Just got back from a week at the Allegro in Cozumel. We were there April 15-21st. Had a great time. The reviews scared me a bit however we stuck with our orignal reservation and gave the Allegro a try.
The good things about the hotel are:
1) Great Staff-very friendly.
Activies group always had something going on to do. Their nightly shows were fun! I have not idea how they keep up but they do a wonderful job! My kids loved them. My six year old cried all they way to the airport because she already missed her friends (Raul, Fabian and others from the entertainment staff). They were very personable and made sure to stop and talk with the kids.
2) The grounds are well kept and very beautiful.
3) The Beach is the best. Clear water, clean sand that doesn't get hot, plenty of lounge chairs to rest on, you can feed the fish right there in the water. My husband snorkeled from the beach and found beautiful sea shells as well as snapped some photos of a Barracuda!
4) The pools were great. Swim up bar was fun.
5) The restaurant service was fast and courtious. If we asked for it we got it and fast. The two specialty restaraunts were good, my favorite was the Mexican Restaraunt, great food.
6) My kids loved the drinks made especially for them, such as the Pink Panther (I enjoyed that one as well), the Power Ranger, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck etc. It made them feel included as well.
7) The resort was very safe and the security staff were excellent. Camillo was one of the security staff in the evening and he was very friendly but also very professional, making sure we were safe out by the beach at night (my son loved playing on the huge chess board next to the beach).
8) There was a wide variety of food to choose from. I did not care for all of the dishes, but always managed to find something I liked to eat. My kids loved the chicken nuggets, french fries and spaghetti..........and the desserts!
The things that could use some improvement were:
1) The rooms need serious updating. But we didn't care, we were only in our rooms to sleep or shower and change clothes.
2) They could do some improving on their food buffet.
3) Beware if you bring a calling card to use to call home, they do not work at the hotel and to call direct from your room to the USA is something like 3.50 per minute. My cell phone, which was supposed to work in Cozumel, did not work either. I ended up buying a calling card in downtown Cozumel when we were shopping and used it to call home. If you have Verizon Wireless they will tell you the phone will work, but it did not work for me.
4) The exchange for Travelers Checks or US Cash in to Pesos is 9.5 pesos to the dollar at the hotel. In town it is more like 11 pesos to the dollar.
5) The gift shop is expensive. If you want souviners, they seemed the cheapest of all places, the airport. We found a shop there (while waiting on our flight back home) and the prices were very reasonable as compared to our trip to the flea market area and in the hotel gift shop. For example, a wind chime I had looked at for $4.00 at the market in Cozumel was four for ten dollars at the airport shop.
PS We did smell an odor occasionally, however, an avid diver and friend explained to me that the smell is sulfa and is nothing the hotel can control.
Hope this information helps!
We will visit the Allegro again!
