the Cozumel airport was a piece of cake...nothing like the
crazy chaos in Cancun!! flight arrived at 12:30, we were to the resort and checked in by 1:30 and had the rest of the day to enjoy! 1 of our rooms was ready, the other was ready in about 20 minutes, so worked out great. we booked our transfers to and from the airport through Orbitz...it was about $27 per person...i would definitely NOT
do this next time and buy a ticket at the airport. the people who rode in our same van from the airport stayed at the Occidental Grand (one resort further south of the Allegro) and i think they paid $8 per person. the Cozumel airport is super small and easy to get thru customs and immigration. for our first time there though, was nice to have everything arranged.
grounds are beautiful and extremely well kept. you would never know that this place got hit by a hurricane recently, it has been rebuilt amazingly well. check in was a breeze....they had all our email requests (that I had sent down ahead of time) exactly how we wanted it (2 rooms, side by side, top floor, 1 with king bed, 1 with 2 double beds, etc) except for the location. We were in building 14 which was essentially the closest one to the lobby and the FURTHEST away from the beach and pools, but not a huge deal...we spent very minimal time in our rooms anyways and couldn't complain about the little extra exercise to burn off all the cervezas. :) if we went back, i would try and get a little closer to the pools.
rooms were average...nothing fancy, but no huge complaints. A/C worked great thanfully, as it was scorching hot out. rooms were small, but for the 2 of us, we made do. would have been nice if they would have had some sort of dresser to unload all our stuff, i basically left mine in the suitcase all week. everything you take there that is dry will end up being damp when you leave, the humidity
outside and in the room does not keep your clothes dry. keep that in mind. towels were still sopping wet the next morning, they never dried. rooms had ironing boards and iron, hair dryer, coffee pot, etc. maid always restocked our bottled water and we never ran out. left her a small tip everyday and we always came back to fresh sheets, clean towels, and cute little towel animals on our bed. beds
were extremely hard, which i knew going into it....but suprisingly i slept extremely well! being out in the sun and drinking all day can help you sleep like a baby at night, you are just exhausted. so the one thing i was expecting to complain about actually turned out to be okay. :)
the beach was my absolute favorite part of the resort!! beautiful sand, beautiful water, calm waves....thatched palapas lining the beach, all kinds of beach chairs...it was paradise! never had a problem finding a chair on the beach. we spent alot of time over by the dive shop, met some of the staff that worked there and they would
bend over backwards to make sure you were having a great time. we used the hobie boats, went windsurfing and kayaking, and enjoyed floating in the ocean. snorkeled off the beach a few times, also took our snorkeling gear out on the hobie boat and snorkeled underneath while someone sailed it. highly recommended!! go out about 50-75 yards from shore, the water is crystal clear and we saw all kinds of fish. hubby saw a shark about 30 feet down, scary!
we spent the majority of our day time in the pool and at the swim-up bar. pool was very clean and water was super refreshing. enjoyed hearing the music poolside, although i can understand why some might complain about it being too loud. if it's too loud and you want a quieter area, go to the other pool! we met all kinds of great people.
service at the bar was average....seemed like it took forever to get a drink. i understand that they are super busy and making all sorts of mixed drinks, but when we ordered 4 beers or 4 strawberry daquaris
(which they make by the gallon full) we shouldn't have to wait over 5
minutes to get a drink. and this wasn't a one-time deal....we felt we
waited all the time. got to the point where we'd go to the self-service Corona station (which is the best idea, ever!), not a huge deal. drinks were okay...it was so hot while we were there that anything that was blended was basically juice before you could even get it 1/2 gone. try the cabana or mexican mudslide...some of our favorites. :)
we ate lunch at the poolside buffet everyday...food was average, not bad, but nothing spectacular. we were always able to find something to eat and didn't go hungry, but would have enjoyed a little more variety and especially some fresh fruit. good breaded fish. burgers were okay...nothing like midwest burgers, but that's mexico for ya. we wish the pizza place would have been open for lunch...we would have eaten there everday probably. the pizza was pretty good....
