Travelled March 13-20, 2004 and stayed at Allegro Occidental in Cozumel. I picked this hotel because it appeared to have the best rating for a beautiful beach according to other reports and the travel agents I spoke with. The beach and pools were absolutely beautiful. You could arrange snorkel, diving, fishing, etc. right there at the beach and the boats took you directly from the dock. The diving was awesome.
You can snorkel from the beach but you must swim out a small distance.
They do provide snorkel equipment and life jackets free. I was mainly looking for a hotel with a great beach and pool and the Allegro certainly had it. However, on the other hand, the food was OK - not the greatest at times. Mexican Food Night was awful. Because it was a busy time to travel one evening we had to wait in line 40 minutes in order to get our table. They begin serving dinner at the buffet at 6:30 so I recommend getting there around 6:25 so you don't have to wait. We also made reservations at their Italian Restaurant and it was really good.
The Italian rest. provided excellent service. The hotel indicates you can only make reservations to eat there one night; however, the waiter at the Italian restaurant suggested we go back and make reservations under my spouses name this time -- just a tip. The worst part about the hotel was the rooms. They are really outdated and kinda small. We did have a few small ants but the room was cleaned daily. There was a sewer smell several times in the evening. I would rate the rooms a 2 star, beach & pool 5 star, buffet OK, drink variety 3+ star, etc. Overall, we had a great time. We went for the water activities and did not plan on spending much time in our outdated room. If you want a 5 star hotel, the Allegro Occid. is not it but the beach, pool, diving, etc. are excellent. The weather all week was 85 degrees and it only rained about 2 hrs all week. The weather was beautiful. There are no refrigerators in the rooms. We did the vacation time share thing they offered to visit the Occid. Grand Hotel which took 2 hours where they try to sell you a vacation for life package. We did not purchase. The room they showed us at the Grand for this Vacation Package was very nice; however, the beach at the Grand was really small and dirty.
