My husband and I travel to Mexico and/or the Carribean at least once a year and we have stayed at the Allegro 6 times in the past 12 years. 5 of those trips we took our kids (who are now adults) and the reason we keep going back is because ALL of us love it and want to return - in fact we are going again this year in May. I will admit that the rooms are modest, but they are clean and comfortable and the only time we spend in them is to sleep and bathe so who cares. Plus, we always leave a dollar or two for the housekeeping staff and they decorate our room with fresh flowers - it's a very nice touch. The beach is the second best we've ever seen (second only to the Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort) and the sunsets are incredible. The dive shop is the best we've ever been to - as well as the scuba diving itself. They have a good variety of food and the ala carte restaurants are delicious and fun. The entertainment is good and the disco is fun. The staff are very friendly and attentive. The massages are out of this world! Others have complained about mosquitos but we've never had a problem with them at the resort - only at the ruins. I can't say enough good things about this resort.
On the down side it is about a 20 - 25 minute drive to town and not cheap via taxi. We typically choose one day to rent a car or jeep to tour the island and shop. You can usually get a better price on car rentals by walking across the street from the resort. It's worth the money to rent a vehicle and drive to the eastern (windward) side of the island - very beautiful. Carlos & Charlies is a very fun "party" place to visit if you're into that sort of thing.
A few tips....If you don't like your room or its location don't be shy about telling the front desk - they will gladly move you if space is available. Regarding the drinks, bring your own insulated cup with a lid and have them put your drink in that so you don't have to deal with the little plastic cups that get warm and if the wind is blowing they get sand in them. Also, in the event you get one of the second floor rooms with the thatched roof (which we find to be very charming), bring a scented candle to get rid of any musty smell that may exist if it rains. Between the hot sun, diving, and drinking we got pretty dehydrated so we learned how to request extra water in spanish and left a note each day for housekeeping with a small tip and had LOTS of bottled water. Taking the ferry to Playa del Carmen is a fun day trip if you want to venture out. Finally, we always bring our own blow up rafts so we can take them out to the ocean and float (sleep) on them - it's very relaxing.
Overall, for the price you can't come close to anything else this good. Quite frankly, this is the least expensive resort we've ever stayed at and yet, one of the best. That's why we keep coming back.
