“GR Solaris - First Timers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2013

We stayed at the GR Solaris mid November 2013 for our 10 year anniversary. We arrived around 10 am and our room was ready around 2pm.
Overall I thought the hotel was very good. I thought it was very comparable to other similar resorts in the same price range that i have stayed at before. The beach and pool areas were excellent. The food was good, and very comparable to other resorts in Cancun and Playa. We had requested a King room and were given a Double. We had a lagoon view with a small balcony on the second floor. We had noisy neighbors and heard alot of traffic noise. I would recommend ear plugs. Also, I felt the rooms could use a little updating. Our sink had a crack in it and the mirror had some funny spots on it. We only got to experience one show, the Magic Show, but it was very very good! I would highly recommend it. Staff were always friendly and we had no issues while there. I would return if given another good price, but we typically like to try different resorts.

Room Tip: We walked down the beach about 10 mins and got a 1 hour massage for $40!!

We stayed at GR Solaris in early October with a large group of our friends from Maine, USA. We truly enjoyed our stay and felt like we were in paradise. We had an ocean view room that overlooked the pool and ocean. If we were not on a lounge chair under an umbrella on the beach or sitting by the pool, we were on our balcony enjoying the tropical air and beauty that surrounded us! We had excellent maid service and beverage service in our room. The staff were friendly and always accommodating to our needs. My husband, Chuck, was pleased to meet Hamilton, our bartender. Hamilton made sure we always had a beverage in hand. He always made them with a friendly smile and he made us feel welcomed with his pleasant personality. If you have chance to try GR Solaris, look up Hamilton at the bar, he provides great service. Edgar also was a great bartender at the swim up bar! We would highly recommend GR Solaris.

Room Tip: Request ocean view room. It is worth the cost of the upgrade!

We were met by a very helpful and friendly staff upon our arrival. The room was very clean and nice. The food was exceptional! We did not get bothered by salesmen trying to sell excursion packages at the hotel. The staff was the best. They were always willing to help and assist. In any way possible. We've only been home for a day and we're already planning our next trip. The best excursion we went on was the catamaran ride and snorkeling on Isla Mujeres. A big thank you to all we met that made our trip so great! Thank you!!!

Room Tip: The deluxe ocean view room is the best

This review is based upon the following criteria:
Couple, ages 22 & 21, traveled from Toronto to Cancun with Sunwing Airlines, booked with SellOffVacations.com, November 13 - 18, Ocean View Room, Double Occupancy, All Inclusive.

