We got there on the the 23rd fo Jun (direct flight from Toronto). We are a family of 4 with 2 kids (7 and 12). The resort is impeccable and grounds are in pristine condition. The best part is definitely the beach, white sand and crystal clear water. We stayed 2 weeks and loved each day we spent there. We came face to face more than once with Baraccudas who seemed to have elected to live below the pier. Seveal Sting rays can be seen swimming within meters of the shore.
The staff is friendly and overall we did not have serious concerns, however we do want to highlight a couple of points which I hope the management team will address in the future.
1- Food was in my view below average at the buffet. For lunch, you either have access to the buffet (which typically has no more than 5 items on the menu + a salad or 2 and dessert made of fatty stuff - NO FRUITS - The other option is the grill where you could get a burger and access to a few fried things. DInner was typically better as they had theme nights and some added level of attention was obviously being provided.
Air Canada Vacation rates this resort as a 4 star facility, but in my view a 3 star rating would be more in line with what you get.
2- Entertainement was very average and somehow was less elaborate than what we experienced in previous stays at other resorts.
Other things to note:
Took a trip downtown, had a good time overall, did not buy anything except for a few souvenirs - Beware of the so called duty free shops where prices are actually higher than most mall prices.
Took the kids to the Chakanaab parc. Kids loved the dolphin activities however I feel that 139$ (US) + access fee (16$) is extremely expensive for spending 30 minutes in a group setting with a dolphin. It is not Forida!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Furthermore, all shops close at 5 PM, you can't even buy water after 5 even though it is 90 degrees. The management needs to review the way they manage the place. Oh yes, I almost forgot, you are not allowed to take pictures of your kids playing with the dolphins , but they will take pictures for you and sell them to you for 15$ a piece or a short DVD where your person of interest shows up for no more than 30 seconds for 30$.
Our Snorkling trip was absolutely fabulous, we booked via our Air Canada Agent (Francisco) and the 4 of us were extremely pleased with the outcome. During the trip, some idiot dropped a bottle of beer which shattered and a piece of glace lodged itsef into my wife foot. I would like to thank Francisco for taking care of the medical cost and getting the doctor on site to provide basic care as soon as we returned to the resort. During the snorling trip you get to see a variety of fish (colorful) but also stingrays, Baraccudas, See turtles, etc.
Overall, weather was great and we had a great time.
