My wife and I celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary with a 7-night stay (3/12/13 thru 3/19) at the Live Aqua. Live Aqua was such a truly memorable experience for us that we felt compelled to write our 1st TA review (or any other review) that hopefully will be of some assistance with your planning. Foremost, do not be influenced by a few negative opinions/reviews (that ALMOST guided us to vacation elsewhere) and deprive you of a vacation to die for.
This resort is an adult only (did not see anyone under the age of 23) spa resort with much detail given to fragrances (NOT overpowering). When making non-direct hotel reservations (expedia etc.) we always call the front desk a few weeks ahead and prior to any cancellation penalty (US or foreign) to double check reservation and ask the front desk staff any questions. When I got thru to the front desk (LA tel.# 052998817600…19 cents per min.) I spoke with Tania (i.e. Tanya) and she was extremely reassuring regarding our accommodations and assured us that college spring breakers would not be an issue. Tania was 100% correct!! We did not see/hear any college spring breakers but realize we loved Live Aqua so much we never left!!!
When making the pack/not pack list realize that causal attire is the norm. You will be donning your swimwear/pool attire 90% of the stay (that includes breakfast & lunch). The dress for dinner would be shorts, casual collared shirt and sandals. We always travel light (no checked luggage) and US Air was our carrier. When we secured our seats I gave no thought regarding the boarding zones…this is key if you don’t want to be forced to check your carry-on as you are boarding, especially traveling to a foreign country and you want to immediately get to your awaiting ride to start your vacation. When we arrived at Cancun Airport we passed that dreaded “we’ll help you find your lost luggage room”…let’s put it this way… they need a bigger room. Rear seating, section 1, starts the regular boarders (at least w/ US Air). We were in the middle but section 5, the last to board! They started to announce during section 3 boarding that overheads were at near capacity and to expect to have your carries checked. We were the 1st sec.5 to board and the last they allowed carries…everyone (30) behind us had to check theirs. On the return flight, the same scenario, we had to check but had no concerns. If you’re thinking, “what’s the big deal?” consider yourself lucky cause you have never had any luggage mishandled/lost but when you do you’ll join the carry on only whenever possible travelers club.
Arrival (and departure) at Cancun Airport was surprisingly smooth. Customs was very organized and took 25 min. We secured our own transportation by calling LA and they transferred us to their vendor Best Day Transport Cancun (when you call have all your itinerary available). The cost is $66 US to LA (20 min. ride) for a private non-stop ride in a modern large van. This is the same price as a cab ride. Best Day’s return fee is also $66. You pay the driver when you arrive at LA in cash and be sure to pay him just for one-way cause the hotel’s taxi back to the airport is only $30 plus tip. The airport valet w/ sign speaks fluent English and calls for a pickup (comes within 1 min.) so make sure you have him make it clear to the driver its 1 one-way only fee. Plan on getting bombarded as you make your way out of the airport by transporters. This was confusing for us cause we didn’t want to miss our pickup person. We did not realize that he would be outside/outdoors the airport. If you have a valet waiting w/ your name on sign go directly outside and cross the road, this is where they all have to be. While inside just say “no thank you we’re all set” and keep walking. We did not know this so when this indoor guy told us where to find our Best Day valet w/our name card he sent us to in the wrong direction outside to one of his buddies who would take us to LA “right now”.
Check in was exactly as seen in other reviews. If you have Aqua Club access be sure to tell them as soon as they take your bags cause you check in at the 5th floor not the main lobby. The view from the AC during registration/hand message/time share pitch while you have a soft drink or beer (full AC bar opens at 5pm) immediately puts you in the vacation mode. Yes, registration could take 10 min. less w/out the informational overload regarding possible extra special opportunities they are offering if you view a “presentation” but they were giving us a hand message the entire time! Thanks to TA we were ready so it was made clear from the start…”no thanks, we really want to get to our room now”. How can listening to a 10min. talk while you enjoy a couple ice-cold beers/hand messages as you overlook the ocean bother some people so much? We were asked 1 more time during our stay “if we had heard of their special offerings” and quickly replied, “yes and no thank you” and that was it. By the way guess who we met us during our 5th floor registration in the Aqua Club…Tania from the front desk/looby/1st floor area…the same “Tanya” that I had spoken to on the phone weeks earlier!!!! She notified the AC desk staff to inform her when we arrived so she could personally greet us on our 35th. This goes well beyond doing your job. Tania, like all the other staff members we encountered are sincerely nice people who want to make your stay at Live Aqua very special and personalized. Poolside server Andres, Azur waiter Oscar and Aqua Club attendant Mario were just three of the numerous employees that we encountered that provided wonderful service.
We booked the Aqua Club Access Oceanfront room that guarantees you an upper floor with direct ocean view along with club access. We would strongly recommend no less than these accommodations because room availability (views/floor level) would be dictated at check in on a first come basis with any booking of less than Aqua Club Access. Also, we really enjoyed the AC for its: setting; drinks; coffee; tapas-style menu and causal social atmosphere. The final two nights of our stay we used credits to upgrade to the next booking level which is the terrace suite. This is definitely worth the extra expense and would be (or higher level suite) our choice on any possible return to Live Aqua. The suite was twice the size of our 1st ACA room and includes daily use of a cabana (book early am the day before) with two 10 min. daily foot messages. Cabanas also secure you preferred guaranteed seating for the day without having to wake early to establish lounges with towels/etc. and provide more privacy and shade. Staff allows you to choose your cabana on first come basis so check which view/site works for you. Call the hotel and reserve your cabana at least a day ahead of arrival so it will be awaiting you. On arrival day be prepared that when you go to the pool (if you do not have a suite with a cabana already secured) there will be few if any lounges available. If lounges are still a must, inform attendants which area you will be in when/if any become available while you enjoy the pools, Jacuzzi, beach, swim-up bar pool and oceanfront bars. We are early risers and had no problem securing our favorite lounge/pool spot prior to 7am each day while we made a coffee run. The suites (cabanas) may be the way to go if you love to sleep in so you are not disappointed when you seek a pool chair mid-morning. Cabanas can be rented for $90 per day if you don’t have a suite. Note: the foot messages are great!
Overall our stay at Live Aqua was awesome. LA will provide you with delicious food, drinks made to order, beautiful beach, outstanding room service food, gorgeous views, immaculate rooms/grounds and a staff determined to make sure you have a perfect vacation. Thanks Live Aqua for the perfect 35th!!!!
