My husband and I just returned from a 5 night stay at the RIU Palace Las Americas.
The hotel itself is meant to be reminiscent of an older time period...lots of ornamental wood and mouldings inside and white stone and statues outside... it's not meant to be modern and sleek as some may complain about the decor being "outdated."
I purchased our stay here on expedia as an oceanview junior suite and requested a "high floor"...We checked in around 4 pm and were given a nice large room in the center on the 7th floor overlooking the ocean (Rm 732). We did have a balcony and although we appreciated having it, we didn't get a lot use out of it.
I was worried about the weather pre-trip since it called for potential thunderstorms and overcast days...but the rain we did get was was very little and in short-spurts. We did have a lot of overcast times off and on, but I came to appreciate this sooo much as it provided much needed shade for laying out by the pool and beach all day--you still get tan even with cloud cover, just much more bearable to lay out for longer!
Our room was nice. I wouldn't call it luxurious, but definitely above average for a hotel in the tropics. No smells and everything was clean and cleaned well every day. My husband and I thought it was funny people were complaining about rock hard beds--so I was going expecting this, but we thought ours was very comfortable...we slept very well every night. We had a king size bed (no indication of 2 beds being pushed into one) and although it was on the firm side, by no means the firmest bed out there or that we have slept on. It had a good amount of "give" for us and we are smaller framed people. My guess would be that some beds have been upgraded and others haven't. Our headboard was a little noisy when making "large movements" on the bed...but no complaints from us on that ;) My only complaints about the room would be no light in the shower (although it isn't as if it is pitch dark as you do have a relatively sheer shower curtain and light from the bathroom streaming through) and no bathroom fan. Also, as another noted in a review, the water does smell (bathroom water) and is not drinkable. It's not intolerable though, and fine for showering. May want to use bottled water for brushing your teeth...(see my last comment)
Buffet food was good/average...for a hotel like this, I'd say it was pretty good and what we were expecting. There was a large selection and it was presented well enough. My husband and I were able to book 4 out of 5 nights at the restaurants for dinner (and it was very easy for us--no line or very short). Krystal, Brazilian, Japanese, and Steak. Steak is the only one I would call mediocre due to the food either being cooked too much or not enough (both veggies and meat), the rest were on par with very nice restaurants in taste and presentation. We were impressed with Krystal and the Japanese restaurant.
The entertainment was great---they work so hard--you can tell. Loved the Marathon show where the staff performed bits of different popular songs! Service in general was EXCELLENT!
Both my husband and I had treatments at the spa early on our 2nd day there...husband had the "stress less" massage and I had a body wrap. Joanne? I think that was her name, did an excellent job with my body wrap--very very relaxing! It is priced about what you would pay in a high end spa in the states, so you're not getting a deal here, but great way to start out a vacation.
We also took advantage of the photo service at the hotel (getting professional photos taken on the beach). It was a fast (and free!) photo shoot (about 25 minutes or so), offering up about 70 photos to choose from. Our photographer was very friendly and easy to work with. We were able to find some photos we really liked and paid the $15 per-image fee in digital form (on a cd) so we could take them home and get our own re-prints.
The beach was perfect for us--the water was calm!! Perfect for swimming. Pools were nice and perfect temperature.
I wavered between giving this hotel a 4 or a 5...(so I give it a 4.5!) We had a fun and relaxing time. I think for the price point of this hotel, I understand justifying the 5* ratings (this isn't a $600 a night luxury hotel), but with some of the food not being as top notch (buffet) and rooms being inconsistent (or so it seems) I understand where the 4* ratings come in too... For this price point (plus or minus 300 a night) I would probably return to this hotel...but for $100-300 more a night I would definitely check out different hotels that may offer more luxurious rooms.
PS. One tip...both my husband and I had mild stomach problems by about the 3rd day into the trip... It definitely wasn't the food. Our tip...stop drinking the water they give you at your table during meals...The waiters seem to laugh every time you ask for water anyway, so it is probably an inside joke of some type that you shouldn't drink the water... May want to avoid ice in your drinks too if you are having the same stomach issues many do on these types of trips to Mexico (not just this hotel...just about every hotel). There are always fruit drinks--alcoholic or non.
