We just got back on the 24th from a week long stay at the Occidental Allegro resort in Cozumel. I feel that we got our money's worth. If you go there expecting 3-star service, which is what it's rated as, anything else will be a plus! If you check the prices of other resorts in the Carribean, you'll see that this is not any where near the most expensive, so don't expect to be pampered too much, you didn't pay for it! I didn't see any rats, as I just read from some other reviews (luckily! - that would have freaked me out!) The food was adequate, not gormet. My husband loved the beef dishes. There was always a pasta station, lots of steamed veggies, a fruit and salad bar, and enough variation, with a few mexican dishes. We found that if we got to dinner early, before the staff was completely worn out, our service was much better. But, we really didn't go there to eat. Eating was just a requirement for energy to do what we really wanted to do, and that was to spend time at their most breath-taking beach and to scuba dive. Their on-site dive center was fabulous! We're open water certified, but one person in our group wasn't certified, so he took the resort course. He enjoyed the experience a great deal - I think he's still smiling! HOWEVER, if you're a resort diver, you must speak with the dive instructor about not taking you below your 40' maximum depth! This one instructor took the resort diver WELL (and I'm talking WELL) over that depth! Their boats and gear were in good working order. Everyone at the dive shop learned our names by the end of the trip - and we learned theirs, too. I can't wait to go back!We were satisfied with our room - it was a bit small, but we weren't in it for that long. We did bring ant spray after reading this site, and did use it once. We also brought insulated drink mugs, after reading someone else's suggestion on this site. THAT WAS A REALLY GOOD IDEA! They had a fresh fruit smoothie bar, which we took advantage of. The bartenders were good, too.I found that a little tip money goes a long way there. Just a few dollars here and there made a big difference in the level of service that we received. I've read alot of complaints about lack of service, and I think this makes the difference! The grounds were immaculate, lush and tropical. There was an occasional drunk jerk here and there, but you run into that at all resorts. Free entertainment, I guess. Speaking of entertainment, the staff did as good of a job as they cound, but I wanted to see some cultural dancing, singing, etc. So, I was slightly disappointed there.A bit of advise upon checking in - ask to be as close to the beach as possible. Then, you're away from the sewage processing plant - adjacent to the restaurant! They put us close to the beach and dive center, so it was really convenient for us to lug our gear to the dock.If you have time to visit the spa, I had the best swedish massage! Her name is spelled ARA...something. It was the best! I pulled a back muscle lifting an air tank, and after she was done, the pain was gone!I hope this information is useful - as this site has been extremely helpful to me!
