We'd heard good reviews of La Habichuela downtown Cancun and when we went to make reservations were told they've opened a "new" branch on the hotel strip. How nice. The new location is right on the bus route. The ambience was romantic, new and near perfect - I was only scared when I had to walk over a part of the stair that had an acrilic cover over some artifacts! We were escoted down toward the twinkling lights in the garden and amazing ambience around the themed ancient Mexican "ruins". We were seated in their kingly/queenly wrought-iron chairs at a lovely table on a tier between the inside and outside of the restaurant (lucky because it rained!) with twinkely lights all around. Good spacing beween tables. The staff was so attentive and had good answers to any questions we had regarding the menu. Overall we loved it. We heard others around comment that they would love to bring their friends. Although reservations are recommended, Cancun was pretty quiet when we visited (swine 'flu + low season). The restaurant was reasonably busy with tourists and business folk for dinner.
and would recommend this restaurant for a nice evening out in Cancun.

Go to the one in El Centro which is the original. Sit in the garden area. Have the margaritas on the rocks and definitely have the Caesar salad for two. The Mexican and Mayan coffee for dessert is to die for. All of the food is good, you can't go wrong with anything. Very romantic but also good for a group.

We spent a 3 week trip traveling throughout Mexico. La Habichuela was one of the best restaurants we experienced in our travels. From the moment we stepped in the door, the staff offered exceptional service. (We had our 2 kids under 3 with us!) The food was really good--the Coconut Soup specialty was awesome. They even provided a dessert for my son, who was turning 2. The Mayan coffee was an amazing show of flames and fire--definitely worth the $4!!

The location is off the "tourist circuit"--a much welcomed change from strips of American restaurants and tourist traps We strolled through the little square after dinner and watched our kids ride on the little motor cars you can rent Also lots of cute stands to shop at. We never once felt unsafe or "in the ghetto". Beautiful evening and worth every penny.

We dines at La Habichuela ( the new one in hotel zone) in October 2009. From the moment we arrived until the time we left, we were treated with incredible service from all. The place is beautiful. We sat in the gardena and were thrilled with our table. The waiter was quick to joke and entertain us as well as provide some excellent suggestions. The wine steward knew his stuff as well. The table side "flambe" was something you should not miss. The food was superb. We have been to fine restaurants in Vegas, Key West, Boston, Atlanta, Dallas, and NYC. Our experience here rivals any of them.

Don't go here. Plenty of better food and better prices in Cancun.

The food here is average. The drinks are average. It's in a ghetto part of Cancun. The decor is the same since it was founded in the 70s. The service is average. For some reason, our concierge recommended this restaurant to us. Not to mention, that it's #1 for restaurants in Cancun on tripadvisor. I can't understand it. It's all average. It's not terrible. Just overpriced and WAY overhyped. And I rarely bad-mouth anything. But, we were on our honeymoon, and my wife and I very much wish we would have used that night for another restaurant. There are so many better ones to choose from the in the area. Go to Rio Churrascuria instead. And whatever you do, don't let the lady take your picture. She'll guilt you into paying $12 for it at the end of the meal.
