“You cant beat Cancun!!”

My wife and I stayed here last week for our honeymoon. Here is our experiences both good and bad...

Food- Overall it was pretty good but could be much better with a little more creativity. Every night they had roast beef or chicken. The roast beef is some of the worst I've ever had!! Over cooked and rubbery. However, they have a different theme for dinner every night and there is always something that you would like. The japaneese night was great. Jumbo deep fried shrimp were awesome and the soft shell crab. The breakfast buffet was great but after the 3rd day (we stayed 10) you realize that it is EXACTLY THE SAME every single day but they do have almost everything. The Mexican food for dinner/breakfast was actually the most disappointing. We live in San Diego so we know the difference but maybe you wont mind? The Japaneese steakhouse was pretty good. Brazilian steakhouse was avg and we didnt try the other steakhouse.

The Staff- Mixed reviews here. Sometimes they were right on and sometimes they were really off! First the bad...They gave us an outdated menu for Ruth Chris steakhouse and upon our arrival we realized the prices were $20 more for each item we wanted which sucked! For $150 I also expected alot more out of the steak which was just really good but should have been phenominal for that price! Also on 2 seperate occasions we set wake up calls which were very important so we could catch the bus for our tours and they didn't end up calling?!?! Luckily my wife woke up anyway. Also, the bar tenders sometimes get grumpy when you arent tipping them but not all the time. Other than those little bumps, the staff is really good and shouldnt deter you from staying here.

The Rooms/hotel- rooms are Basic but the view from 1109 is simply amazing. The location of this hotel is 6 stars out of 5!! Everything is a 5 minute walk or less to the bars, clubs, restaurants, beaches, and ferry to isla mujeres. This is probably the best feature of the hotel. The drinks at the bars are pretty solid! Dos XX on tap at various locations throughout the hotel is a nice perk. Mini Bar and Bottled beer and soda and water in your room is also great! Restocked every other day! Room service was good. Just keep your valuables locked in your safe and you wont have any issues...

MISC TIPS....DO NOT TAKE TAXI'S...those guys are total D-Bags!!!. They tried charging my wife and I $10 to drive 2 blocks to the laundry mat. My wife is mexican and we live by the border so none of their typical cons would ever work on us lol but its ppl like you that screw it all up for the ppl that know!! (Just kidding haha). Take the bus! It costs $1 per person and you can go anywhere you want in the zona hotelera which only runs in 2 directions (coming and going) so its very easy to get around. Just tell the bus driver where you are heading in advance! TIP #2...if you are booking a tour for xcaret, xel ha, chichenitza, ect...and you want to book through a street vendor to save a buck (which is what we did) DO NOT PAY MORE THAN $10 PER PERSON UPFRONT FOR A DEPOSIT!! THey will try and talk you into paying more and telling you to pay the difference when the bus picks you up but its a scam. The deposit is only $8 or something like that? Anything above and beyond they are pocketing themselves and ripping you off! They guy tried to get us to pay $100 but we knew better!!! If we didnt, He woulda kept $92 for himself and you would have been stuck paying the difference upon arrival to get your tickets! DO NOT TRUST ANYONE OR FEEL SORRY FOR THEM! THEY ARE CON ARTISTS but if you are smart and just use your head, it is a good way to save alot of money compared to buying your trip through expedia ect...

OVERALL...Cancun is simply amazing! Don't be a lame-o and spend your day at the pool like alot folks do! Get in the ocean and go kayaking, sailing, swimming, jet sking, and snorkeling. The snorkeling right behind the resort is just as good as Xel Ha and its FREE!!! Have fun! Book your stay here!! Just dont stay more than a week or it does get repetitive! If i could do it over, I woulda stayed 5 days here and 5 days somewhere cheaper because all the tours are full day tours where you are still spending money for the resorts features even though you arent there to enjoy them. We booked 4 different tours and they are ALL at least 10 hour days where its all inclusive wherever you are going. Something to think about ;) ENJOY and dont be afraid of mexico!! They bark but they dont bite :D

“Spoiled by a few”

Just back from riu cancun, absolutely first class staff and beautiful beach. Food was varied and really good esp the japanese restuarant! However this hotel was spoiled by the groups of young men who with their rowdy behaviour and foul language who spoiled the whole family atmosphere, i really cant understand why a beautiful hotel like this would take groups off these men, who by the way were all Canadians, into this hotel.