My boyfriend and I are from Toronto and we booked with Sunwing Vacations. We left Pearson airport smoothly, and were on our flight to Cancun on time. The Sunwing plane was not cleaned (crumbs and napkins on the floor beneath my seat) and amenities (headphones, paper bags, magazines) were not replenished. The flight went smoothly, and we arrived in Cancun. We found our luggage and exited the airport to find our Sunwing representative. We had booked all our transportation, excursions, hotel (the whole inclusive package) with Sunwing on SellOffVacations.com. Once we had found one of the representatives, we told him our names. He went up and down the clipboard and said we weren't on the list. We told him we were from Toronto, we were going to the GR (Grand) Solaris, and again repeated our names and assured him it was their mistake and to look again. The representative we were speaking to proceeded to find another rep, and another, and another until we had been through 4 representatives who had no knowledge of us whatsoever. They went on (and had the audacity) to tell my boyfriend and I that it was our mistake for not booking transportation. They pushed us aside to a cab company who then took advantage of us and asked for $100US to get to our resort., They told us that the hotel would reimburse us. I knew this was a load of crap, but I had no choice but to go ahead and hand the driver our bags. He proceeded to put them into the trunk and close the doors. We headed towards the side of the van when all of a sudden a man came running towards us, "Stephanie, Mitchell!". Turns out the only person looking out for us was the driver of the van that was intended to deliver us, NOT the Sunwing representative. He explained to us how he had been waiting for us, and was happy to find us. We were shocked. The cab driver had our names but the Sungwing representatives didn't? Absolutely ludicrous. The first driver took our luggage out of the cab and told us there was a cancellation fee, and I told him to go put it where the sun don't shine. We arrived at the Grand Solaris and were pleasantly greeted with an alcoholic beverage of choice whilst in line to check in. The check in went smoothly, and we started towards our Ocean View Room (double occupancy). We arrived and opened the door to our room to find that it wasn't an ocean view room, and there were two double beds. I was livid. With all the torment and stress at the airport, and then having to deal with this? Incredible. I insisted to my boyfriend we head to the front desk to protest. The front desk was very sorry but could only accommodate us in our Ocean View room THE NEXT DAY. So we ended up spending a day and a half in the wrong room, and then were finally transported to the room we had booked.
Finally, the good stuff started to happen. The assortment of restaurants during different times of the day was fantastic. Buffet style as well as sit down restaurants, all of which had fresh delicious food to eat. I'm not going to lie, my boyfriend and I (as well as many other Americans and Canadians we had met) were experiencing diarrhea throughout the trip, and we assume it's from the water difference or whatever, but it's not like you are incapacitated and totally ill, you just have to go to the bathroom quite often. I suggest bringing some shelf-stable probiotics with you if you can. I regret not doing this! The whole resort was incredibly clean. The staff were amazing. And the entertainment each night was phenomenal! You honestly can't go wrong with this resort. My boyfriend and I didn't feel the need to leave the resort to shop or party, but if you feel like doing this, there is a bus route right in front of the resort, and for cheap, will take you up or down the strip. There are nightclub representatives who will walk around the resort and ask you if you are going out tonight and give you some options of places and prices if you are interested in dancing and drinking at a club outside the resort. The pools are phenomenal! They have 3 in total (one is divided by a bridge). They have an adults only section and jacuzzi! The beach waves were kind of crazy and I guess it's because of the time of the year so we spent most of our days in the pools. Swim up bar is awesome! You meet everyone in the pool drinking at the swim up bar, trust me! They even had water aerobics in the pool! It was awesome! We booked an excursion called "The Coba Mayan Encounter". It includes visiting a shaman, repelling down into a cenote, ziplining (twice), canoeing, and then eating a light lunch before hopping back into the shuttle which then takes you to see the mayan ruins. First of all, we had Eduardo with "Alltournative" and we was amazing! He drove us throughout the excursion and was very funny, friendly and informative. It takes 2 hours each way to drive there and back. The first half of our excursion was AWESOME! So much fun! You can bring a camera and keep it in a locker for use during the second part of the excursion (Mayan ruins) but for the first whole half of the excursion, people from Alltournative take photos of you so at the end you can purchase the photos and videos from them. Once you get back from the light lunch, you walk back to your original drop off place before you trekked into the jungle to pick up your belongings from your lockers. Then you have the opportunity to purchase the videos and photos. We paid for the full package (around $60US) which was 2 photographs printed of our choice, all the videos and photos they took on a USB, and some extras they include like photos of wildlife and scenery (on usb). It was well worth it! When we hopped back into the shuttle to head towards our second half of the excursion (the Mayan Ruins) it started to POUR RAIN! It ruined the whole experience for us because it was just awful being soaked. Make sure you bring cash so you can buy a bicycle cab ride from a guy who wheels you around wherever you want. It will save you time, and your feet from being soaked in puddles.
So on the day we are leaving, we were ready and packed to leave for our 11:15AM shuttle from the resort back to the airport for our 2:45PM flight. We were at the front of the resort waiting for our shuttle and it didn't come. So we had the concierge call the resort next door (where we knew our sunwing rep was staying majority of the time) to find out what had happened. After several calls, and 40 minutes later, the concierge got a hold of her. She told him (didn't have the courage to speak to us directly) that it was a coworkers fault for not informing us that out flight was delayed and our shuttle would be arriving at 3:15PM instead. Again, DO NOT BOOK WITH SUNWING. We could have had the whole day to swim and relax and then pack up for the shuttle, but instead we were already packed and ready to go and had wasted all our time because of these idiots. Finally the shuttle came, we boarded the (filthy, AGAIN) plane, and got home.

Overall, LOVE the GR SOLARIS (4/5 star). Only problem we had was we didn't get the room we had booked and waited a day and a half to get it. I have deducted 1 star from a 5 star review because of this.

Sunwing IS TERRIBLE, AWFUL, JUNK! DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT BOOK WITH SUNWING!

Room Tip: In terms of rooms, they have ones with jacuzzies on the balconies. We do not suggest booking one of...

Our room was beautiful, the food was plentiful and good, the pool and beach were delightful but what really makes this a fantastic place for a vacation is the wonderful staff! Enrique greeted us the first night and really made us feel welcome. Rolando and Alessia on the entertainment staff were FANTASTIC! All of the staff were in constant motion to make sure that we never, ever wanted for a thing and they all did so with smiles on their faces! I almost felt guilty for how hard they all worked just so I could relax and enjoy myself. Our room was huge and clean and nicely decorated and the maid added nice little touches each and every day. Previous reviews commented on the food, but we really saw nothing wrong with any of it. The buffets contained such a huge variety that I would think everyone could find something that appealed to them. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Marco Polo. And on the two days that it rained, the entertainment staff worked extra hard to provide indoor entertainment for us. I also have to acknowledge the wonderful staff in the spa. On the first rainy morning, we decided to get massages. What a wonderful addition to our vacation and I am so glad we did that. We WILL go back again and I would strongly recommend this resort to anyone. Oh, and while we don't have small children, I did notice many activities available for children as well and many things to keep them entertained.

Room Tip: We had a room on the lagoon side with a hot tub on our balcony and it was great. While an ocean sid...

I cant say enough about the staff in this hotel, they'll do anything to make you feel at home always ask if you need anything, get what you ask for right away, they are courteous, and always smiling; starting with Frank at the valet station and our servers Emilio and Gilberto who were great from the get go! The food was great on the Friday gala dinner the other days was ok. There is food by the pool and plenty of drinks. I didn't like that they served beer in the lobby bar on a plastic glass but as long as you ask they'll give you a glass one you just can't leave with it. Our flight didn't leave until 3 so they extended the check out to 1230 we were very happy about that! The hotel has tile all over it gets slippery when wet, rubber flip flops recommended. I didn't care for the smell of the bath towels but they seemed clean. Pool activities are fun, we only attended one show which was the magic show and it was very entertaining even for adults. They have a shuttle that takes you to town of you want to party this is more of a family kind hotel. But here is an adults only pool/spa area.
