I stayed at this hotel along with my boyfriend Feb 15-25. I had pretty much read all the reviews of the previous 2 months so I thought I'd share my own.
We had a great time at this hotel. The grounds are stunning. We visited the other two (Royal Solaris and GR Caribe) and this one is by far much nicer. I was shocked at the GR Caribe actually...it felt more like a prison with it's high white concrete walls.
The GR Solaris is a great looking hotel....a light peachy colour with black balconies...very sharp.
We were on the 1st floor with an ocean view. There was no privacy on the balcony, but it was worth it for the view (which we didn't pay for). We were right next to the elevator, and if you are sensitive to noise...stay away from this area. Everytime the elevator stops it makes a "ding dong" sort of chime, and it can get annoying.
The room was a standard size and the king size bed was a little hard...but not unbearable. We had a great new flatscreen TV with about 5 english channels. The mini bar was always stocked with Sol beer, pop, and bottled water. This was refreshed every day.
I have a bad gluten and dairy allergy which I was kind of concerned about in going to this hotel. I made educated guesses on the food and always found something to eat. For breakfast, I mainly focused on having fresh fruit, bacon or deli meats, and sometimes corn tortillas with refried beans. The fruit was amazzzzzzing so I didn't have trouble with that.
Lunch was best out by the ocean. They always had something wonderful on the grill...one day we shared plates and plates of freshly grilled prawns. The guacamole is endless and absolutely delicious with homemade tortilla chips.
The Snack Bar seemed undesirable but most of the visitors seemed to enjoy it....I guess if you like eating hamburgers and hotdogs and french fries...
We never ate at Marco Polo, basically because I wouldn't really know what to order because of my allergies.
Dinners were good. Salads and fresh fruit and something on the grill was always available. The only time I was disappointed was with the Continental Buffet...it was greasy American food. Blech. No wonder there's an obesity epidemic there.
TIP: Fill your plate like you would at home. Stick to 3 things, like a normal meal....salad, a meat, a starch....then you won't get bored of the buffet. If you eat everything every night it gets a little tiring.
Contrary to previous reviews, we could not hear our neighbours...only the elevator chiming.
ALSO, the pools are ridiculously warm. Whoever wrote that the pools were too cold are absolutely psychotic.
The adult pool is nice to sit down and read and there is always chairs there. The other chairs by the activities pool are ALL taken by 8:00am.
When there is a red flag on the beach, DON'T SWIM. The undertow is so strong and I was nearly swept away. Be careful! On the other hand, the beach here is way better than more north on the hotel strip.
The bus outside is super easy to get places and explore.
The tour company downstairs is a wonderful place to book trips. We booked a trip with Selvatica doing ziplining and swimming in a cenote, and another with Snorkel Puerto Morelos which was amazing and only cost $30pp.
Don't book with the Aquaworld by the pool unless you want to just be cattle on mediocre excursions.
The other thing that shocked (and saddened) me was how American dollars are MORE accepted than their own Mexican currency. Bring $1 bills for tipping, and american dollars for buying souvenirs. I would even hestitate to bring ANY pesos, except for the bus.
