My husband and I were there June 5-June 11, 2005. This is our second time at the Allegro, the first in June 2000. We did the All-Inclusive package. Check-in was fast with no problems. The hotel room was very nice and updated. Air conditioning from the wall instead of a separate unit. Water was always hot.
The beach was very nice. Just 6 feet or so into the water and it really dropped off. Didn't have to go out far to be in shoulder height (I'm 5'8") water. Visibility wasn't all that great until you got out about half-way between the beach and buoys. Snorkeling wasn't as great as it used to be. The first time out I saw a big starfish. Second time I saw 2 big barracuda and huge schools of gray fish (sorry, dont know what kind they are). We dove with Dive Palancar, which is right on the resort. I definately recommend them. Gustavo and Pablo helped us complete our open water referral and they were very good. Pablo went out of his way to show us turtles, king lobster, sharks, eel, huge grouper, etc. Dive Palancar is probably the best thing about the resort because it is so convenient. Although I would recommend bringing your own wetsuit because the dive shop's really really reeked.
The hotel is a family resort so there were lots of kids in the hot tub and unfortunately by the swim-up bar even though there is a big, separate pool for them. If you want a romantic, couples only vacation, this is not the place for you.
The food was really bad....to put it simply. And I talked to another couple that agreed whole-heartedly. I am NOT a picky eater at all and there were times I found myself walking around the buffet not finding anything good to eat. Very disappointing. And it seemed like all the food was very salty tasting. Spaghetti and other noodles are available at every lunch buffet and unfortunately I ended up eating that a couple times...which didn't make the Italian restaurant (Caruso's) very appealing. Caruso's had a nice, quiet atmosphere, but the food was just ok. Don't order the Tiramisu expecting to get real Tiramisu...it's more like chocolate cake with a marshmellow filling with no coffee taste. My husband did like the chocolate cake though. Le Troje, the Mexican restaurant, was actually pretty good. Jorge makes a "special" coffee, which I recommend. It is fun to watch him make it and pretty tasty! The only thing about this restaurtant, though, is that afterwards my husband and I both had gut pains and GI problems (sorry, too much info) for the entire next day.
There is a local bus that charges $2 or $4, I cant remember which. You just have to stand outside the hotel alongside the road and wave them down. I believe it comes every 30-40 minutes - check with the businesses across the road and they'll let you know when it's coming next. A cab ride into town is $15 plus tip one-way. We didn't take the bus but one couple we talked to did and they said there were no problems at all and it was cheap.
If you go downtown Cozumel I recommend eating at Aquario. Ask the hotel front desk for a coupon for 2 free drinks...make sure you present the coupon before ordering. The restaurant has great atmosphere with live music (we were there Thurs. evening) and semi-open patio seating right on the ocean. Very nice! The lobster bisque and scallops were excellent...too bad they dont serve the scallops as a main dish! Aquario has a little "pool" where you can pick out your own lobster and the workers will net it for you. Plus, right next door is the Atlantid, which has dolphin swimming so you can hear and see the dolphins as you eat. I recommend!!
Summary: Family resort, bad food, very convenient and good dive shop
Will we go for a third time? No, unless we hear that the food has improved or they've hired a new chef! (not finding anything good to eat doesn't make it worth the AI)

Our family was on the second plane to Cozumel from England and having read the reviews before we went were were a little dubious - however we had a great time. We were in a refurbished room as it was pleasant and clean with nothing broken. The iron and ironing board, hair dryer and coffee machine came in very handy. The bed linen/towels are changed daily and we had a towel sculpture nearly every day. Breakfast is great (ate too much really) and I would agree that sometimes the food was a little bland, but if everything was spicy what would the kids eat? The Mexican and Italian restaurants were excellent and the waiting staff very attentive. The drinks could be a bit stronger - but it means you can drink them all day instead of soft drinks. We were often asked by the bar staff collecting glasses if they could get us another drink, whether sitting on the beach or by the pool. The 3 reef snorkel trip was very good, the horse riding fun, the trip to Coba very interesting including a cool off swim in a sink hole although we were a bit unsure about the visit to the 'genuine' Mayan village. The kids swam with dolphins while we shot the video and took pictures - worth it as they want to charge you 50 dollars for a video. By the way the 'charge' for the kayaks etc is a goverment imposed reef tax paid daily if you go out to the reefs or take part in water sports it isn't the hotel charging.
We intend going back in a few years to become certified divers having had a trial dive this time as there is so much more to see out there.

We stayed at the Allegro June 1st through the 8th. We had a great time and plan to go back. We were in building 36 which is one of the renovated rooms. The 3000 and 5000 rooms are all renovated rooms. When checking in I just asked if it were possible to get in either of those buildings and they gave it to us. We didn't have to tip them extra to get it. It was a simple Mexican style room which was very clean and comfortable. Our building had central air which was cold and very nice during the hot humid season. We were also provided with an egg shell foam pad which softened the hard bed up some. We never lacked any thing in the room. We were given plenty of water bottles, coffee packets, and clean towels. We left a small tip for the lady who cleaned our room everyday. You share a common building with three other rooms and sometimes you can hear the other people in their rooms. The food was great. We enjoyed the buffet as much as the two restaurants that you need to make reservations for. We even got to eat twice at the Italian restaurant even though the policy is once at each place per vacation. I just told them that I loved it there and wanted to go there on our last night at the resort. They made the exception. The diving was exceptional and the dive masters were all great. They ran a very professional operation. My husband went on 9 dives and every one was in a different area. I went twice on the three reaf snorkle trip. It's fun and the areas you snorkel are are great. They provide snacks and drinks. The beach is wonderful. It is the nicest in the area. The only thing that I can complain about is the drinks at the pool bar. It is hit and miss. Ask for the upgraded liquer. The beer is cold, and if you bring your own cooler cup it stays that way. The quality of the drinks go down when they get really busy in the afternoons. The smoothie bar is fantastic. Order any one of them and take it over to the bar and have them add some bacardi and your all set. Usually you can get the best drinks at the little bar they set up by the beach. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Restrooms could use an uplife. Go and enjoy yourself. If you want perfection you probably won't be happy. I miss my hammock.

