“Small and Sweet”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2009

We just returned from spring break and found Gr Solaris to be the smallest hotels we have ever stayed with a great big heart. With the size of the hotel, everything was within a couple of minutes of walking, pool, workout room, tennis court, beach, restaurants, etc. Service and Food was great. Tons of options to chose from. Great drinks as well. The shows were definitely the best shows we have seen and we've stayed at Iberostar(s),Paranusus(s), Excaret, and Royal Park hotels. Only complaint would be gettting a pool chair by the shallow kids area. It seemed people without kids would select those particular chairs when a ton where available else where!!! Really strange. We also enjoyed the water park at their sister hotel at Royal Solaris. Great room service and just a great time. Would return.

We just got back from a 7 day stay at the GR Solaris - Cancun. We were extremely impressed with the hotel and would definately recommend it to anyone wanting a 5 star or almost 5 star hotel. We were pleasantly surprised that we were not hassled about time-share. The staff and service were excellent and we found that staff was always eager to please and happy to cater to any of our wishes or concerns. You could tell that the staff loved their job and they were always greeting you with pleasant smiles. We were there during spring break and our two teenage boys had a great time - they found things to entertain them every day, even though they left their electronic games and ipods at home :)
The only complaint I have about the hotel is the noise level in the rooms. We were in a room with an adjoining door and we could hear everything that was going on in the room next door. Sound proofing of those doors is something that the GR Solaris should consider.
After speaking to other guests who have been at the GR Solaris more than once, say that this is one of the best hotels in Cancun and that is why they keep coming back.

Good job GR Solaris - keep it up!

I'm going to cut to the chase--either the previous bad reviews are a fluke or the people writing them picked the wrong hotel for their needs. I have nothing but positive things to say about the GR Solaris. We arrived around 2pm. Quick check in. We were upgraded to a king ocean view room with a murphy bed for our 5 year old. We were given the upgraded linens, bed, toiletries with no extra charge. We did not have one minute spent on timeshare pitch. Maybe we got lucky. The rooms were great. Always clean, well stocked, and nice little "animals" were made by the maid. I paid them well for their service.

Beach/pool-we loved it. It was a small beach, but perfect for us. We spent most of our time at the pool. Chairs went quick in the morning. We were out by 7:15 or 7:30. No problems.

Staff-Fantastic. The Kid's Club staff was the best. Myrna and Gabrielle were so professional and fun-loving. I'm a teacher and could certainly be critical about a program like this. I could find no faults. Our daughter will miss Myrna and Gabrielle.

Food-I could always find something to eat. Nice breakfast and lunch. Dinner was fine. We typically were not that hungry at the end of the day.

Entertainment-They were a lot of fun. We mostly observed. The staff really liked our daughter. Jocelyn went out of her way to greet us. All the staff were great!

My only suggestion for the hotel would be to offer an earlier show. Our daughter was so tired from a day a the pool/beach that we never made it to the shows. Next year.

We also enjoyed the spa. Both of us got a Swedish Massage. Very nice. They aim to please.

Workout room was perfectly adequate. Much better than the ones found at other hotels (Riu).

Went with my brothers and two friends after Thanksgiving in 2006. The pool was nice, room was fine and entertainment staff was very energetic and involving.

The cost was so minimal that I feel guilty mentioning the food was pretty average. You get what you pay for in many instances and this was no exception.

All in all, it was a fantastic value and enjoyable for people of all ages and various group dynamics. Probably more kids and families than I would've preferred but had a very good time.

The GR Soalris is a great hotel. The service is wonderful, it is very clean, and it is close to other activities such as shopping, downtown, and a choice of excursions/day trips. My fiance and I stayed here the first week of March, 2009 where we met 2 other couples that became our friends. They also have great things to say about the resort. I will try to cover as much as I can here.

Beach/pools: The resort has narrow beach; it has beautiful white sand and turquoise water, however the water is very rough and the red flags were up most of the time we were there. There was a strong current in the water and apparently there are a number of drownings in Cancun each year, however as long as you are smart about when and where you swim you have nothing to worry about. I never felt unsafe. Parents of small children should be especially cautious. There is also a lifeguard on duty. The pools were busy. As the other reviews indicate, people do put their towels out early to save a lounger. However, this is pretty typical of most resorts. We hung around the adult pool which was mostly quiet and relaxing. There was also a larger pool where the activities occur. It was very windy while we were there, but we discovered that it is less windy (and therefore warmer) by the large pool.