“Excellent family holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2012 NEW

I have just returned from a two week holiday at the Riu Cancun and cannot fault it. The weather was glorious - 2 weeks of hot, dry days and nights and no mosquitos. The hotel food and drink was great, but not fantastic, but who's counting? I travelled with my husband and 5-year old daughter and none of us suffered any ill health or tummy upsets, despite eating solely from the hotel and spending most of our time in the pool. During our first week, by the pool waiters brought round drinks and took your orders all day long and they also served a lunchtime BBQ. Not sure why, but this didn't happen during our second week which was a disappointment really. The kid's club was good and the team came round the pool areas to encourage the kids to join in. And each day at the mini disco certificates were awarded to the kids that did join in the activities. The adult daytime entertainment is good with water aerobics, water polo and volley ball as well as beach volleyball. The evening entertainment was good enough to keep you interested in it, and the nightlife of Cancun is on your doorstep. Also just opposite the hotel is a nice air-conditioned shopping mall to visit if you need relief from the hot sun! The beach is also wonderful - soft white sand and glorious warm sea in various shades of blue.
We did a few trips out - my husband went deep sea fishing with a guaranteed catch, although he managed to catch at least 8 fish, and hired a jet ski from the beach outside the hotel. We also went swimming with the dolphins at Wet'n'Wild which was good as you could use the waterpark before and after the dolphins, and went on the Captain Hook pirate ship - this is a must if you have kids as it was our best night during the trip.
I would definately go back to this hotel again if I ever returned to Cancun.

We initially booked the cancun, and once we saw the room we were a bit disappointed. It is not in great shape, but frankly for as old as the hotel is its not too bad. The bed was rock rock and seemed liked it was wrapped in plastic. food was not too bad, drinks are great. access to palace americas areas is a nice touch its all linked. views ares great right next to shopping and bars. this is the party place during the day, but is also family friendly as i would say it was half and half. the families stick to a couple pools and the partiers to theirs. Poala was so helpful once we asked for a different room/upgrade/transfer. nothing was available the first night so we stayed and checked out the next day. she was able to move us to the new peninsula resort which is more of what we expected and were looking for. most guests of the new hotel did go to cancun/palace americas during the day for the pools and beach area though. the location is great and if it werent for the beds and the outdated rooms it would give it a strong 4 overall. the other big issue we had is we heard everything at night as we were close to the elevators and the tile floors were like amplifiers. I think it would have been better as well if the Caribe wasn't being remodeled as it took some of that crowd and mixed it into the cancun/americas. they were transferred to cancun. i wish every hotel could have the helpful and friendly staff of this hotel!

Room Tip: stya far from the elevators and ask for ocean view its very pretty!

“Riu Cancun - Won't stay here again”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2012 NEW

We stayed here Apr 6 - Apr 11. We had booked an ocean view junior suite and were given room 554. We could not get our rollaway bed opened and it took more than 45 minutes and several calls to get a hotel staff to come to our room make that bed. We also discovered that all the suites on the 5th floor dont have a view at all! It took most of the next morning but we were finally given a room with a view! The elevators are another issue. There was only one working elevator to the suite rooms through the entire length of our stay. During the day, the elevators were wet and full of sand. We were unable to go to any of the speciality restaurants because the Japanese one was full and the others had really late dining times which did not work for us because we had young kids - quite disappointing! The buffet food is OK.
On the good side, we took the day trip to Chichen-Itza, which was wonderful. We also took the day trip to Isla Mujeras which is a must do. We did the dolphin discovery tour there which was great except we have no pictures. They asked for $150 for the CD. Seemed like a ripoff!

Room Tip: Dont take junior ocean suites on the 5th floor! Take the taxi to Puerto Juarez for the ferry to Isla...
