Just got back from a week at the Allegro in Cozumel. We were there April 15-21st. Had a great time. The reviews scared me a bit however we stuck with our orignal reservation and gave the Allegro a try.

The good things about the hotel are:

1) Great Staff-very friendly.
Activies group always had something going on to do. Their nightly shows were fun! I have not idea how they keep up but they do a wonderful job! My kids loved them. My six year old cried all they way to the airport because she already missed her friends (Raul, Fabian and others from the entertainment staff). They were very personable and made sure to stop and talk with the kids.

2) The grounds are well kept and very beautiful.

3) The Beach is the best. Clear water, clean sand that doesn't get hot, plenty of lounge chairs to rest on, you can feed the fish right there in the water. My husband snorkeled from the beach and found beautiful sea shells as well as snapped some photos of a Barracuda!

4) The pools were great. Swim up bar was fun.

5) The restaurant service was fast and courtious. If we asked for it we got it and fast. The two specialty restaraunts were good, my favorite was the Mexican Restaraunt, great food.

6) My kids loved the drinks made especially for them, such as the Pink Panther (I enjoyed that one as well), the Power Ranger, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck etc. It made them feel included as well.

7) The resort was very safe and the security staff were excellent. Camillo was one of the security staff in the evening and he was very friendly but also very professional, making sure we were safe out by the beach at night (my son loved playing on the huge chess board next to the beach).

8) There was a wide variety of food to choose from. I did not care for all of the dishes, but always managed to find something I liked to eat. My kids loved the chicken nuggets, french fries and spaghetti..........and the desserts!

The things that could use some improvement were:

1) The rooms need serious updating. But we didn't care, we were only in our rooms to sleep or shower and change clothes.

2) They could do some improving on their food buffet.

3) Beware if you bring a calling card to use to call home, they do not work at the hotel and to call direct from your room to the USA is something like 3.50 per minute. My cell phone, which was supposed to work in Cozumel, did not work either. I ended up buying a calling card in downtown Cozumel when we were shopping and used it to call home. If you have Verizon Wireless they will tell you the phone will work, but it did not work for me.

4) The exchange for Travelers Checks or US Cash in to Pesos is 9.5 pesos to the dollar at the hotel. In town it is more like 11 pesos to the dollar.

5) The gift shop is expensive. If you want souviners, they seemed the cheapest of all places, the airport. We found a shop there (while waiting on our flight back home) and the prices were very reasonable as compared to our trip to the flea market area and in the hotel gift shop. For example, a wind chime I had looked at for $4.00 at the market in Cozumel was four for ten dollars at the airport shop.

PS We did smell an odor occasionally, however, an avid diver and friend explained to me that the smell is sulfa and is nothing the hotel can control.

Hope this information helps!

We will visit the Allegro again!

This review is probally going to be long but it will tell you many helpful tips. First the resort is beautiful perfect grounds that they have people working on 24/7 just beautiful. The beach is nice and clean tons of chairs and many chairs by the pool but why would u lay by a pool when thirty feet away is an ocean and sand and a beach!? The rooms could use some renovationg. I stayed in the first floor rooms. The walls are thin but we had no problems cuz you don't go to Cozumel to stay in your room allday. The porches were great i couldn't get out of my hammock! The beds on the King rooms are bigger than Kings they are enormus! Nice bathrooms and if you tip the maid a dollar a day she will give u fresh bottle water and towels and flowers or some design on your bed. Now the drinks were awesome...yes they are very watered down but if your looking to get drunk just order a ticket to fly! Everything was nice entertainment, the front test was a little rude but other than that the people were nice. Main reason i went down there..the diving. Divemasters were great. Some odd boats where the tanks were kept in the middle but they carry them up and help you in them. we had pingo as our divemaster. Funniest mexcian you will ever meet. he knew where everything was. The drift diving was amazing. It reminds me of going over a highway if you see something you like sometimes you just gotta fly right over it and forget about it! Some places had a really strong current but some places were really nice. The ocean was suprisingly cold around 78-80. Although i only had a spring wetsuit on. The other boats are nice and they are small groups with no more than 8 per group. You can rent lockers and store you stuff there and there is three rinsing tubs that are right off the pier to use for your personal use. If you want to do a real deep dive like Punta sur or a wreck dive u must go up and request to do it because they wont bring you yourself. Now I suggest you parasail. It was awesome and so much fun. I could see the whole island and cancun and playa de Carmen over on the mainland. Just great! And go into town! Rent a car is much cheaper than going everywhere with a taxi. Dont go on the front roads they are expensive they get all the cruise ship people. Go on the back streets and the people will be happy to barter with you. They find it to be a very fun game, but its hard to get left alone in a mexican shop. i got annoyed several times but this is how these people make a living so you have to understand. I got silver earings forom 48 to 20 dollars so im sure they would be willing to barter with you. The food was exellent. Great food bar everyday and the buffets were amazing. I would have to say though i was not impressed with the two restaurants ( which if you are planning to go to I would make reservations for them the first couple days your there for later in the week). I liked the mexican more than the Italian but they just didn't have the variety of foods that the buffet had. Overall my family and I loved the resort, would reccomend it to anyone and if you have any questions please email me!

