Where do I begin?? I first noticed the Allegro in an Air Canada Vacations book and it looked really nice. We came here onto to Trip Advisor and the reviews were all over the place - some great, some not so great..... We decided to make up our own mind and we booked our trip.
We left Saturday August 19 travelling direct to Cozumel on Air Canada. The captain advised us it was 39 degrees when we arrived. We were the only plane at the Cozumel airport when we landed :) We were off the plane, through customs, had our bags, got the "green" light and were on the mini-van within 20 minutes. Another 20 minutes we were at the Allegro. 40 minutes from plane to resort - you gotta love that.
We had asked for adjoining rooms as we were bringing our 12 yr old son and 13 yr old daughter and adjoining rooms we got. We were room 1722 (upstairs with the thatched roof!!). Our room was perfect - the air conditioning was great and having a ceiling fan was perfect for sleeping at night when you wanted the air off.
We awoke the next morning and had breakfast - it was great - made to order omlettes, french toast, pancakes, sausage, bacon, fresh fruit etc. etc. Down to the beach we went. It was AWESOME. For t hose who are into snorkelling we took our own gear and snorkelled right off the beach. To the right of the Allegro is a pier (just off the property line). We snorkelled here every day and saw TONNES of FISH including the biggest barracuda we'd ever seen. Lots of box fishes, skates etc. It was wonderful. You can snorkel right underneath the pier and that were all the fish are. To the left of the Allegro is t heir very own pier (where the dive boats are). If you wait until after 5pm the snorkelling at this pier is very good too. You just need to wait until after all the dive boats have been taken back into the ocean past the buoy line. Apart from that we saw big schools of fish right between the 2 piers.
Meals - Breakfast like I said was awesome - lunch at the beach grill was also great. My son loved the hamburgers, my daughter loved the fresh guacamole and chips and my husband ate fish every day at lunch. They had fries, hot dogs, fish, pork, chicken, rice, etc. We had dinner at Italian and it was great - chicken ceasar salad for an appetizer, spaghetti for the adults and the kids had homemade pizza. Dinner at Mexican was just as good - we had fajitas while my husband had grouper. The dinner buffet was perfectly fine. Plenty to choose from. They have a theme each night ie: oriental, mexican, italian, caribbean, BBQ, etc.
Shows - Kudos to the staff at the Allegro - they work each day from 8am - 11pm. They look after the kids club, organize games ie: water polo and beach volleyball and make a great effort to meet everyone. They are also in every show. They dance there hearts out each night and do a fabulous job. Our favorite show was Riverdance and the Michael Jackson Thriller number, Bohemian Rapsody and the Rocky Horror Picture Show tribute. Excellent work Allegro staff.
The Resort - Beautifully maintained - they are constantly working - raking the beach, mowing the lawn, manicuring the palm trees etc. etc.
The Staff - What can I say....my daughter lost an orange coral necklace down the drain in her bathroom sink. We could see it at the bottom of the drain. I went down to the lobby area and spoke with the guy behind the desk. He had a maintenance man in our room within 5 minutes. This man then took apart the sink and drain and had my daughter's coral necklace back in her hands within 10 minutes. Unbelievable staff at this resort.
Our Maid - we had Prisila and each day we'd rush back to see our towel art on the bed - we had swans, elephants, iguanas, hearts and loads of fresh hibiscus flowers too.
We had the biggest iguana living underneath our building (17 block) - the kids named his Iggy and he'd eat fresh mango from the lady right below us. Too cool...
We did the 3 reef snorkelling trip with the Manta guys on the Fury Catameran - it was fun - we saw 2 nurse sharks, sea turtles and lots of gorgeous fish - the Palancar reef was awesome.
We rented a jeep from Executive (right across the street from the resort) and toured the island - we stopped at Playa Sur for photos and Coconuts for a drink and more photographs.
If you are up for a beach walk walk the beach to the right of the Allegro. It will take you past the pier and you will see in the distance a big Palapa looking hut (its 2 storey). This is Mr. Sanchos beach club. You pass it on the drive into the Allegro from the Airport. This is free - you just pay if you want a drink or food. The kids can swim and snorkel on their beach and best of all there are about 12-15 Vendors selling all kinds of t-shirts, jewellry etc. We got a gorgeous black coral seahorse necklace for my daughter for $13.00 american. It is so unique. They also have a lady who will braid your hair if you are looking for that - a lot cheaper than at the resort.
I can not pick a real fault with this resort at all - we came for a family vacation and loved every minute. We loved playing beach volleyball with the resort staff every day. This resort caters to families - if you are looking to be wined and dined this is not for you. This is great for teens and kids - really safe too. My kids had the run of the resort and we never had any worries.
I'd just love to thank the following people:
Natalie from Montana and Gabby - you danced your heart out every night in those shows and did a fabulous job (although you do need to work on your volleyball game Nat!!) Poncho - you went out of your way to make my daughter feel special and it was much appreciated. We did look for you to say goodbye on Saturday but we couldn't find you - We wish you all the best - you are a fantastic dancer and beach volleyball player - I hope our paths will cross again.
Please do not be influenced by negative reviews - try it out yourself - you'll be glad you did.
PS - Glad to have met you UKTony - :)
