I travelled in a group of 6 and we were all a little aprehensive about going but all our past holidays have been fantastic so we thought a holiday is what you make it.
After a little under 2 hours delay from Gatwick we arrived at Cozumel Airport, Its fairly small, immigration fairly slow and the baggage even more so and then you have to join the queue to have your baggage x-rayed before you can get out the airport!
Transfers are arranged in mini vans of about 8 people as they do not have coaches on the island and took about 25/30 minutes to the hotel.
Upon arrival we were greeted by the entertainment team who tell you the room number you will be in, mark it on your baggage and then advise you to check in at reception. Drinks were being passed around by waiters which was a nice touch.
Do ask for your safety deposit key at check in its free.
Rooms
The hotel comprises of blocks scattered throughout the grounds, we were inb standrad rooms which although fairly basic did have a t.v, fridge, iron and ironing board. The beds are on concrete bases but I found them to be very firm and very comfortable and had no trouble sleeping. The bathroom was small but fine and the shower excellent never had any problems with lack of hot water.
Maid service was very good always clean sheets and towels changed every day. We tipped the maid a couple of dollars every other day.
Grounds
The kids pool although not used by our party looked very good and always had plenty of children in it, a life guard was on duty there too. The relaxation pool was fairly quiet with plenty of sun beds around although little shade and the activities pool was louder with music playing and water sports games going on at various times throughout the day.
There was a jucuzzi before the beach and this was lovely just like a hot bath (nice to sit in when the passing rain hit!)
Food & Bars
The main buffet restaurant had ample choice and various themed nights we never found any issues eating and we had 2 vegatarians and a fussy eater in our party. The restaurant is in 2 parts air conditioned and not. You are shown to your seats which is a nice touch saves looking for a table yourselves.
The lunch buffet restaurant is down between the 2 pools again a good selection with 2 sides one a choice of meats, veg , salads etc and the other fast food types, burgers, fries, fajitas etc
This restaurant could get busy and some times finding a seat involved a wait if this was the case we took the food back to our balconies to eat.
There are 2 a la carte restaurants Oriental and Mexican. We only used the Oriental which was pretty good more thai, japanese style that the chinese you would get at home and the wine here was the best in all the bars.
There was a beach bar offering allsorts cocktails etc open from 10.00 till 6.00, the terrace bar up near reception from 7.00 till 0.00 this was our favourite although again getting a seat could sometimes be a problem if you were not early enough.
Th aquanox bar open 7.00 - 7.00 was very trendy looking with flat screen t.v's etc and had kareoke nights I felt this was a little out of character with the rest of the hotel, but again very popular.
The cocktails were good try a miami vice, white russian or mango tango all very nice!!
Entertainment
This consisted of the resident E3 team who were very good and local acts which alternated every other night.
The E3 team worked hard and the singers and dancers excellent the shows maybe a little butlins style but almost everybody enjoyed them and they were far superior to others I have seen in the caribbean, the local acts were a bit hit and miss.
They did kids village time at 8.00 for an hour and various quizzes game show style entertainment before the main show started around 10.15
Beach
Fantastic, white gritty sand leading to clear blue waters very warm. Plenty of sunloungers again little shade but as much as I hate to say it get up early and reserve a bed and your be just fine.
Lots of fish to see and you can get snorkling gear for a small deposit.
In summary, We had a really good holiday at the White Sands our only major gripe was the mosquitos which were out in avengance so do take plenty of mossie spray with you as the hotel shop kept running out as fast as it was comming in there is also risk of the sand flies biting. The hotel did not seem to spray often on the nights that they did it did the trick but this was on only 2 occasions in our 14 nights.
If you have booked to go enjoy it, its a lovely clean complex and excellent for families The First choice staff and E3 team were really friendly and always stopped for a chat. Hire a jeep for the day we did from oppisite the hotel as cheaper this cost $75 including insurance and we drove around the island only 1 main road so very simple and petrol very cheap too!
A taxi into San Miguel was $17 one way and $30 for 6/8 people so we did not go into town often.
Check out was smooth and the airport was quite well equipped for a small one, Duty Free shops very cheap and for any smokers they let you go back out for a ciggerette after you have passed through xray just have your boarding pass and passport as you have to go through it all again.