Bar: The bar by the pool was great. They have an extensive menu with pictures of all the drink choices. They also have an employee that walks around the pool and beach area to take drink orders. This is quite convenient! There is also a swim-up bar and a bar inside in the lounge area.

Restaurants/food: We were quite impressed with the food at this resort. We made reservations every night for the Marco Polo Restaurant, and I suggest you do the same. They have a different theme each night. My favorites were Italian and Oriental. The food is well presented and it is tastey. I also thought the wine at supper was quite good and if you like goat cheese, you have to try the goat cheese here! The only time we did not eat supper at Marco Polo was the first night we were there. We went to the buffet in the ballroom, which is set up with large round tables where you sit with others. We did not like the atmosphere in there as much, but some prefer that sort of thing. Breakfast was yummy and there are lots of choices. The omelets were very good and I enjoyed the waffles very much! We didn't really eat lunch that often; we mostly just grabbed a snack. The Deli is great. It is not too busy in there and they have very good sandwiches. One big perk of this resort is that room service is included in the all-inclusive package. We ordered the club sandwiches a couple of times and they were very good!

Rooms: The rooms are pretty standard. They are very clean and we slept well while we were there. One of the other couples we met told us about how their walls were very thin and that they could hear the neighbouring family's conversations all the time. We did not experience this but we were on a corner. We had a "lagoon view room", but really it was a view of the neighbouring hotel. From the balcony however, you could see the ocean on one side and the lagoon on the other side. All rooms have balconies. There is a mini fridge in each room and they are re-stocked each morning with 3 beer (Sol), 3 water, and 3 cans of pop.

Other notes: We were lucky that we did not have any time share people hassle us at all while we were there. However, we were mentally prepared for it. Also, be careful not to let anyone take your luggage once you exit the airport as they will insist that you pay them. Also, there are people who have white vans that look exactly like the ones tour operators use. Make sure that you find your tour rep. who will be waiting for you and will have the company name on a sign. When you go through customs at the airport, they do a random search of bags where you will press a button and if the button turns red you will get your bags searched and if it turns green, you go right through. Apparently, 90% of the time you will get a green light.

We went on the Chichen Itza tour while in Cancun, and that comes highly recommended. We booked through our tour operator rep. from Sunquest. We loved visiting the cenote and if we go back to the Yucatan we will make sure to visit more cenotes. We also went to Isla Mujeres (Isle of Women). What a great day trip. We took the bus to the ferry and took the ferry across to the island. The island is laid back and relaxing. It has a beautiful beach and great snorkelling. We enjoyed that day a lot.

There is also Mayan ruins not far from the hotel - just a short walk actually. It is called El Rey. When you exit the hotel, take a right and a short walk up the road you will see the sign. It was 37pesos admission and while it was nothing spectacular it is definitely worth a look. There were tons of iguanas too which were fun to watch.

While we were in Cancun, it was quite windy, making it pretty cold for laying out in a swimsuit. Apparently strong north winds are common at that time of year in Cancun.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel and I definitely recommend getting off the resort and exploring the area. It was a great time and we felt very safe.

Spent 8 days with my wife, brother and sister-in-law and 2 friends. There was tons of food available 24 hrs a day and for the most part was very good. As other reviewers have mentioned, breakfast was the best but the variety of foods available at all the buffets was incredible and you could always find 2 or 3 things to have seconds of. Because they had to use warming lamps to keep the food warm, the meat was usually tough if you didn't get it when it first came out of the kitchen. The servers and bartenders (other than one snotty bartender in the lobby bar) were great and work very hard to make your stay enjoyable. There were a few stupid little rules that were bothersome; you had to make reservations for the Marco Polo restaurant and some other dinner meals at 8 am (what seems like a good idea at 8am doesn't always sound so good at 8pm) and, although there was a cheap champagne available at breakfast (to make your own mimosas), they refused to serve it at any other meal! My pet peeve (and the reason I won't return) is that, as a serious Jack Daniels drinker, I was served Jim Beam on at least 5 occasions when I ordered JD (the last time it actually came out of a Jack Daniels bottle!). The rooms were fine and the maids surprised us each day with a different figurine made from rolled up towels and napkins (a turtle, an elephant, a pair of swans and one day they incorporated the bedspread to make a peacock!). If you want to sit by the pool you need to bring your stuff down by 6am and even then you may not get the spots you want. The adult pool wasn't as crowded but it's heated to the point where it isn't refreshing. All in all, we received tremendous value for what we paid and will return to Cancun, if not to the GR Solaris.
