FIRST THE HEAVEN
the food, restaurants and the service from the staff at this resort is the best ive ever experienced.
Even though some of the restaurants were closed due to low occupancy we could find great food every night, at first the menu's look scary and you think please give me a buffet, but once you start to try some stuff it is absolutely gorgeous and after what was mostly 5 courses you are stuffed to the gills. The service in the restaurants and bars was mostly excelent with one bad experience in cocotal of very poor attention by the waiter.
The drinks from all the bars can be as strong or weak as you like, just ask for your prefference.
The pools, the beach and the hotels grounds are great and very well looked after.

THE HELL
upon arrival we were greeted in reception by a young lad (didnt get his name) tallish, skinny funny hairdo, suffice to say i was ready to go home there and then, we asked if we could upgrade (we were willing to pay) he told us the resort was full, yeah right, 20 mins later we were told it was 40% full by the concierge, he couldnt be bothered more like.
The room was terrible, the air conditioning didnt work, the bathroom stunk and we have been to the carribean 14 times in the last 9 years and this was by far the noisest room we have ever stayed in, the airconditioning units on the roof sounded just like a helicopter was landing, the decor and furnishings were tired and ready to be replaced. after one night and much complaining we got moved and the second room was just as bad with a terrible damp smell and a bed as hard as concrete.
Again after complaining to several different people on the 3rd day we got our third room, it stunk of cigar smoke and despite having all doors and windows open it remained for the duration of 11 nights, dont expect privacy we had the full vocal show from the room next door when they were passionate one night and you can hear every word footstep/door opening closing.
The pool beds are reserved by 8am every day, the beach is free till lunch.

My overall view of the rersort is, fantastic food and service but very tired and bad condition accomodation, if you stay in the standard rooms be prepared to be a third class guest to the casita guests.
value for money - no, there are better resorts in the area for the same or less money.

would i stay here again - yes but in a top level casita which to be honest is too expensive when you can get better else where for that sort of money.

UK visitors, if you want an upgrade do it at home, it worked out £180 more for our trip upgrading in resort rather that at home through first choice.

All the said the mexicans are fantastic people and its a great place to holiday.

DO not come here if rain is in the forecast, unless you want to buy a timeshare. We stayed 6 days during which TS Ida showed up in the middle. Rain is a normal thing at this time in this area, however this resort had no rain plan. We were essentially trapped in our room for days with no way to get around or eat, because during rain the shuttles and room service are shut down. They did however provide us with the opportunity to attend the time-share presentation during the storm. Thank you Steve for the high-pressure sales tactics try again on someone a little less disgruntled. To sum things up ... we never got our Honeymoon room upgrade because the resort was apparently full during the storm. Total B.S., about half the staff was super cool and helpful and the other half can go jump in a lake. what a waste of time and money. Go to Valentin Imperial or anywhere but here. Nothing but a bunch of fake people trying to sell time shares and grow MR. MARTINEZ"S empire. He and Lomas can find a different customer

Well, what can I say? What a wonderful experience at EDR Presidential Casitas! Everything was over the top and far beyond any expectations we had! Our butlers Eduardo, Santiago, Julio and Claudia were exceptional, and the wait staff at all the restaurants and bars were fanatastic! Once again, our favourite restaurants were Kampai and D'Italia for dinner, Jo Jo's for lunch and Cocotel for breakfast. We did have a nice dinner at La Isla, but it didn't match up to the other two dinner restaurants. We were disappointed that the lunch cafe Rincon Mexicana behind Fuentes was closed again, but they did have the partial menu at La Cabana(no ceviche - waahhhh!) Fuentes was also closed except for one night, but that was on our first night so never got a chance to eat there. They have done some nice upgrades since I was there in April. They have extended Guacamayas bar by removing the covered pool that was next to it and made the area into a very nice entertainment lounge and moved the stage that used to be in Guacamayas. The swings are still there along with the bar which was one of the cool things about that location. What is also new is they have started playing movies on a big screen in the new lounge area before the shows start which is really cool. They have also replaced the furniture at the beach bar across from Kampaii with new padded benches and chairs and have created nice little conversation pits for everyone to enjoy. The Villas have also had some upgrading done as well - new floors and beds have replaced the old in some of the buildings (last I heard building 53 was in the middle of the remodel). The spa has been moved behind the fitness centre, and the gift shop that was behind Guacayamas bar has been moved to where the spa entrance used to be. So tons of changes and upgrades, all for the better IMO!!
It's still so nice after all the times we have been to EDR, that the experience just keeps getting better each time! Everyone we spoke with had no complaints, and with occupancy so low - only around 25%, all the services and wait staff were always there to make sure you had everything you needed. Have already booked to go back in February - can't wait!!!

