We stayed at HVWS the last 2 weeks of May. The Splash Pool wasn't finished which was disappointing for our 2 1/2 year old but we went in the relaxation pool every day which was great. Yes there was paint coming off and yes in one area the floor was crumbling but it didn't spoil it for us.
Food. Breakfast and lunch were fine, no complaints. Dinner we found very little choice and no children's menu but we managed to eat (put it this way, I certainly didn't come home any lighter) something each night. The last 2 nights we were there they opened a kids corner. At least they were trying to improve things.
Our children went in the creche some mornings and had a great time! The staff were professional and very kind and caring. Thankyou Natalie, Claire, Dawn and Sara for taking such good care of my babies. We also put the 2 1/2 year old in a few evenings which gave us the chance to stay up a little later.
The evening entertainment was fine. The kids village time from 8-9 was great. Our daughter loved every minute. There was usually a quiz after that which was a good laugh followed by the main show at 10. We didn't go to the main show as we had to get the kids to bed.
Our daughter - 2 1/2 had swimming lessons with Lisa. I can't express how good Lisa was. Our daughter still talks about her all the time. She had 5 lessons over the 2 weeks and can now swim with her arm bands on and gained loads of confidence in the water.
The kids park was brilliant.
We had a few issues with general cleanliness at the hotel - Floors were really dirty in the room and lobby bar. I saw them clean them but they were not using clean cloths/water so all they did was move the dirt around. Had to put shoes on as we got out of the shower to avoid dirty feet. The rest of the room etc was clean - bedding, bathroom. Didn't bother complaining about this.
Overall we really enjoyed ourselves. The reps were helpful too. The staff at the hotel were friendly.
Our worst experience was the flight home, nothing to do with the hotel. We had upgraded so expect free drinks etc. The plane was dry!!!! The greedy lot had drunk it all on the way out and there were only limited drinks available for us!!!!!!!!!!
I think maybe 4* is a little ambitious of FC but it was fine. I would go back, in theory, but we never go back as there are too many places to see, hotels to try in the world to return.

  • Liked — Relaxed atmosphere, creche, swim lessons, kids village time.
  • Disliked — Evening Buffet - limited selection.

My husband and I went the end of May. It was horrible, from check-in to check-out. I had booked a room with a King sized bed; however, ended up with double beds. Tried to exchange rooms three times, with no luck. The exchange list was misplaced or they were full, blah, blah!! Plus, the beds sit on concrete frames, so they were very hard. Two days into our vacation from hell, the main pool was closed for re-surfacing. So while admiring the oceanside, instead of hearing the waves I was listening to sanders at the pool. Plus, the bar ran out of glasses. I warn others to beware of Allegro Cozumel, it is now under new management. I will never stay in another Occidental facility again, and plan to spread the word. Ending on a positive note, the food was good and the dive shop were awesome.

Hey guys. I went here in May, some of the first people to go there since it was re-opened. It was the best two weeks of my life. The staff are very helpful, especially the guys in the resturants - shoutouts to Felix, Miguel and Alhehandro. You have to make reservations for the Mexican and the Oriental but it is well worth it. The pool bar was closed for a little bit - due to the paint coming off but it didnt cause us any problems. There was a few holes in the gorund which were being filled when we left because they were putting palmtrees up. Lots of lizards wandering around, the beach is amazing and the jacuzzi is right by it and you can have cocktails brought to you and its just fantastic. The in2action team is awesome, Steve, Sav, Clare, Hannah and Flic are great and they couldnt do enough for us - volleyball, water polo, french bowles and anything else you can think of they do. The quiz @ 12.30 every day is brilliant - I won and got a t-shirt. We went to Dolphin Discovery and did the Royal Swim - got an hour with the Dolphins and got the DVD, warning though it is $51 but me and my friend split the cost, well worth it though. We also went to Xel-Ha on the main land ($20 deposit) for the snorkels and everything but it was the best day out, recommened you buy some bio-degradable suncream - you have to have this because it a natural lagooon and such. We did an excursion from the hotel which was snorkelling in the sea. 3 dives spots and such, saw sharks, turtles, barcudas, stingrays and everything. It was the best holiday ever and I wouldnt hesitate to ever go back there. Hope this helps. Ask me any questions if you want! There was a wedding when we were there, which was beautiful too. Rooms were clean and got cool towel animals made on our bed everyday, didnt know what we'd get after a day by the pool. Check in was a little slow but we got champagne and they had dancers - asmming this was because it was the first day it opened. THe ferry across to Playa Del Carmen was cheap and it has it some nice shops. If you do anything the whole time you are there, go to Xel-Ha. They also say to do the Tulum experience too, I know a couple who did it, saud it was good but we didnt do it, and glad we didnt because we just wanted to swimm in the lagoon as much as we could. Got very sun burnt though so keep applying the cream!

  • Liked — The location, beautiful scenery and just fantastic
  • Disliked — the splash park not being open, the food wasnt mazing every night!

My partner and I are in our mid 20's and travelled alone, so this isn't really a review about any of the kids stuff as we booked the adult only section of the resort. We haven't had a holiday together for about 3 years so it was supposed to be a relaxing lovely holiday.

I don't want to start of by being negative so firstly I will say what we did enjoy. The staff in the mediterranean restaurant were great as was the chef, the food was delicious and the only place we ate once we realised we could book it more than once. The beach is beautiful and watersport activities (snorkelling gear etc.) are free which I thought was very impressive, my partner made a friend and they both went off in a kayak to explore while I sat and nursed my sunburn! The water was clear when we were there and fish would come and swim right around you in the shallow water which I was amazed by!

I booked the all inclusive package through First Choice and what I am presuming some of the visitors not from the UK may not be aware of is that in the FC brochures and website the hotel and whole package is made out to be magnificent, almost like a palace and they will tell you whatever you want to hear (i.e. there s no building work going on) even if that is not true, (as there was certaintly building work going on unless using a grinder to remove the surface of a pool isn't considered building work)!

So while people certanly were moaning, I can't really blame them as I felt disappointed about some claims they made which were not true especially for the cost of the holiday.

I also felt it was a bit sad that a lot of people from different countries took a dislike to each other just because of where they live, we made friends with a couple from Texas and they were very nice, others should perhaps be less judgemental when they meet someone from the US/UK, you may as well be nice and you won't have to see them again after 1 or 2 weeks if you really don't like them!

We thought the hotel lobby was nice, the gym was good, we didn't go to the spa so cannot comment. The buffet dinner was ok although there really didn't seem to be very many vegetables although I did mention that on one of the comment cards they give you to fill in. We didn't really like the lunch buffet as most things either had butter or cream in or were fried. Even the rice was buttered one day! We liked the buffet breakfast, plenty of cereal, toast or fruit, whatever you wanted (we used the mediterranean restaurant breakfast and the waiter there was lovely).

Our room was more of a 2 or 3 star compared to other places we have stayed. We realised our backache was from the concrete topped with mattress which was supposed to be the bed....odd idea!

One thing we found quite funny was when some other guests told us that they had been on the internet on Tripadvisor and the internet had been 'pulled' every time someone realised they were looking at Tripadvisor!

All in all its not a horrible place, but I couldn't recommend the hotel, there are just too many things not finished which are advertised by FC as being completed. A couple we spoke to there said the holiday village in Spain is really nice so perhaps that would be a better idea.

  • Liked — Mediterranean restaurant and the staff who worked there, the beach and clear blue sea, watersports, other people we met
  • Disliked — The bed, the lunch buffet, some of the other staff, the very odd late night 'towel delivery' was very weird
