“Great Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

Everything was as advertised and the previous reviews on here say it best. Fantastic experience! Diego in the Italian restaurant was especially great! We splurged for the spa package and it was well worth it! Super nice and relaxing experience!

I work for a travel agency and also am a retired airline employee. My wife and I love the Caribbean. This was our third visit to Cancun and the best stay yet. The staff at Secrets The Vine are one of it's best assets. They truely mean it when they say " It's my pleasure". A shout out to the entertainment staff Alan, Victor(Obama), Jose(Winnie The Pooh) and Bethany. Great bunch of young people who kept things hopping all day long and into the night. Loved the water aerobics at noon. Crank up the music guys! Also to our pool server Abundio Garcia who was top notch in taking good care of us.We loved our accomodations. The room was bright, modern and very comfortable. Maria Perez in housekeeping kept the room spotless and fresh. Great location in the hotel district and wonderful clean beach. Four beautiful pools with hundreds of lounge chairs. The water and weather were absolutely magnificant. Bus stop right out in front of the hotel just hop on for one US dollar. The one thing I can say that didn't fit in was the approach to the hotel. To say the least it's not a grand entrance however once you are throught the security gate all that changes to the land of Oz. We generally socialize with others on vacation but this time it was a party. Wonderful people from all over the world. Sean & Lisa and Wendy & Jeff and Armond & Becky and John & Joan and the list goes on. This is a place to come to relax and have some fun. Would we come back? You bet we will. See you next December. My boyfriend and I visited Secrets the Vine in early November. We had a preferred club deluxe ocean view but upon arrival, upgraded to the preferred club junior suite for around $20 more/night. The size increase of the room was substantial and worth it. Check in was easy. We got the brief "time share" pitch, though it's not a time share but a vacation club. Didn't feel any real pressure to participate. We got a follow up call later in the week to go, but just ignored it. Rooms are beautiful. Clean and spacious and modern. Bathrooms are like a fish bowl. Not a problem for (most) couples but just know that there is no privacy if that's important to you. The balconies are nice and though there isn't much privacy, I barely found my neighbors out there the same time that we were. Not a problem.

I will not go through all the details of our stay. Only some highlights that might be helpful. Most of the staff that we came across was incredibly nice. Did have some problems in the restaurants. We had very inconsistent food and service when returning to restaurants for the second time. Had to request bread 3 times at one restaurant. Difficult to get water or wine refills. Completely different steaks and sides than the first time. Dragons was good the first time, not the second. Food and service were NOT consistent. At all. We had been to Paradisus La Perla in Playa del Carmen earlier in the year and the food/restaurant service were FAR superior to Secrets the Vine. You could have basically whatever you wanted- not so much here.

Beach is nice and you can walk forever. Pools are pretty cramped. No room to spread out. They weren't heated when we were there and EVERYONE was complaining about how cold they were. I think they've rectified this with the exception of the preferred pool area. The preferred pool area at Paradisus La Perla was large with nicer beds/cabanas and more spread out. It wasn't much of an advantage for preferred status at this resort. Also, really missed the in-pool bars. We knew there wouldn't be any before going but this was the first resort we've ever been to that didn't offer it.

Probably our biggest disappointment about this resort was the wine. We chose this resort because we really like wine. We thought "the vine" would mean the wine options were better than most resorts. Especially the included ones. They weren't. And the wine list was ridiculously expensive and not good values. We attended the complimentary wine tasting and it was actually a tasting of the wines you would get for dinner each night. Pretty ridiculous, if you ask me.

This is a really modern resort with friendly staff and many options for dining. But I'd prefer to return to the mayan riviera area rather than Cancun. And I think there are much higher level resorts in terms of food, grounds, and consistent service. It's glitzy and on the surface, beautiful, but underneath, this isn't really 5*.

Room Tip: Preferred rooms are on higher floors so the view is better. Preferred status is worth it only if it...