We went through Bel Air Travel, which was great. Our agent was very friendly and helpful. Once we got to the resort everything that could happen did. We waited at the front desk for about 2 hours, finally when we got to talk to someone the screwed up all of our rooms (there was 6 of us and a baby). We had asked for all of the rroms to be together and a crib for the baby. We had to go back to the front desk 3 times before they got it right. The crib was a play-pen that was dirty and so old that it was falling apart, real safe! The room we were lucky enough to get; barley had any hot water, the T.V stand was falling about and the door kept closing so we have to wedge something in the corner to keep it open. The bracket to hold up the curtian fell right out of the wall several times. The air-conditioning was loud and it leaked all over the floor. The best part was when we came back to our room after a long hot day at the beach, and the miad had turned our air-conditioning off. The food was terrible, the service was the shits! We had to ask about 10 times for spoons and water and to make things even better they ran out of pop and water in the buffet for 2 days, so if you didn't want to drink beer of wine you were out of luck. Most of the time we went up to the buffet and the platters were bare. My boyfriend and I were even told one day to huury up and finish Breakfast as the buffet was closing (This was at 10:00am) even though the buffet didn't close until 10:30am. 5 out of the 7 days we were there my boyfriend had to go and get a wet towel and clean off the bird crap from the pool chairs, that is if you got a pool chair that wasn't broken. The funniest part about this trip was when I saw that we have to pay for steak and lobster. I thought that this resort was suppose to be an all-inclusive. Through Sunquest we were supposed to receive a complimentary bottle of liquor, fruit basket and gift certificates towards a massage. We never received anyone of those things. I would have to say the thing that topped off the whole vacation was when I heard screaming come from the room bellow us, a huge lizard had managed to get itself into the room and must had awaken the travelers and better yet the next night I opened the closet door and there to greet me was a cockroach. This resort in my opinion was not a 4+, more like a 3-.

Like many others, I checked out the Allegro reviews prior to my trip and was concerned about what we would find. I will offer this review based soley on the experience of my wife and I, no one else. The folks at the front desk of the Allegro were a little unwilling to go the extra mile, but we were prepared for this because it had been reported countless times in the reviews. We found that a small tip here and there made them somewhat more cooperative, but they still have a long way to go. Our room was somewhat small, but once again we knew this was the case so we were not disappointed. All of the amenities within the room worked as they were intended during the entire length of our stay (March 6-13, 2004). The often reported musty smell was not present in our room. We had brought some incense but used it so we wouldn't have to bring it back home. There is no doubt about it, the rooms need some upgrading...a coat of paint would go a long way. We were always supplied with plenty of bottled water and the maid service was excellent. We ate most of our meals in the main room. All meals in this particular facility are buffet style. There was plenty to choose from and although not haute cuisine, it was definitely satisfactory. The waiters were prompt and courteous. The two specialty restaurants were very nice, the food was excellent, nice atmosphere and were a nice departure from the main buffet. The grounds were constantly being groomed by the staff. There was no trash to be seen anywhere on the resort. There was an occasional odor from the septic ponds, but anyone who has ever travelled to a tropic locale knows that they will likely encounter this somewhere. The beach is superb at Allegro, one of the finest I have ever seen. There are a lot of thatched structures or palms to provide shade when the temperatures soar. We were there for a week and did not see a drop of rain, nothing but hot, sunny days. The swimming from the beach is excellent with a nice sandy bottom and no rocks. Snorkelling from the beach we saw huge schools of fish, spotted moray eels, angelfish, rays, barracuda and grouper.Through our tour guide I made arrangements for 5 dives on the main reef. The charter service was "Dive with Martin". They were always very prompt and picked us up at the Allegro dock on time. The Divemasters were very attentive and were very insistent upon safety. We never had more than eight divers on board which made for excellent diving. I would highly recommend this dive charter to anyone visiting Cozumel. Within the resort itself, Dive Palancar offers a dive refresher course for those who have not been underwater for some time or are unfamiliar with ocean diving. My wife took this course and found it to be very beneficial. Her instructor was courteous and attentive to the point that she felt very comfortable getting back in to the marine environment. We were pleased to find the Mexican staff to be very accomdating, hard working and willing to ensure customer satisfaction. My wife was very impressed by how respectful they were to the ladies. My wife and I have stayed in many luxurious hotels and resorts in our travels. Clearly, the accomodation at Allegro is not anything near luxurious, but it is definitely adequate. Besides, when we travel to a diving location, we do not expect luxury. We want the beach and the dive sites to be luxurious. The reefs of Cozumel are a true paradise for divers. We have always been huge fans of the Bahamas, and took this trip to Cozumel after four previous trips to Nassau. We will return to Cozumel and the Allegro next winter...this time, for two weeks!

Our family spent one week here at the Allegro. When we first arrived I was just amazed at how beautiful the grounds were. The front desk was friendly and we were taken to our rooms. The kids stayed in one room while we stayed in another. The room the kids were in was a bit rustic. The tub was in pretty bad shape and there was a little musty odor. But after the room windows and door were flung wide open, things started to improve. The beach is wonderful and the kids had a blast in the water. The staff we thought was extremely friendly and kind. The food was good, but we wish it would have been a little hotter. By the time we got back to our table, it cooled off pretty fast except food prepared by the chef in the dining room. The kids had a great time and the shows that were presented in the evening were spectacular. Very well done and entertaining. I would have to rate the Activities Staff an A+. Yes, we would definitely go back with the children. I heard a rumor that the rooms were going to be renovated and I can't wait to see that!!!