except it took forever for that too. we went there a couple nights for pizza and waited probably 15-20 minutes just to get our pepperoni
pizza. oh well...we were on vacation....it just gets a little frustrating. we ate at the mexican restaurant one night, very good, and at the italian restaurant another night, this was good too. we enjoyed getting dressed up for dinner and going to sit down and order off a menu for a nice change of pace.
we rented a jeep from Executive across the street on the Sunday we were there - this is an absolute must for anyone visiting Cozumel!! my parents recommended us doing this, and were we ever glad! we spent
about $80 (with insurance), split 4 ways, so was a cheap day. i know you can get a car rental for a lot cheaper in town, but for the convenience of being able to walk across the street and knowing it's a reputable company made it worth it. we drove south on the main road and around to the east side of the island - stopped at every bar
and beach along the way, it is absolutely breathtaking over there! huge waves crashing over the iron-clad rocks, beautiful scenery, great times! we ate lunch at Coconuts (a restaurant/bar on top of a cliff overlooking the ocean), everyone must go here! we were touring the island on a sunday, so the traffic was minimul, and there were times were we were basically the only people at the beaches and bars.
we went into San Miguel that night and went around and did all the touristy stuff there...went out to eat at La Mission, very very very good food! drove out to Isla de Passion on the northernmost point of the island, watched the sunset...it was beatiful! all kinds of locals out there fishing. bring bug spray, i ended up with probably 25 mosquito bites, no joke. well worth it though, we had such a great
time. stopped at the marinas and the cenotes where locals were swimming and diving off the rocks. but definitely, if you are considering a trip to Cozumel, rent a jeep, it was the highlight of our trip. Went to Sr. Frogs for awhile too - had a great time! Our last day there, we went up to Mr. Sancho's (just north of the Allegro, before the Reef Club) and did some souvinier shopping and snorkeled on the way back, neat place to visit. Saw stingrays and baraccudas off the Allegro pier, they would eat all the leftover fish parts from the big deep sea fishing boats.
i know this is getting super long, but there's just so much to share about our vacation! i was not ready to leave, we had such a great time. if you are not picky about your rooms and don't need extravagant food, then the Allegro is the place for you. The locals told us that the Allegro has the best beach on the island, i believe it. Take advantage of all the free stuff they offer - beach volleyball, snorkeling, windsurfing, etc. nightly entertainment was okay...your typical cheesy shows, we went to a couple but were so worn out from the day. spent alot of nights in the hot tub meeting people, the hot tub suprisingly felt great after a long day. :)
check out was a breeze too - since we had arranged our airport transfers, we just had to hail a taxi (from across the street) and he
took all 4 of us and our luggage to the airport, then we handed over our transfer voucher...it was super easy. then we just had to sit at the airport and pout that our vacation was over. i guess it helped that it was pouring rain outside, and it was the first time it had actually rained for more than 5 minutes during our entire vacation. made it a little easier to get on the airplane. :)
overall, the staff was great, we never had any problems with them. everyone was so friendly. we had been to an adults-only resort before
and actually didn't notice too many kids around at the Allegro. I know they had a kiddie area and supervised day care, but never seemed
to bother us except for the couple splashing kids in the pool. overall, we had a fantastic time....would I go back?? for sure. i would like to try other resorts as well to compare them to the allegro, but i would definitely recommend this resort to anyone who is just wanting to have a nice relaxing time with a beautiful beach and nice resort grounds. anyone who is uppity about food selection and premium alcohol selection and upscale rooms, this is not the resort for you. some places rate it 3 stars, some 3 1/2, some 4....i would put it at a 3 1/2 star, room for improvement, but adequate for the price we paid and extremely enjoyable for a group of 4 late-20's who like to have a good time and enjoy the beautiful ocean. :)
