My husband and I were there June 5-June 11, 2005. This is our second time at the Allegro, the first in June 2000. We did the All-Inclusive package. Check-in was fast with no problems. The hotel room was very nice and updated. Air conditioning from the wall instead of a separate unit. Water was always hot.
The beach was very nice. Just 6 feet or so into the water and it really dropped off. Didn't have to go out far to be in shoulder height (I'm 5'8") water. Visibility wasn't all that great until you got out about half-way between the beach and buoys. Snorkeling wasn't as great as it used to be. The first time out I saw a big starfish. Second time I saw 2 big barracuda and huge schools of gray fish (sorry, dont know what kind they are). We dove with Dive Palancar, which is right on the resort. I definately recommend them. Gustavo and Pablo helped us complete our open water referral and they were very good. Pablo went out of his way to show us turtles, king lobster, sharks, eel, huge grouper, etc. Dive Palancar is probably the best thing about the resort because it is so convenient. Although I would recommend bringing your own wetsuit because the dive shop's really really reeked.
The hotel is a family resort so there were lots of kids in the hot tub and unfortunately by the swim-up bar even though there is a big, separate pool for them. If you want a romantic, couples only vacation, this is not the place for you.
The food was really bad....to put it simply. And I talked to another couple that agreed whole-heartedly. I am NOT a picky eater at all and there were times I found myself walking around the buffet not finding anything good to eat. Very disappointing. And it seemed like all the food was very salty tasting. Spaghetti and other noodles are available at every lunch buffet and unfortunately I ended up eating that a couple times...which didn't make the Italian restaurant (Caruso's) very appealing. Caruso's had a nice, quiet atmosphere, but the food was just ok. Don't order the Tiramisu expecting to get real Tiramisu...it's more like chocolate cake with a marshmellow filling with no coffee taste. My husband did like the chocolate cake though. Le Troje, the Mexican restaurant, was actually pretty good. Jorge makes a "special" coffee, which I recommend. It is fun to watch him make it and pretty tasty! The only thing about this restaurtant, though, is that afterwards my husband and I both had gut pains and GI problems (sorry, too much info) for the entire next day.
There is a local bus that charges $2 or $4, I cant remember which. You just have to stand outside the hotel alongside the road and wave them down. I believe it comes every 30-40 minutes - check with the businesses across the road and they'll let you know when it's coming next. A cab ride into town is $15 plus tip one-way. We didn't take the bus but one couple we talked to did and they said there were no problems at all and it was cheap.
If you go downtown Cozumel I recommend eating at Aquario. Ask the hotel front desk for a coupon for 2 free drinks...make sure you present the coupon before ordering. The restaurant has great atmosphere with live music (we were there Thurs. evening) and semi-open patio seating right on the ocean. Very nice! The lobster bisque and scallops were excellent...too bad they dont serve the scallops as a main dish! Aquario has a little "pool" where you can pick out your own lobster and the workers will net it for you. Plus, right next door is the Atlantid, which has dolphin swimming so you can hear and see the dolphins as you eat. I recommend!!
Summary: Family resort, bad food, very convenient and good dive shop
Will we go for a third time? No, unless we hear that the food has improved or they've hired a new chef! (not finding anything good to eat doesn't make it worth the AI)