We just got back from Cozumel, we stayed from May 31st through June 7th, 2005. The Allegro had it's positives and negatives.

THE GOOD: The nightly entertainment was campy and corny, but it was fun and the entertainment staff are hysterical to watch. We especially enjoyed Raoul. They do a different show each night, mostly they're performing dance numbers with really bad lip-synching but that's what makes it so fun to watch. And a few of them can really dance.

The beach was beautiful and relaxing. We sometimes had to sit by the pool to find shade because we didn't get to the beach early enough to snag a palapa, but it's not a long walk from the pools to the beach so that was okay. The sand fleas only got us on our last night there...what made them only bite that night, I have no idea.

The grounds are very well maintained and beautiful. They're inhabited by several large iguanas and some varying sized toads. We also saw some interesting birds while we were there.

The food staff was very friendly and attentive for the most part. We had our drink orders taken right on the beach on a few occasions.

We were able to make reservations at both Caruso's (Italian) and La Troje (Mexican). You just have to make your reservations two days in advance and you shouldn't have a problem. The food at Caruso's was very good...I'd give it 3.5 to 4 stars out of 5. I didn't like the food at La Troje as much, but it was nice to eat somewhere else besides the buffet.

THE BAD: AVOID THE PEOPLE IN WHITE OCCIDENTAL SHIRTS STANDING RIGHT INSIDE THE RESORT OUTSIDE THE LOBBY!!! These people will use whatever tactics necessary to get you to listen to their timeshare salespitch. They tell you it's not a timeshare...it's a timeshare. We figured out fairly early on that they try to get you roped in by finding out what day trips you're interested in and then offering you discounts on them. So when one of them approached us on day three, we told them we were staying at the resort for the day. He said, "Oh good, that's great, go ahead upstairs, we have a gift package for you." He said there was free bottles of Tequila, t-shirts, and Mexican Blankets there waiting for us. We obviously had "sucker" labeled on our foreheads because we went upstairs and spent the next two hours getting tag-team-pressured to buy into their time share. We finally walked out without any gift basket, although they did end up giving us two extra-large t-shirts and two small tiny blankets three days later.

The buffet food is mediocre. Every once in a while we'd come across an item that we thought was halfway decent, so we'd load up our plates with it. The warm desserts that they offered were usually pretty good. The breakfast is probably the most tasty meal of the day...especially if you like carbs. Lots of bread items...toast, rolls, sweet rolls (both hot and cold), french toast, pancakes, empanadas, cereal. They also had an omellette station that was pretty good. They do some wierd stuff at dinner. Almost everynight, regardless of the theme (chinese, italian, spanish, mexican, etc.), they had a pasta station where you could add your own items to the sauce and pasta of your choice. One of the items always offered looked scarily close to chopped up hot dogs. Hot dog pasta....it's just strange.

The only other negative was that after the nightly show (usually over by 9:45pm) there's really nothing to do. The grounds are nice to walk around on at night...but there's not that much of them to meander around.

We never smelled any sewage smell...although our room smelled a little mildewy the first couple nights we were there. We also had a problem one night when we got back to our room...the floor was covered with lots of dead tiny little black bugs. We had to call twice to have them cleaned up and we never had the problem again.

That's about it. If you stay there, say hi to the iguana who hangs out in front of the 3400 rooms. His name is Timmy.

Our family had a wonderful stay at the Allegro from June 2 through the 5th, 2005. The Resort is older but extremely clean, the staff is wonderful, very helpful. The rooms need updating. We were in building 12; the room was very clean but old, what some would call a Motel 6 in Texas. The grounds were very nice, well manicured. The food was fine and plentiful. We enjoyed all of the restaurants and all of the meals that we had during our stay. One thing that we noticed is that the staff ensures that the children and parents, each, have a good time. The staff knew the names of the children, the staff included the children in the shows, it was great to see the time and energy that these guys put into making sure families enjoyed themselves. The beach was beautiful. Very clean, angel fish were everywhere. Our son thoroughly enjoyed himself (sorry we took all the cucumbers from the salad bar to feed the fish) Worry Free Vacations was great. Pierre was our representative. He did a great job assisting us with tours and answering all of our questions. Speaking of tours, take the Mayan Paradise Tour, snorkeling and snuba with Gary Hillson, excellent...you won't regret it. Over all our vacation at the Allegro was great, we would stay there again and have intentions to next year, we're even taking a few friends when we go back. One thing, Champion Airlines, I don't suggest using this Airline to fly from Dallas Fort Worth to Cozumel. Our flight was to leave DFW at 9:30AM. Everyone arrived as requested, 7AM only to find out that the crew was "tired" had gone to a hotel to get some rest and hopefully would be back at 1:30....GREAT, our first day of what was to be R&R ended up being spent at DFW and being 6 hours late to our resort in Cozumel. The flight crew had a bad attitude when they did arrive; especially the oversized one, she obviously didn't get enough rest!
Champion did depart Cozumel on time, imagine that....but it didn't make up for our family missing six hours of sand, sun and fun at the resort on our first day, first visit to the Island. Visit the Allergo, you'll like it.
