First off, I would like to start my critique with a disclaimer: this is a review for a hotel in Mexico. Mexico is a 3rd world country that happens to have some of the most beautiful beaches in the entire world. Nonetheless, hotel employees earn about a DOLLAR an HOUR if they are lucky in this area of Mexico. Just like we don't expect hotel employees in NYC, one of the most visited cities in the world by foreigners, to speak a plethora of languages, please don't expect people who aren't even afforded the opportunity of a free education to learn English just so you can enjoy your vacation a little more while they earn their 8 dollars a day.
If you don't stay at the Grand Oasis Palm, which we didn't, you are treated like 2nd class citizens at times. To start, every time you want to eat, you walk out of the lobby and the first restaurant you see to your right is one you are not allowed to eat at, Los Agaves, part of your all inclusive package, it is part of the Oasis Grand which is next door-LOVELY. Keep in mind however, you are allowed to upgrade for a price....The hotel motto is "Oasis Loves U" and I really came to think that it should be changed to "Oasis Loves UR Money". It is disappointing because the Grand's clientelle get a lot of perks that are in plain sight of the "non-Grand" clientelle, and I even got told that I wasn't allowed to get a bag of popcorn from the Grand's pool when I went over there today to get my kids icecream because the non-Grand's ice cream cart closes earlier than the Grand's....Get the picture?! For this reason, and for this reason alone I walked back to my beach chair and told my husband that I would never ever come back to this hotel again.
As far as the staff is concerned, it was hit or miss, some friendly, some not. Some took the time to get to know our kiddos and us, and some were rude and didn't want to take the time to even get me a to go cup for some decaf. Whatever and what is to be expected in an AI. One cute little hostess entertained my 5 year old all night long and let him seat guests for the show, and when it came to my internet complaint because I paid for 5 nights on my I-pad and found out later it was only good for the device I paid for it on, the English speaking support staff reimbursed me fully and let me pay for the 24 hour time I need for some work....so taking all of this into respect the staff was really nothing to complain about.
We knew what to expect on the beach because we are here every year and my husband is a native. The beach in Cancun before KM 7 is NOT the Caribbean most people are expecting; however, it is perfect for the kiddos with very mellow waves and we knew that. The water isn't the crystalline blue you expect, but with an ocean view room, you can still see the beauty of the sea. Right next to the hotel is a pirate ship party boat and a ferry to Isla Mujeres; my kids enjoyed watching both.
The air worked great, beds were clean and firm, small TV, had to pay for WiFi (per device) which is the norm for Mexico so don't complain they haven't caught up yet, ocean view with no balcony, clean bathroom, nice water pressure, plenty of room for storage
Very pretty and the pool had a lot of shade. My only complaint is that the shallow part of the pool that the kids and parents were drawn to because of the depth was the smallest and therefore super crowded. I was thankful we brought the floaties so I could go to the deep end without having to be in the pool with them the whole time. Althought it was high season, I didn't have a problem finding a place to sit or lay down either on the beach or at the pool. My only complaint for this is it is LOUD!!!!!!! During the day if you are on the right side of the pool there is a loud speaker with the activities and music pumping all day. Then, in the afternoon there is live music on the left side of the pool by the restaurants that goes till 8 pm. We were on the 4th floor and heard the booming bass all day long until all was quiet and peaceful at 8 pm...then it was perfectly calm.
Come on, I don't know what people expect from an all inclusive that feeds thousands a day....I can say one thing, the food beat Allegro hands down by a long shot! And, I was able to find a plethora of healthy options which suites my palate just fine. My complaint is that there is NOTHING healthy in the pool area, limited restaruants if you are not at the Grand, cold fries on the beach (yeah I know, petty), and a lot of repetition of ingredients of food, but overall, for an AI I have nothing horrible to say - This is not a made to order restaurant.....think Golden Corral...:)
So I guess after reading my critique I think the hotel is better than I at first thought it was and had to change my original 2 stars to 3. I think that I was pretty disgruntled today by the lady who kicked me to the curb from the popcorn cart and I really dislike the whole "GRAND OASIS" concept thing. I imagine it is a hook to try to make people want to come back and upgrade for the next visit, but it makes me want to upgrade right out of the Oasis chain. While we were here this time we took a time share tour thing of the Hard Rock - That's where we're going next year...:) After all of these super budget All inclusives over the past 12 years I think I am going to feel like a princess next summer for a week. :)
the higher up the better if you want no noise. The whole entire pool area is VERY LOUD. It is much q...
