We just got back from spending a week with a couple of our friends at Occidental Allegro. I don’t understand the bad reviews on this hotel because I can assure you that this place is wonderful! I researched many hotels and read all of the customer reviews, the good and the bad reviews. I questioned whether the people with the bad reviews stayed at the same hotel that we did because we all thought it was great! Anyone that has something negative to say about this hotel clearly must have ridiculously unrealistic expectations and must be impossible to please. My husband and our two friends that we vacationed with agreed whole-heartedly.

The rooms are very clean, simple, and nice. We stayed in the Premium rooms, so maybe that makes a difference. The roof is a made of grass, so the room does get humid, but you also should acknowledge that you are in a tropical climate, so humidity is just a part of the experience. We didn't mind the humidity. We just turned our fan on and the A/C and had no problems. The bed was firm, but I didn't find it to be uncomfortable at all. The bed did have a piece of egg carton foam on top on it and we slept great. The maid came in and cleaned the room every day and left these beautiful, intricate towel animals with flowers on our beds (a different animal every day). Every room also has it's own patio with it's own hammock. What is there to hate?

The drinks at the bar were very good. My husband likes his drinks a little stronger, but the bartenders were more than happy to pour an extra shot in the drink...you just have to ask! We tipped the bartenders, the waiters, and the maids every day because they all worked so hard and they all deserved to be tipped. The service at this hotel is absolutely fantastic! They are incredibly nice and very hard working.

We thought the food was great. Typically when it is an all-inclusive resort you can expect the food to be descent, but nothing special. However, we all thought all of the food at Allegro was fantastic. There are five star resorts that haven't had food as good as we had at Allegro. The breakfast buffet was always an impressive spread. The omelets are amazing! We all enjoyed the lunch buffet too. They had hamburgers and hot dogs daily and the hamburgers were very good…I never tried the hot dogs. They also had a huge spread of hot and cold food that did change daily. If there was a dish that I didn’t particularly like, I got something else…that’s the beauty of a buffet. Overall, though, the lunch buffet was very good. The dinner buffets were always good. They had a different theme every night. We ate at the Italian restaurant once and it was good. We ate at the Mexican Restaurant twice, which was excellent! My husband, our friends, and I all agree that we did not have a bad meal once all week…not even close. We all enjoyed the food very much. I also have a very sensitive stomach and I had no problems all week. That tells me that they store and cook their food properly, which is very important to me.

The beach is gorgeous, the pool bar is wonderful, and the grounds of the hotel are beautiful. We do scuba dive, but we did not use the on-site dive operation because we found them to be just a little more expensive than the others in town. If you use another dive shop, though, have no fear because the other dive shops will just pick you up by boat directly from the pier at the hotel!

We loved it at Allegro. We will all refer business their way and we will definitely go back!

  • Liked — It's a toss up between the beautiful grounds of the hotel and the friendly staff
  • Disliked — That we could only reserve one night at each restaurant, although it really wasn't a big deal because we loved the buffets too.

A fine clean all inclusive resort south of downtown by 15 kilometers. I had a upstairs single room with king size bed...let me clarify...a king size concrete platform for boxsprings and a rigid, single boxspring/mattress on top of the concrete platform. I kid you not. Only the folks who own the timeshares get decent beds...and all the companions I met had the same uncomfortable bed as I. Yes it does matter to have a decent bed to sleep in. It has take me 2 days to recover in my own bed.
The food was buffet style and fresh everyday. The dining room had linen tablecloths and a pleasant staff. They provide afternoon and evening activities. I met canadians, english, some from latin america and the occasional gringo american like me. Every staff member was upbeat and friendly. This is a couples type destination, and I went alone. I felt a little out of place but what the heck, the diving and snorkeling is great and I went to relax.

this hotel really sucked. i was there a day and had to get out. the food was disgusting covered with flies. the staff at the front desk was rude. the rooms were gross. tiny and damp. anyway if you like travelling no frills this is the place for you. its low budget but if you really want to stay at a much better hotel fro a little more money stay at the occidental grand which is about 5 minutes south of it. trust me on this. dont waste your money on this place.

  • Liked — i dont think anything?
  • Disliked — the whole place should be bull dozed and started over

My husband and I and two of our friends just returned from a week of vacation at the all-inclusive Allegro resort. The place was fantastic! The food was excellent - they fed you practically all day long. The staff was very nice and helpful and each day our rooms were made up fresh and clean with towel animals decorating our beds. We had an amazing time - it was the most relaxing vacation we have ever taken. The grounds are beautiful - there's a wonderful beach not too far away and the pools are great. A big plus is the swim up bar and the free catamarans; we had a great time sailing around the resort.

I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this place. If you are looking for a great, hassle-free, fun vacation spot in Cozumel then look no farther than this wonderful resort. My husband and I will definitely return!

I have stayed at 2 resorts in Cozumel. The Iberostar (Jun 06) and The Allegro on this trip. If you want a wide variety of food, I'd go to the Iberostar. If you want a great beach, I'd go to the Allegro.

Beach at Allegro - The beach is AWESOME. Probably the best on cozumel. The bottom is sandy and the water is calm. There was enough to see that we were entertained snorkeling for some time. The best way to snorkel is to enter the water on the north end of the beach and let the current carry you south. There is an octopus hiding in a big tall rock straight out from the lifeguard chair - maybe 100 feet. From what we heard, he has been there for several years. We found sand dollars and different varieties of fish. We saw stingrays, trunkfish and a barracuda from the boat dock. In contrast, the beach at the Iberstar is nice but it's hard to get in the water...it is very rocky.

The Grounds - The grounds are nice...typical resort grounds. I must say that they are not near as lush as the grounds at the Iberostar.

The Rooms - The room was what we expected. Pretty basic but clean. The beds are hard but they are hard at every hotel in Mexico. It is true that the walls are paper thin and you can hear everything.

The food - The food was good. We ate at the Mexican restaurant one night and it was super yummy. There wasn't a lot of selection at the buffet and there wasn't a lot of higer end food. We didn't have shrimp or lobster while we were there. The Iberostar had a huge spread with lots of seafood. There was definetly more to eat at the Iberostar.

Activities - We spent most of our time diving which is always awesome in Cozumel. We also rented a car from Rentadora Isis. We paid $30 (insurance and tax included) for a VW Bug. No air/no radio - very basic but it beats the $100 you'll end up spending if you rent a jeep at the resort. We had the car all week and had a great time driving around the island checking everything out. We did the snorkeling/glass bottom boat trip through the dive shop at the resort. They took us to Columbia Shallows and paradise. It really was great snorkeling. We saw turtles, a baby shark (about 2.5 feet), eels, lots of fish and beautiful coral. Snorkeling Columbia will give a snorkeler an idea of what scuba diving is like.

Overall, we had a great time and I would reccommend the Allegro. We paid $850 per person including tax for 7 nights flying out of a small airport.
