“Taste of Chichen Itza, Great place if you like Nature and Archeology.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2012

Real surprise and hidden secret of Chichen Itza, if you want to taste CI the traditional way. They have a great Hacienda style resort, with their own organic vegetable garden and speciall access ruins, refreshing swimming pool and rooms without TV and phones. Very close to Chichen Itza ruin entrance.
We checked in at around 3-4 PM and settle down nicely. Explored the property and enjoyed the evening light and sound show in CI ruins park. After a sound sleep that night returned to the ruins again next day morning and experienced the 7th wonder of the world fully till noon.
Also enjoyed their special (a bit costly) food for dinner and breakfast.
Overall, if you like nature (plenty of birds, plants, trees to explore onsite) and feel how archeologists must have lived here for bringing the wonder of chichen Itza to us, this is the place to stay at.

Room Tip: Since the property is itself a nature park, and even though the rooms are clean, excercise caution n...

My 12-year-old son and I spent two nights here and loved it! The gardens are sensational, and our room -- a free upgrade -- was very spacious and charmingly decorated. It's an easy walk to the ruins, safely far from the tour buses, and an historic attraction in its own right. There was a spectacular rain storm our first night there, and it was amazing to sit on the veranda and watch, listening to the incredible cacophony of frogs. The grounds are full of interesting paths -- be sure to wander about -- and don't miss the old, picturesque chapel. We had a fantastic morning birdwalk with Biviano (sp?), who is also a member of the guitar trio that plays so sweetly in the restaurant evenings.

If you are going to visit Chichen Itza (and you should) you must stay at this wonderful resort. It's truly magical. The songs of more than 250 species of birds surrond you, the rooms are spacious and relaxing in small outbuildings, with a fabulous hammock strung across the front patio, the pool is large and shaded, and the restaurant in the main hacienda is grand and the food is certainly more than acceptable. And the history of the archaeologists who initially stayed in the small cottages as they did extensive renovations in the 1920's. The main benefit - you have access to the back gate of the actual archaeological site and can beat the crowds in the morning, having the site almost completely to yourself. And don't forget to attend the sound and light show in the evening. I must say that as foodies, we were worried about the reviews of the restaurant, but we found the food more than acceptable and the service a little haphazard but very friendly and well-meaning. We also took advantage of the spa and had a couples massage which was very enjoyable. And the little shop has some wonderful finds. Oh, and the wonderful flower petals artfully placed in our bathroom and bedroom were much appreciated. The prices here were higher than other places we stayed on the trip, but the sense of relaxation and history made it very worthwhile. Please note: no TVs, very limited WiFi (hover around the main hacienda) and when you leave make sure you get good directions to get back on the proper toll road, the signs are confusing).

Room Tip: We were in a master suite with a king bed.

If you love to wake to the sound of birds this is your venue. The most magical gardens with so much bird life. Nice cottages set in an old hacienda with extensive gardens. The pool is huge and sparkling. We enjoyed walking around the property. You are very close to the ruins of Chichen Itza which is a short walk away. We ate in the restaurant 2 of the 3 nights we were there. I'd rate that OK. I didn't enjoy their combinations of flavors and had hoped for some traditional Mexican food.
Nice little musical group played around the dining rooms.
Didn't have any spa treatments, they were a bit pricy for our South African Rand.

Room Tip: I believe any of the rooms would be lovely.

We recently stayed at the Hacienda Chichen and whilst ideal if you want an early start seeing the ruins at Chichen Itza I would suggest you stay at one of the other hotels closeby. When we arrived a lunch was in process for a number of foreign dignatories. As a result all the staff were occupied making sure all the officials were happy and well fed but this meant that the only thing on offer to us as guests to eat were burgers. We managed to persuade them to make 3 sandwiches which were fine but they charged us over £25.00 for them and on bringing the bill reminded us the service was not included. On the plus side the hotel has a faded charm to it and the setting is very tropical and peaceful. However the major negative aspect of our visit was the dinner. I can only describe the food as 'school dinners' for which they charge London prices. I order gazpacho soup (which was ok) followed by pork medallions which basically was pork shoulder that had been bashed and covered in some very bland sauce and tasted like shoe leather. I do not recall what my wife had but it too was tasteless. For 2 starters and 2 mains and 2 soft drinks they charged us nearly £70.00. I do not have an issue paying this sort of money for good food but they are just taking advantage of their location to charge unjustifiable prices for the food.

We spent a few nights at the Hacienda Chichen and really enjoyed the hotel. As mentioned, the hotel is a short walk to the back entrance to the ruins and we were there when it opened at 8AM. It's a huge advantage to be able to beat the tour bus crowds, it was like we had the place to ourselves for an hour or so.

We were very pleased with the room and the grounds are just stunningly beautiful. The birds are very entertaining to watch and listen to, especially in the morning. We both loved the pool and swam both days we were there.

We ate in the restaurant one evening and the food was very good. It was very quiet the while we were there in the middle of the week. My wife ate breakfast both days while I was out walking and told me her breakfasts were excellent.

We will have to come up with another excuse to visit the Hacienda Chichen the next time we visit the Yucatan. We both feel it's a very special place.

My wife and I spent two nights here, during a recent visit to the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza. Our choice was based, in large part, upon the many positive recommendations of other TripAdvisor travelers. We were not disappointed. The grounds are beautiful and the bungalows cozy, although a little rustic. It is a very peaceful setting with many singing birds adding to the ambiance.

We stayed in the Master Suite of the Catherwood Cottage. It featured a covered porch with two rocking chairs, a hammock and a small table. Inside is a small living room, a spacious bedroom and a large, but rather dark bathroom. There is AC and a ceiling fan, but no phone or TV (which was fine with with us).

We ate all our meals here. Unlike some other reviewers, we thought the food was good but not great. The portions were large and the prices moderate. The service was good.

Overall, we felt that this was a very nice place to stay at Chichen Itza. The entrance to the ruins is just a short 5-minute walk away. The only hotel closer is the busy Mayaland that caters to tour groups. We would definitely recommend this hotel to others.
