“Santiago was a great guide!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2013

If you plan on going, you can go with a group or by yourself. If you go by yourself, note that you need TWO TICKETS to enter the grounds. One is a small white card, the other is a larger ticket. Santiago stopped us before we went in to let us know, as he happened to be a guide. We decided to tour with him and it was worth it. It was like having a Chichen Itza history professor, walking you through a lecture while you admire the sights. After studying archaeology in California, he moved to Mexico 30 years ago to do these tours. He truly loved the history and culture. Anyone can see the beauty in the sights, but to understand them, you should either do your research ahead of time or get a walking guide there.

“Unbelievably stunning!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

I literally left my guided tour group immediately just to take glorious pictures. It was really amazing to see how they've managed to restore it and the other ruins quite well. And I actually learned about the symbolism of The Snake for the Mayans, it's ironic that they see it as a symbol for fertility and abundance. Oh, and the cool sound you hear when you clap in front of the El Castillo! That was fun. The only downside are the souvenir vendors that seemed to have populated the surrounding areas. I myself couldn't resist buying some though, they were mostly just too persistent! Overall it was a great experience, would definitely come back!

“HUGE PYRAMID 30 meters high including the temple on top”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

The size of this pyramid, called El Castillo; the different view from every side: the magnificent serpents on the northern side; the meaning of the number of stairs and terraces to coincide with the 365 days of the year, and especially the knowledge that all this was built by the pre-Columbian Maya civilisation somewhere between the 9th and 12th centuries

“Most impressive! It's just a part of a magnificent site!”

The only thing I didn't like was the bombardment of souvenir stands along every path at Chichen Itza.
