This was our 4th time to Cozumel in the last 10 years, first time at the Allegro. We do try to go other places, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, etc, but always seem to want to come back to Cozumel the most! It is a great island, MUCH safer and friendlier than any other country/island in the region, period. If you want to party and get crazy, go to Cancun or Playa. This is a place to relax, dive, etc. Never seems to be crawling with puking, partying college kids like Cancun/Playa! They did a great job cleaning up the island following the storm (Wilma) which was the worst in modern history (for Cozumel). Whenever in CZM, we get transportation for the whole week (Scooter or car). We usually go with the scooter because parking in town is easier, and you can usually get a scooter for the whole week for about $100. We go to town often, as well as spend a lot of time on the beautiful other side of the island. We know every road and attraction on the island very well by now... Save $100s and $100s in taxi fares! The hotel...
This was our third all-inclusive in Cozumel. The best yet. No, it is NOT Sandals, but for 1/4 the price it is still a steal! We easily found mid and top-shelf liquors in the bars, also Corona always on tap (self-serv or whatever you want), as well as Modelo Dark and more. Even had Grand Mariner for nightcaps! Tropical drinks come out of the blender every time, NOT a tap! Bacardi, Cuervo, etc. goes in there, NOT the cheap stuff! Sure, the rooms are somewhat small, but completely adequate. If you want to be in a big building and have to take an elevator, walk long hallways, and hike to get to your room, this is not your place. Nice 8-unit buildings with grass roofs. Very nice atmosphere. We recommend the top floor rooms as you have the cool roof and more privacy. Nice little balcony with hammock and chairs. The room had a small fridge, coffee maker, toaster, microwave, safe, etc. Never needed those things though. Excellent air conditioning! No loud, rattly window units! All (refrigerant) piped in like with a grocery store's central compressor unit. Quiet and worked better than at any resort we have stayed. Cold bottle of champagne waiting for you when you get to your room. Nice little touches by the maids (blanket animals, flowers, etc), little surprises once in a while just appear in your room while out, meat and cheese plate with wine, etc. Always plenty of towels, twice a day. Very, very clean.
The food was fine. Not a huge selection, but very adequate. Many good traditional dishes and something to please everyone. Their beef and chicken were excellent. The fish was fantastic as well. Never had even a hint of food-borne illness! If anything, it might plug you up! (sorry to sound crude, but its the truth) Don't have to worry about the food AT ALL.
The service and staff were great. Always polite and not pressuring you for tips. Tip as you see fit. $1 a day for the maid, $1 every day for your favorite bartender, etc. They do deserve it, they work very hard for an average wage of $5 a day!
The property is in good repair, especially considering the damage from the hurricane. A lot of the trees and plants are a bit immature as most were replaced. A few more years and the place will be really nice! (trees) The beach is great, the best on the island (where there are hotels). You can walk miles in either direction. Absolutely beautiful! Turquoise water, white sand! Snorkeling at the hotel is great as well. Some nice little reefs just out a 100 yards off the beach. Dive shop is top-notch and they have a nice fleet of GOOD boats. I did a few dives as usual and had a blast. Even saw some 6+ foot sharks! Another fun aspect of the property is the iguanas. There are a lot of them. They come out as soon as there is good sun. They are everywhere. Huge ones! Some as big as 3 feet long and 20 pounds! Grey, green, and even orange ones. Very cool! The one that lives under our step learned to watch for us every day to bring her cucumbers from the salad bar. She would just about eat out of our hands. Put it on the step and she would come up to you and snatch it!
I could go on and on but don't want to make this an hour-long read. If you don't pay full retail (as most people don't anyway) this is the best value on the island. Worth every penny, and then some! I hate to say it, as we would love to keep this place a secret! We would go back in a heartbeat! (as long as the price was the same) P.S. check out the Occidental Grand next door....
