My husband and I went to Playa Del Carmen in August and booked a tour with Best Day who are also fantastic to work with. They set it up for us. Eddie was our tour guide who picked us up right on time. We snorkeled in a lagoon where we even saw a turtle, a cave where is was so crystal clear (and cold but worth it) and a cenote. They even fed us and the food was excellent. We highly recommend this tour. Thank you Ramon from Best Day tours who set it up for us at our hotel at the Grand Coco Bay and thank you Eddie for making it a trip that became the highlight of our time in Playa Del Carmen.

My husband and I chose to go on the short morning snorkeling trip on July 15th as our tour person said that this was the best snorkeling around. I have never been more disappointed.
To start with, the driver showed up 15 minutes early and did not want to give us 5 minutes to grab coffee from the hotel in Cancun. The ride to the facilities was fairly short with a horribly bumpy gravel road taking you from Secrets Silversands Resort to the facilities itself. Construction was being done everywhere as you passed through swamp-like surroundings with murky, dark discolored water littered with plastic bottles, beer bottles, etc.
Once we got off the vans, they collected the additional $2 fee per person, passed out lifejackets, fins and snorkeling tubes (used). I have been on quite a few snorkeling trips and have never paid so much money to receive a used tube with deep teeth marks on the mouthpiece. The lifejacket they provided me was too large reaching past my hips and overlapping my waist and chest. When I went back to return it for a smaller one, I was argued with being told that the vest should come down lower and that it was good to have it doubled over as long as it was tight enough. I was sick of arguing and wanted to have a good time so I stayed quite. Needless to say, I spend most of my time in the water tugging down on the life jacket as it was riding up past my neck.
Then they handed out a snack/lunch in styrofoam to-go containers with cookies, juice, a banana and sandwich roll with ham and cheese for us to eat when we finished with the second snorkel. We had to keep all our personal items (only towels and snorkeling gear were allowed on the boats) on open tables with the food when we went to snorkel. You were not even allowed to take a backpack to put your towels in. It also would have been nice to know that you were expected to hide your food well as when we got back, birds had picked at most of the containers eating the sanwiches and bananas. That was what happened to those of us that were lucky. A few people could not find there containers at all _ I am guessing that possibly the large dogs roaming around decided to feed early.
The snorkeling itself was nothing to rave about. The visibility underwater wasn't that great and the water seemed slightly murky. The reef wasn't that well established and there were not much variety to the coral nor fish/aquatic life. A major downer was that you weren't allowed to take off your life jackets to dive deeper (which would have been nice to get a better view with the water being as it was). Most of the time, I tried to avoid being hit in the face by someone else's fins and to avoid kicking anyone else as they had you stay close to the guide.
Next time, I am saving my money, renting or bringing my own snorkeling equipmment and walking down to Club Med Cancun to snorkel.

I went on the Puerto Moreles Snorkeling Adventure and was very pleased. The staff were great. The package consisted of transportation, three 45-minute snorkeling sessions, buffet lunch, and open bar. First, the transportation was cordial and on-time. Once you arrived there was an overview of the days activities, you were fitted with life jacked (mandantory) and fins and you had the opportunity to stow valuables in lockers provided. One note, you had to have biodegragable sunscreen and they small bottles for purchase on-site. The only items allows in the boats were, towels, underwater camera's, snorkels, fins and the biodegradable sunscreen. The first session was in a shallow portion of the reef. The guide when at a leisurely pace and there were lots of fish, sea life and coral reef formations. The seconed session was in deeper water and the reef was fantastic! There were lots more fish and sea life also if you took the time to hover abover the reef formations to check out the life below. After that session we went back to shore and had a great lunch with lots of beverages. After lunch you could opt for the 3rd snorkeling session or remain on shore to enjoy the hammocks, beach chairs, lounging or beach volleyball. I opted for the 3rd session and am very glad I did. We went back to the shallow part, but since it was later in the afternoon there was so much to see. Great balls of fish floating in the currents, giant brain corals, a spider sea star, sea urchins, an eel, giant elk horns and lots and lots of fish. I even spied a large grouper in the middle of a coral formation almost completely camouflaged. It's well worth the effort to go the 3rd time.

