Travelled March 13-20, 2004 and stayed at Allegro Occidental in Cozumel. I picked this hotel because it appeared to have the best rating for a beautiful beach according to other reports and the travel agents I spoke with. The beach and pools were absolutely beautiful. You could arrange snorkel, diving, fishing, etc. right there at the beach and the boats took you directly from the dock. The diving was awesome.
You can snorkel from the beach but you must swim out a small distance.
They do provide snorkel equipment and life jackets free. I was mainly looking for a hotel with a great beach and pool and the Allegro certainly had it. However, on the other hand, the food was OK - not the greatest at times. Mexican Food Night was awful. Because it was a busy time to travel one evening we had to wait in line 40 minutes in order to get our table. They begin serving dinner at the buffet at 6:30 so I recommend getting there around 6:25 so you don't have to wait. We also made reservations at their Italian Restaurant and it was really good.
The Italian rest. provided excellent service. The hotel indicates you can only make reservations to eat there one night; however, the waiter at the Italian restaurant suggested we go back and make reservations under my spouses name this time -- just a tip. The worst part about the hotel was the rooms. They are really outdated and kinda small. We did have a few small ants but the room was cleaned daily. There was a sewer smell several times in the evening. I would rate the rooms a 2 star, beach & pool 5 star, buffet OK, drink variety 3+ star, etc. Overall, we had a great time. We went for the water activities and did not plan on spending much time in our outdated room. If you want a 5 star hotel, the Allegro Occid. is not it but the beach, pool, diving, etc. are excellent. The weather all week was 85 degrees and it only rained about 2 hrs all week. The weather was beautiful. There are no refrigerators in the rooms. We did the vacation time share thing they offered to visit the Occid. Grand Hotel which took 2 hours where they try to sell you a vacation for life package. We did not purchase. The room they showed us at the Grand for this Vacation Package was very nice; however, the beach at the Grand was really small and dirty.

While on a cruise in Cozumel we bought a membership to Occidental-Allegro Resorts. The sales people told us many lies, which we didnt realize until we tried to use our week. After paying for our vacation up front, they told us our hotel was overbooked and we HAD to go to Cancun. We were practically thrown in a taxi. We ended up staying with friends (5 people in a hotel room) for the full week because they told us each day there "may" be a room the next day. I have contacted the home office about this and they do not seem to care. In fact, it seems to be common practice at Allegro to overbook their hotels. I met several people who were affected while there. DO NOT BUY ANY MEMBERSHIPS WITH ALLEGRO, because you may never get to use your vacation where you THINK you bought.

Be very careful of airline times from your travel agent. We were "suppose" to fly out of Midway at 10am - turned out travel agent never looked at times -- was 3:15pm. We were there from 3/13/04 to 3/20/04. Very strong Brine and Sewer smell. If bringing kids - plan that meals might not have things for them for dessert -- bring some boxes of cereal back for them to eat before bed... The staff shows were ok. Could use better perforances from the staff for nightly stage acts. Do not plan to have found available all through the day if you leave for a trip and come back expecting food right away -- between lunch and dinner. Expect to have to stand in line outside the buffet area at the main restaurant if you are there at the peek time or else come early or later. The bathrooms were FILTHY w/ mold in the corners and smelled very bad!!! There was no ventilation to take the "smells" out. The staff cleaning the room took my sons jean shorts that had a book and matchbox car in - never got them back. The beach was the only good part of the experience of the resort. Do not rely on the food to be at a great level. We were disappointed!!!! Take advantage if they are offering a "visit" to the sister hotel to get a reduce price on transportation rental to tour the island. A chance to get away from the place for a day. Often only had one person at the bar by the main pool to handle all the people waiting in line as well as the people at the pool-side bar. Not very good planning of mgmt!!! :( Had a few days that had rain -- but they can not hold off the rain -- a higher power has control over that. The pool water was colder than the ocean. If chance, drive to other side of island -- water on Altantic side was much warmer than gulf side. Would not recommend this place for any vacation. There was even rust and mold behind the toilet and the around the sink was spots of mold. Our phone did not work either. Will find allot of calcium and "stuff" on fixtures in the shower too. :( You would not invite friends and family to your house if it looked like this. I think that should be the standard that people would want -- would you be willing or want your friends/family to visit you if instead of an hotel it was your home?? - I would never let anyone in the door -- expect for a MAJOR cleaning. When you ask for the hammocks -- don't expect them to be put up. If you are expecting to be waited on in the dinner area (buffet) for water/coffee/cream (not real 50/50 - if you drink coffee) it is NOT there. Often we went to the server station and got the water or coffee ourselves. Often ended up w/ stack of plates before they were removed. I realize that the place is in the jungle -- but there were baby (little) inguana's in the restaurant area -- on the walls and ceiling. Hummm If you are thinking of going to this place -- think of someplace else!!! If you don't expect much for the money -- then you should be happy -- but if you work for your dollar and want to have it spent wisely -- find another place. Do not get the idea that this place is the best on the island. Their website shows 3 stars and other web sites show up to 5 stars. 3 stars is getting closer to the truth. Enough said!! I wish you the best.

The Allegro grounds and beach were beautiful, but that was the only good part of the resort. The rooms are really in need of repair: broken toilets and showers, mold, dirty floors etc. were found in most visitors rooms. The food was only mediocre at best and several staff were more than a little unfriendly. Bartenders refused to make drinks at times. The floor in the main dining buffet was slippery with grease from cooking. Would not be willing to recommend this resort to anyone.

Just returned from a great week. Excellent staff, beach, pools, snorkeling, activities, fruit smoothy bar, and layout of facility.
Above average brunch and variety of drinks. Average food by the pool and nightly entertainment. Jeep tour was fun but be ready for a long ride with plenty of bumps. The occasional sulfur smell from the water used to irregate the lawn is no big deal. Recommend making reservations for the two non-buffet dinners as soon as you arrive, visit san miguel on sunday and stay for the evening entertainment on the downtown square. If you want a lounge chair on the beach and under a tiki hut then put a towel on the chair before 700am. I'm glad we did not rent a car for the week (plenty of taxi's) and the inclusive worked well (it would have been painful if we had been charged for every margarita).
Last item - other vacationers were very friendly and often eager for activities such as sand or pool volleyball. Althought it was spring break and their were college kids at the resort (18 year old drinking age) there were no rowdy problems.
