“Absolutely Perfect Vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2009

I stayed at the RIU Cancun with my mom, toddler daughter and teenage niece. We all had an excellent time. There is not one thing that I can think of that was negative. YES it was hot but it is MEXICO in August. The room was perfect for the 4 of us, we really did not spend much time in there other than to sleep and get ready for our wonderful day's. it was AIR CONDITIONED, do not believe what others are saying about the non air conditioned rooms. YES the lobby is a little warm but again it is MEXICO in August, it would be very hard for them to keep this area cool as the doors are constanting opening and closing with people coming in and out. The food was great, enough variety for all. Always something for kids to have. A variety of different ethnic foods of all kinds every day. No compliants at all. Never had any issues with the staff. We had a small issue with our toliet shortly after we arrived and I called the front desk and someone was there to fix it within 15 minutes and it was 12:30 am. Room was always clean with fresh towels etc. The entertainment at night was refreshing. We enjoyed sitting and relaxing and being entertained whether it was dancing or singing. The organized sports at the pool were great too, always a good laugh while listening to the entertainment team. The pools were perfect for all ages, spent each and everyday at the pool. CLEAN each and every day! An EXCELLENT time guaranteed.

This hotel makes for a wonderful get-a-way! The grounds are immaculately kept. We were surprised at just how clean everything was. The beach is large and many, many loungers available. Beautiful, soft sand.
Incredible views of the ocean from every room. The beds are hard, but not horrible. Our air conditioner worked just fine. We were never hot in the room. For that matter, we weren't hot anywhere in the hotel. The maids did a fantastic job cleaning. After they cleaned the room, not a speck of sand anywhere!
The food was fine. We weren't fond of the italian offerings one night but there is so much to choose from it would be difficult to not find plenty that fits your tastes. We tried the steakhouse one evening and weren't impressed. The steaks tasted ok but were very thin. Nothing special.
The pools were lots of fun. The swim-up bar pool does get a little murky. It may be because of the number of people in the pool and all the lotion everyone lathers on.
The entire staff was exemplary. We've never experienced such a friendly staff. From the front desk to the groundskeepers, always a smile and a friendly "Hola!"
We did tip. $5 with our first drink order and a couple bucks more every other round. $3 a day for the maids, $2 for the mini-bar, $2 for the waiters, you get the idea. We were happy to do it, the service was awesome.
If you are looking for a 5-star hotel, this is not it. It is a very nice 3-star plus. You won't be disappointed.

This was our second stay at this hotel and it was just as good as the first one in 2007. The place is kept absolutely spotless, with cleaners on the go from 7 in the morning until late into the night. The rooms are cleaned every day and the linen and towels are changed whether you like it or not! The mini-bar is a godsend and is restocked every other day. The staff are attentive without being pushy (whether you tip them or not!) We didn't really partake of the entertainment other than the terrace bar although most people seemed happy enough. One of the major selling points for us was the location. Five minutes walk from the Party Zone, there are a number of bars where you can pay by the drink but you can also pay a cover charge and stay and drink all night! Our favourite was the Congo Bar where we were made to feel part of the family.
A free bit of advice - visit www.britsincancun.com and make contact with Allen, he can arrange excursions at a much better rate than the Holiday companies. He arranged for us to renew our Wedding Vows at a local marina and did a fantastic job.
Chichen Itza and Xcaret are both excellent trips. The Jungle Tour (driving your own speed boat) is a blast!
The hotel gets busier over the weekends as a lot of Americans seem to take long weekends or mini-breaks but it doesn't change the ambience of the place.

Overall an excellent experience from check in to departure. Fausto at desk upon arrival a consummate professional. We were upgraded to a huge Junior Suite and cocktails were ordered for us as we were checking in. Room was huge, beds are a little hard but not bad. A/C is adequate although not freezing like back in States. Pools were beautiful (4 total) Food was excellent we ate at Brazilian Steakhouse and Japanese which was quite good.

Drinks and bartenders were great, they do have an upgraded list of more premium liquors (Johnnie Walter, Beefeater, etc.) make sure you ask for your drink with the name brand.

Location could not be better, directly across street from shopping and 5 minute walk to night-life.

For the price we paid would have been worth it at double the cost.

We stayed in the hotel for 2 weeks and had the best hoilday so far this year. when we arrived at the hotel in mexico we where given a king size room but as i was with my 18 year old daughter they soon found us a twin room. which when we got to the room was a suite. the room was big and very clean with a fantastic view of the sea and swimming pool what more could we have asked for. The food in the hotel was amazing so much choice and variety that we never eat out. there was food and drink available 24hours a day. The entertaiment team where really good, they had different things to do during the day and the night time entertainment was fantasic, they even put on the play of the lion king and greece, it was like watching a west end show it was that good. the entertainment team where really nice and friendly and took the guess to the night clubs which is good if u are on hoilday with your teenage daughter. The thomsons reps Kelly and Donna where really friendly and very help when my daughter became ill on the second week of the hoilday. This is the best hotel we have stayed in and we advise any one who is looking into goingto mexico that they stay at the Riu Cancun. Fantastic hoilday. we will defently be going back in the future.