After that we had about 20 minutes to chill out before heading to the vans for our trip back to our hotels.

I loved this trip! I would make a few suggestions - start earlier. The van picked us up at 10:30 and by the you were done snorkeling the first 2 sessions it was around 2 pm. Lunch and leisure time was a little rushed to fit in the 3rd snorkeling session and we really didn't have time to relax before heading back. I'd suggest started at 8:30 that way there would be much more leisure time. Also, the travel agents really need to stress that this is a SNORKELING trip and not a party trip. Last, open bar meant beer, vodka, rum, and tequila. They had no means for making cocktails such as pina colada's or marguirita's.

Overall, it was a great experience.

This was a great time! I tried snorkeling in Puerto Vallarta and that was a horrible experience so I was nervous for this one but it was amazing. It was off of a bumpy road with a hotel being built right next door, so that was kind of annoying with the construction sounds. They do make you pay $2 a person when entering for the reef. We did the later one with lunch provided. We all put our regular lotion on before we came so didn't use the bio stuff. The first time out they take you to a shallow part then a deep part. The shallow part was very pretty, lots of pretty fish. They feed the fish so they come closer to you. In the deeper part it was harder to swim as the current is stronger. We ended up seeing a sting ray. At first it freaked me out but it was pretty cool to see. Definetly watch out for the corral, either go around or try and float over the top. After that we went back for lunch. The food was amazing! Chicken, rice, tacos, fish, salad. After resting for a while they allow you to go back out to the shallow part if you wish. My gear worked well. Some complained about the life jackets rubbing them so you might want to wear a t-shirt. The only thing I would suggest for them is for each group/boat to have different colored booies. You go out with like 4 other boats, you're suppose to follow your guy who has a red booie, however so do all the other guides. It can get confusing and trying to stay with the right guy so you get back on the right boat. The first time we lost 2 people since they counted when we first got on but we ended up finding them (they were with a different group). It was a great experience and I would go again if ever back in Cancun.

Let me begin by saying I DO NOT SWIM! But with it being my honeymoon, I wanted to be supportive of my new husbands desire to snorkel.
The agent at Sun Palace strongly recommended this tour and we decided to go with it. We chose the longer tour even though it was our last vacation day. The van picked us up on time and we had a short trip to the site. We were greeted by Raul who explainded to us hen the vans would be back to pick us up and how the tour would be broken down.
A 40min swim in 3-6ft deep water where most of the fish would be, a 40min swim in 10-14ft deep water, 2hr lunch on the beach and then another 40min swim (if you wanted to go) We were quickly given our gear and seperated into 2 groups on 2 boats. Each boat had apprx. 15 people on each. Our tour guide Reuben said that was a small group, but the size felt just right to me.
We loaded onto two boats and on the ride the proper way to use the gear was explained. The ride took about 7 minutes. As soon as it was time to get in the water I freaked out. I managed to climb in the water but that was as far as I got. Our tour guide Reuben told me he'd help me back on the boat as soon as he dealt with someone having a bigger attack. While I was waiting he wanted me to get used to having my face in the water with the mask, but dont worry...I'm coming. For what felt like an eternity he put me off about getting back in the boat...I GET IT! Reuben wasnt going to let me back on the boat! Reuben got in the water, took my hand and held my hand the ENTIRE TIME. He never let me go and he never let me get back on that boat and I am so thankful because it was a beautiful experience. Under water he pointed out all of the diff. coral, fish and stingrays. It was great.
Back on their beach we were served a lunch that exceeded our expectations. Grilled fish, pork tamales, baked chicken and dont forget the Tequilla! the tour boat goes out a 3rd time for whoever is interested.
Unlike most tours we've been on, the staff didnt beg endlessly for tips. They ask once and thats it. We felt this tour was well worth the $70pp.