Dear Vermonter2007,

We would like to thank you for your recent visit to Secrets The Vine Cancún, we appreciate you have taken the time to share your overview on your stay with us.

We are glad to know you found the size of your room convenient, that you had a smooth check in process and also to know our staff service was attentive and nice.

We truly regret to read about your experience at the restaurants we humbly apologize for this inconveniences, we will check the results of our auditions in early November and we will take the proper measures to avoid inconveniences to other guests.

Our guest’s comments are truly important for us as we take these as feedback in our constant commitment of improving our service levels, food & beverage.

We are also happy to announce wine tastings are no longer being done with wine of the house, but with special bottles selected by the Sommelier, two complementary tastings per day with two different bottles per tasting.

We hope to have another opportunity to host you and offer the highest standard facilities, food & beverage which distinguish our beautiful resort.

Sincerely yours,

We are currently here on our honeymoon and have been to Mexico previously and stayed at both Excellence Playa Mujeres and Excellence Riviera Maya. I will be brief the hotel visually inside and outside is gorgeous, minimalistic, modern and really stands out from the others however food is not the standard I would expect for a 5*, I would rate it a 3-4* based on this factor which really lets it down, it really needs to improve to step up to the other big chains.
I would recommend the Excellence to anyone coming here as I think it will take Secrets a while to level out the issues they have.
To reassure anyone coming here it is a nice resort but in comparison to our other trips doesn't match up depending on where you have stayed before, we are from the UK and the hotel seems to be catered to the Americans rather than Europeans which makes a big difference.
Noise - we have not had any problems with this, there is no construction and had no problems sleeping
Music - music by the pool is very quiet compared to some of reviews I had initially read so not sure where this information came from
Mirrors - I had a full length mirror in my room which they put in on my arrival, so ask if you need as I did and seemed to get
Rooms - we are staying in honeymoon suite and beautiful, haven't used bath yet, rain showers are amazing, wrap around balcony really nice. Have clever USB ports in bathroom so don't need apple charger can just put straight in through USB however when we have room service there is no chairs/tables to have the room service unless on go on balcony
Service - everyone very attentive but could be a bit more personal catering to the masses rather than trying to promote quality
I am here for another 10 days so if you want to ask any questions please feel free to comment.

First of all, this place is great. The food is wonderful, the service super, and the overall quality of the place is superb. Yet, being called The Vine, you would think that this is a wine mecca. They could do so much more with that theme and really make it a unique place to go.
Check-in was fine. The room (a junior suite) was huge and the balcony bigger! Everyone was very attentive and anything I asked for was there immediately. Restaurants:
Olio: excellent food, dining outside, was delightful
Nebbilio: Try the fetticini borganese--out of this world
Dragon: The sushi tempera was outstanding. The pad thai was good, not great. Sushi, sashimi and sake--to die for.
Bluefish Grille: Tasty. Go for the steaks.
Market Cafe: Incredible lunch buffet. Mexican entrees were different (in a good way). No Taco Bell here.
Sea Salt: Just had lunch there, but the onion rings and fish tacos were wonderful.
Room Service: Prompt and exactly as ordered with some additional little tidbits.
Downsides: Not a restaurant, but there were some things that need to be tweaked. The lighting is very hard to figure out. Push one button and all the lights go on, push another and some go out--not user friendly at all. Heard many people complain about that. If privacy is an issue, these rooms aren't the best. The balconies are all right next to each other, which really wasn't a problem. The rooms had no little corner or nook to go to and read or work on computer without waking a person in bed. There was no desk or really any area to do computer work. The airconditioner went out twice in a week. It got a bit warm in the room and if you open the sliding doors, it creates quite a whistle.
The prizes at bingo and other games were very bad. With a name that has vine in it, you would think that a bottle of wine could be a prize. Noooo, they give out plastic glasses and CDs from neighborhood bars. Come on!!!!
There was very little wine other than that on display. The sommelier was pretty much non-existent except at wine tastings. They should be having wine pairing dinners with sommeliers supervising. They should have a wine bar (piano bar excellent place for it) where they serve glasses of wine for minimal cost. They should have specials on wines of the day. (most bottles start at $30 and up--pretty high since their house wines are pretty good and free). There should be wine discussions in the afternoon or evening. Hey, it's The Vine!!!!!!
Lastly, I am in a wheelchair and was unable to get to the sports bar. There was a huge steep staircase going up and that was it. Being a new facility, you would think that they would account for that. Most of the other areas are accessible (you might have to take the long way, but you can get there. Bathrooms were very accessible. Beach was not (it usually isn't).
Overall, this is a great hotel (nor really a resort, but a hotel with everything). I would receommend it to others. I just wish that they do some more with the wine. Such a shame.

