We loved this place! We originally were in room 533 which has fantastic view of pool area and ocean. The room was lovely - TV/Cable, CD Player, IPOD dock, alarm clock, mini bar with free beers/soft drinks/water, lovely bathroom with rain shower, safe, iron/ironing board etc.
The hotel itself is very calming and there were only a handful of children around (it is described as adult orientated, but they do allow children (and pets - we saw a couple of little dogs in handbags!) so very peaceful. Just what we wanted.
The hotel is very clean and all of the staff were very friendly. The first day we were there it rained and reception lent us an umbrella so we could go out.
We were all inclusive which was great, however one thing missing from the room was a hotel directory telling us what is and isn't included. We asked reception and they did give us a list. The list was ok and showed that most things were inclusive. The main drawback was that you have to sign for literally everything you have. Initially we checked our account a couple of times at reception because a couple of the checks we signed had amounts on them - we had been told it will say 'No Charge' on the check which the rest of them did. We were not charged for anything we shouldnt have been, but always best to check which wasn't great as we were checking with everything first.
Apart from that, it was fantastic.
The location was perfect. ME is a 5 minute walk to La Isla shopping centre which has Planet Hollywood, i Store, Nike, a fantastic place called La Madonna which do amazing martinis and so much more.
The hotel lifts are a running joke with all who stay there – there are 4 lifts to use, but they are very slow and you end up going up before you go down even if you press down etc – every time!! Was quite funny in the end!
Buses are SO cheap and every couple of minutes. Cab would cost approx 100 mxn (£5) to La Isla so gives you an idea - lot dearer than buses.
We went to Walmart once –don’t bother – its rubbish , unless you want something particular. You can find everything else you need not far away. There are plenty of chemists around.
We didn’t do any of the nightlife stuff as we wanted a chilled holiday, but the Rose bar in the hotel is great and has a very cool vibe with a different theme each night.
On our 2nd day, we met Rafael our concierge who then made us a booking to see some other guy (Poncho) the next day for breakfast - reason for this as we had enquired about an upgrade to ‘The Level’. We didn’t know why we had to see Poncho, but we met him anyway and he was lovely. He proceeded to show us some Level suites – gorgeous. We thought it was so he could offer us a costly upgrade. However, he then he explained about the Sol Melia Vacation Club(knew there was a catch!) Anyway, after he explained everything and showed us what joining would give us in benefits each year , we joined and are really glad we did. Holidays are really important to us and now all we have to do is sort our flights out and we will get a suite wherever we stay! We also were upgraded for free to a Loft Suite for the remaining 10 nights of our stay!! Room 617 was our suite and it had the same facilities as the other rooms, but with jaccuzi bath and also a huge terrace with Bali Bed! (NB Regualr rooms and even other suites do not have any outside space/balcony-) Also, being on ‘The Level’ gave us room service for free 24/7 (admittedly in regular rooms the food was free and you just paid $5 USD per person for the service), also robes/slippers, better seats in all of the restaurants (will come on to those next), also a romantic candlelit dinner on the beach and 1 free movie night with popcorn, pizza etc!! Also a separate concierge for Level guests only on 10th Floor.
Restaurants: You have to book with a lady sat in the area near Salt/Silk every day for your chosen restaurant and time. Book early! Restaurant choices: All are excellent!
There is Salt (where breakfast buffet is –amazing breakfast choice-anything you can think of) and Mediterranean dinner.
Silk: Asian –amazing! – being in The Level we were sat down in a separate section and had our own chef cook in front of us – fantastic!!
Beachouse: Lovely sit down lunch and a la carte dinners (Mexican style) again lovely – make sure you try the tomato soup it is gorgeous!
Watergrill: South American grill – our least favourite, but still nice – they also serve breakfast here if Salt is too busy at peak times.
Snack bar: Lovely burgers, hotdogs, fries, nachos, chicken wings etc by the pool.
The main pool is lovely with swim up bar at Beach House. Also has some ‘water ritual’ jets. There is also an adult pool and infinity pool (make sure you check as we were given the impression you could only go in there if you had ‘bottle service’. We did this one day and it was great atmosphere with DJ etc by pool, but we had to pay 1595 mxn (about £90) for the privilege! Then to find the next day that we could actually go in for nothing (they keep a barrier up at the entrance). All this to get a bali bed in the adult area. That is a main ‘grievance’ we had if you can call it a grievance while we were there. You had to pay for all bali beds by the pools or on the beach (min $40USD per day!!!) we stuck to the normal loungers every day except for the one day mentioned above as we begrudged having to pay that much for a bed. Lots of them were still vacant every day and only a few were ever used on the beach – silly – if they were half the price, more people would use them and they would still make their money.
It was our 2nd wedding anniversary while we were there and we chose that night to have our barefoot meal on the beach – it was absolutely fantastic and our waiter couldn’t do enough for us. They even gave us a desert with Happy Anniversary written in chocolate!
Also that day to make it more memorable, we booked Wet n Wild and swimming with dolphins (through Rafael and we got a discount as we had joined ‘the club’. ) It was an experience we will never forget – absolutely brilliant-highly recommended. The dolphin part is at the side of Wet n Wild and you get your park ticket included in the whole price.
We also went to Chichen Itza – this was another one of our free ‘incentives’ for joining the club! Wouldn’t do it again – Very long day and although the actual place is incredible, and hour to see it all is enough and yet because it takes so long to get there, it takes up a whole day of your precious holiday. But, we’ve seen it so a tick done there!
We also did a Jungle tour (another free incentive!! – If you join the club make sure you barter with them for benefits!) This was great – small group with your own speedboat out to a reef for snorkelling.
The Yhi Spa is amazing too – as being on ‘The Level’ you have free access to the Yhi Spa facilities – amazing Jacuzzi, various experience showers, sauna, steam room and amazing outside terrace pool with different jets and bubbles! We went in there about 5 times over the holiday and only once did we share the pool with anyone else-so relaxing.
They also have a gym and hairdressing/massage facilities there – we didn’t try these though.
Overall, bali beds, lifts and hotel guide (or lack of it) aside, we ABSOLUTEY LOVE THIS PLACE and can’t recommend it enough if you want to be treated like VIPs and have a relaxing holiday. Everything is top quality - furnishings, food, drinks etc. DON'T BOOK ANYWHERE ELSE - BOOK ME!!
