We visited the GR Dec 10-17. We chose this hotel mainly on price and location(and recommended by a family member). The hotel is located about a 15 minute drive from the airport, wich was perfect for us this year. This check-in process was very smooth, and we were never hassled about any kind of time share BS, I had read many reviews prior to our trip saying that they were.
The hotel is very very clean, I was impressed with how well the hotel and grounds are kept. There is always somebody cleaning something. The cleanliness standard at the GR is very high so have no worries in that department.
I cannot say enough for the staff. I have been to 7 all inclusive resorts and I might have to rank the staff at the GR as the best..Everybody was great from frontdesk, bartenders, cocktail waitress (yes they come around everywhere including the beach to make sure you have a drink if you need one),housekeeping, waiters in the restaurants, pool activities staff, and of course Luis Gomez at the swim up bar.
Pools are nice and the beach is great, although keep in mind these are rough waters and waves and undertow are very strong, but a very nice beach.
The two biggest complaints I might have about the GR would have to be #1 The food. The food at the GR is Ok but the buffet just was bland and really was just a bunch of nothing. The breakfast was probably the best food at the GR. I found the best mexican dinner items at the breakfast buffet ??? Also I found that the guacamole was not all that plentiful, as I only found it at the lunch buffet. The lunch buffet was again just ok. The room service was excellent, and the fajitas that we got were probably the best meal we had here. The 24 hour room service is a huge plus, it has a decent menu and they usually only took about 20 minutes to get it to your room. We only did a reservation dinner one night, it was the surf and turf night outside. Our waiter was alot of fun but the steak and shrimp i got was nothing to write home about. There is something going on food wise different every night in different restaurants in the hotel, check the poster boards hanging up daily to see if you like it to make a resv. In the end , for what we paid for this hotel, the food was good enough.
My next complaint would be the paper thin walls and dividing doors between rooms. It was basically like we had roommates (Honeymooners beware... people can hear everything..). We had a loud group the last couple nights and it got old quickly.
The rooms are nice with good bathroom, shower, decent beds, a/c works great, mini fridge well stocked daily, and cold. The housekeeping did a great job keeping things cleaned up.
There is no free wifi, but you can purchase different amounts of time. People complain about this but for what you pay to come here, i understand it. At the other higher end places that have "free" wifi, you are paying for it in your price if you use it or not, its not "free", i assure you.
In the end this is really nice place to stay if looking for a nice homebase in Cancun that doesnt break the bank. Keep in mind this is a place for the more budget minded traveler. Its a great place and I would recommend this place to folks who like to save a couple dollars on the hotel to be able to spend a little more off the resort....after all Cancun has alot of GREAT restaurants, and things to see and do..!
