“Beautiful hotel, terrible buffet!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2005

The hotel is very beautiful and relaxing. The fact that it has its own entrance to Chichen Itza made things very easy for us. The guide that we hired (Jaime) was the best tour-guide I've ever seen. He was extremely nice to everybody (not only us), and very enthusiastic.
We were very pleased with the hotel except for one thing: the buffet. It was really overpriced. Just a few things available: hot dogs, some pasta, and mexican food. The fruit seemed to have been for a week laying in the sun and the waiters were very rude. They took away your plate before we even finished.
Some of the staff at the hotel were nice, while others had some kind of attitude. Hospitality wasn't very common at this hotel.
Also, when we had breakfast, we were very surprised when they brought the bill. Without prior notice, they added taxes! Something that never happens in Mexico, not even at this hotel when we booked the room right there. It seemed like they were trying to get money out of us in even possbile way. Even they take advantage of how hot it gets there, so a bottle of water was more expensive than a coke.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel in May 2005. We had no doubt that we would love it, based on the reviews. Within the first evening, it was already the worst hotel experience either of us had ever had. The staff was just downright rude. When we checked in, they gave us no information about the hotel, services it offered, meal times, etc. Never a hello, never a smile. We arrived late in the afternoon and had not eaten all day. We asked if there was a snack bar, or someplace where we could grab something small before resting. They said we would have to go to the lunch buffet, which was already closing. We grabbed half a plate of fruit. They charged us $40.00, and demanded to be tipped, even though there was never any service. When we asked them to charge it to our room, they kept us there for 20 minutes before determining that the receptionist had not fillied out our paperwork, so we would have to pay cash. When we tried to exchange money, they were out of it.
The room was dirty, our water rarely turned on in our bathroom, the phone didn't work, and the staff kept just walking in at us at all times of the day for no apparent reason. We ended up eating all our meals at restaurants in the little town of Piste because the food at the hotel was so bad and expensive.
When we left, they didn't ask how we enjoyed our stay (we never complained about aything to them, by the way) or any of the usual niceties you receive. We are not picky people by any means, and have stayed in some pretty Third World places, but the staff at this hotel made the entire thing miserable. We havfe never been so happy to leave a place in our lives.