Room Tip: get the preferred club. The extra pool and grill and higher floor is worth it. However, I did see...

This review is a few weeks late… Just came back from Secrets The Vine after a five day long weekend for our anniversary. All we can say is WOW!!! We were not planning on saying here originally, but after a fiasco with another All Inclusive just a couple of weeks before we arrived, we decided to try it. We were there from Oct 18- Oct 22; we missed the grand opening by a week. From the moment we arrived until we left, we were treated like royalty.
We arrived from the airport via Amstar transportation (you’ll want to arrange this separately) and were greeted in the lobby first with cool towels, then as we entered, a glass of champagne. The bell hops take your luggage and you find them in your room once you check in. We chose the Preferred Level , which was worth every penny we paid; we were whisked up to the 21st floor where we were checked in and offered more champagne. The Concierge/Butlers are at your disposal; they are truly there to make your stay pleasant. The 21st floor is also where the preferred lounge is has light snacks and an open bar pretty much all day; you want some champagne with your OJ? You can get it. Say Hi to Ana, she was great.
We were taken to our room which coincidentally was also on the 21st floor. For our anniversary, the staff decorated our door with a huge “Happy Anniversary” banner across the doorway. We had a Jr. Suite which was huge, so much room, so bright and the balcony was enormous. We had spectacular views of the Sea, the Lagoon and almost all of Hotel Row from our floor.
Food: The food was to die for, which is uncommon at an all inclusive; we never had a bad meal. We atr in the Blue Water Grill, Nebbiolo and Dragons for dinner, all were incredible. We had room service dinner on our last evening and that two was amazing, and prompt; we had them set us up on the balcony for outdoor dining. We ate breakfast (more a brunch) at the Market Café, which had unlimited amounts of food for breakfast/lunch. For our anniversary we got a deluxe breakfast in bed, with omelets, mimosa’s and fresh fruits. Breakfast usually filled us up so we often skipped lunch, but did have a very nice lunch at the Sea Salt; try the shrimp tacos. At 1pm, there is a culinary parade around the pool area when all the chefs from all the restaurants come out and share some mini samples of what is on the menu for the night. If you do get hungry before dinner, there is a great barista in the main lobby which has little sandwiches which are great. On a side note, there is a dress code which the first night we were there , we did not follow. Rather than refuse service to us, we had to eat outside which was not a problem, but remember men must wear long pants. Also a good note, every day at 1PM there is wine tasting and pairing in the main lobby; we did not attend but some days seemed very popular; I was told there are two thousand wine bottles in their cellar.
Beach: Amazing, truly amazing. Never had a single problem getting a lounger at any time of day, nor an umbrella if you wanted one. The sands were pure white, and water was very warm. There are beach vendors all over, but they are very polite if you say no. The wait service on the beach was plentiful so you never had an endless wait if you wanted a drink or a snack. It only rained one day we were there and that was a hilarious scene with mobs of people running of the beach trying to carry their food, drinks, towels. Et al; it was clear twenty minutes later.
Pools: Didn’t spend a lot of time in the pools because when in Cancun, go to the beach. For you pool goers though, you won’t be disappointed. There are three pools in the main area and one on the twelfth floor for the preferred guests. The pool in the front right is the activities pool where they play basketball, water aerobics daily and have the entertainment staff always on hand. The Preferred pool is an infinity pool which overlooks the ocean, while the other side of the patio overlooks the lagoon.
Spa: You get some resort credit that is available to use at the spa. I highly recommend the Moon and Stars Couples Massage. It is done outside, on the beach under the Moon and stars. The spa staff takes great care of you including the process of you sauna, steam room, ice cold plunge pool (you are in less than 30 seconds) which helps because you then go into the hot tub immediately afterwards. After your massage , you are treated to some champagne and fresh fruit. My wife also got a manicure and pedicure which turned out great and priced competitively with your basic nail salons in the US.
Entertainment: The hotel is conveniently located next to the Hard Rock Hotel, so the first two nights we were there, we were treated to free concerts. We did go to the piano bar one night and they had an Elvis impersonator; he was great and the show was fun. If the concerts are not your thing, or you fear noise, don’t worry you don’t hear much once your balcony door is closed.
Hope on the bus right outside the hotel and you can go to the malls which are fairly close, but you’ll enjoy the bus.
The only negative I will mention is, that the hotel is new and the floors are hard wood throughout. They have a loud echo which you will hear under your room door should your neighbor be leaving with their luggage early in the morning. Otherwise , no issues.
My wife and I are frequent travelers and we look to relax on vacations; we had a wonderful restful and relaxing time wishing we stayed longer. We will definitely be back to Secrets, The Vine.