Just returned from our second visit to the El Dorado Casitas Royale. We were looking so forward to our return visit at this resort. We were disappointed. Our favorite restaurant (Fuentes) was closed. At least one and sometimes two restaurants are closed each day. You have to get a schedule to see where you can eat. The food quality is no where near what it was two years ago. There has been a change of chefs. One of our favorite lunch spots was the poolside La Cabana for brick oven pizza. Don't bother. The cheese is strange and so is the sauce. All the food was lacking. We did enjoy breakfast at Kampai. It was good every morning and so was the service. We stayed in the swim-up infinity pool casitas. I would not recommend this upgrade. We enjoyed our swim-up casita better on our last stay. If you do book an infinity pool casita, make sure you are on the second floor. Don't pay extra for the swim-up. The presidential suites totally block your view. You cannot book the presidential suites unless you are a member of their exotic club that they will surely try to sell you during your stay. The resort is still nice, but we were expecting the great food and service we enjoyed during our last visit. I guess the low occupancy and economy are taking their toll on this resort. What a shame. We really loved it here, but I do not think we will return. If you are looking for complete solitude and mediocre food, then you will enjoy your stay. It is a huge resort. Lots of walking. The shuttles were few and far between this time. Also, pack your mosquito repellent. We were swarmed from morning to night. Never had a problem with mosquitos at this resort before, but they were swarming. The resort did try to spray them. Of course it is not the resort's fault, just pack your spray. I am very sad to see this resort go downhill. Definitely not 5 stars anymore. Still a 5 star price to stay here.

We went from October 4-October 11 or our honeymoon. We arrived very quickly from the airport it only 30 minutes from Cancun Airport . We arrived to smiling faces eager to help with our bags. We were directed to the check in desk. We checked in and were given a glass of champagne. We came with RCI and were brought to the exotic traveler’s office to be formally checked in. Our room was not ready (although we received a phone call from their office the week before asking for arrival time and assuring the room will be ready) but we went to lunch at La Isla and were told the room will be ready when we returned to the office. It was ready and we were taken by Leo to our room in a golf cart. Our room was a garden view room number 5128. They put all the RCI members in building 51 which was the last Villa and far from most things but it was nice and secluded. The concierge outside our villa were ok they talked a lot but really did not help us with anything.
The pool close to our room was really fun. We enjoyed playing volleyball and my husband loved the water polo. I think they were a great staff and everyone we spoke to was having a great time with the games. The staff at the pool was the same staff that did the shows at night. We only went to one show which was a lot of fun but most nights after dinner the shows did not start yet and we were so tired from the day’s activities that we stayed in most nights. We did two of the off the property activities. We went to Chi Zen Itza and Playa Del Carmen. Chi Zen Itza was so beautiful but very hot. We were told how hot it would be by some of the staff who encouraged us to buy hats and we were so grateful for those hats. The ruins were amazing and the tour guide was really great. The vendors there had the same stuff the hotel did but for half the price. We enjoyed shopping there. Playa was also a lot of fun. The shopping was also cheaper then the hotel. We ate at a restaurant in Playa that was one of the best meals all week. We loved the food at the resort. Our favorite was Kampai; my husband loved the California tempura. Room service was very fast and the food was good. We ate at Cocotal every morning for breakfast. Most days it was very good but if we got there after 9:30 many items was not replenished. Overall we had an amazing honeymoon and loved every minute. The staff at the hotel was so nice and so appreciative of tips. We did not see many people tipping and you do not have to but we felt the staff deserved it. We would tip the golf cart drivers $2-$3, the housekeeping $3/day, and the waiters $5-$10. We probably spend about $200 in tips but it was well worth it.
Only thing we did not care for was the timeshare tour of the property. The tour itself was great but the sales pitch although they say they are not pushy they are. We said no to the tour and we were pretty much were told ok bye and pushed out the door. We were in the middle of the resort and not sure where because it was our second day there. To get to the tour they had you go to the lobby and they picked you up in a cart. We thought we would have been brought back to the lobby but no not the case. We did get a candlelit dinner out of it. The dinner though was not so good and was happy we did not pay for it.
We loved Leo one of the bellmen/golf cart drivers. He was so efficient and helpful throughout the trip.