Room Tip: Go Preferred.. so worth the extra money

We stayed at STV from the 25th of November to the 2nd of December, in a junior suite Preferred Club.

We were received at the hotel in true 5 star fashion: glass of sparkling wine, hot towel to freshen up and someone took our luggage up to our room. Check-in was done privately on the 25th floor where our room was, away from the crowds of the main lobby!

THE ROOM: 2517: fantastic, exactly what you see on their Secrets pictures!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND: GET A ROOM WITH AN ODD NUMBER (ie 2511-2517-1815) because you'll get gorgeous sunsets every night! And try to get a room on the 14th floor or above, you'll be above the gym-spa-restaurants that are found on the 12th floor!

THE FOOD: Simply delicious: breakfast buffet is fresh and tasty with an abundance of choices from vegetarian to meat lover pallet. LUNCH: à la carte or mini buffet style by the beach, again great choices DINER: NEBIOLO was our favorite restaurant, DRAGON was very good given you don't expect amazing sushi in Cancun and the other 3 Olio Sea Salt & Med. restaurants were all very good.

THE HOUSE WINE: not bad, it's no Chateau Pétrus but i'll do! The Sauvignon Blanc (white) and Merlot (red) were our usual choices.

THE SITE: perhaps the best: we walked along the beach and took a jet ski tour of the area and the beach in front of Secrets is the best: long beach, very confortable, no rocks, easy swim spots and rocky waves!! BEWARE: service at the beach is SLOW so get your own things unless you don't mind waiting!

THE FACILITIES: GYM-SPA-STAFF: simply the best! Fantastic gym with staff present all the time, great SPA but prices are very expensive and overall the staff is friendly, genuine and curteous.

PREFERRED CLUB: UNLESS YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A ROOM ON THE HIGHER FLOORS NOT WORTH IT!!!!! If you have to pay for this upgrade don't bother: the real advantages are rooms situated on higher floors, a small lounge on the 21st floor which is pretty blan and a semi-private pool and bar area on the 12th, which transforms into olio restaurant...

ENTERTAINMENT STAFF: AWESOME!!!

WE WILL DEFINITELY COME BACK TO THIS HOTEL!!!

Room Tip: Get a room on the odd side: 2517 or 1911, it's the sunset side Pref. Club not worth the extra c...
