My office closed down the first weekend in May to head to Cancun for the weekend for an office FAM (familiarization) trip. Our wonderful Sandos rep graciously offered us a 2 night stay at the Sandos Cancun Luxury Resort. Here is an honest and open review of our stay.
Here is a concise review of my experience:
TRANSPORTATION-The resort is only a short 10-15 minute ride from the resort. We landed at 11:15 and we were at the resort by noon.
CHECK-IN-Upon entering the lobby it is evident that this is an olde resort but that a lot of work has been done to it to incorporate a modern feel. Check-in was quick and the staff was very friendly.
Our rooms were not quite ready so we were given our bracelets and told that we could go to lunch and start enjoying the grounds. While I do not like to stay at resorts in which you have to wear an armband/bracelet, this is typical in the Caribbean . . . especially in Cancun where the beaches are public beaches and the resorts are easily accessible to everyone.
GROUNDS-The main focus of the grounds is the 3 pools that are set at separate temperatures. They pretty much take up the entire outdoor space.
The beach is clean and beautiful.
ROOM-Our initial room did not have a balcony. We asked to be moved to a room with a balcony (not necessarily a better view but just some kind of outdoor space). We were moved to the 6th floor and our room had a view of the lagoon and the sea.
The rooms come with Bvlgari lotions (big plus!), robes, slippers, a separate tub and shower, and a private water closet. Our room also had a seating area. The refrigerator was stocked with water, beer, soft drinks, and a couple of snacks.
FOOD-The food choices are limited since there are only 4 restaurants. The food was good, though, and the service was excellent. Lobster was included.
BARS-I feel that this resort desperately needs a second bar. There are only 2 on property. I don't think they need it because of volume of people but more because of convenience. Bar One is located inside by the lobby. The other bar is down by the beach which means that you have to walk around all 3 pools to get to that bar. I also didn't like the fact that the beach bar/grill closes down at 6:00pm for an hour while they switch over to the dinner menu. So, if you are at the beach or still hanging at the pool, there is no bar other than Bar One for that hour.
ENTERTAINMENT-Cancun resorts are very different than Riviera Mayan resorts in that most Cancun resorts do not offer the over-the-top entertainment shows. These resorts realize that a lot of people take part in the nightlife in Cancun so they don't offer a whole lot in terms of night life.
Overall, I think that this is a nice resort but feel that it is a bit over-priced. The service is excellent. The rooms are the typical Cancun/hotel-style rooms, the upgraded lotions on the 6th floor are a huge plus, the beach and sea are beautiful, the night life is slow on the resort, the dining choices are limited.
I think that this resort would be good for a 2-3 night stay but I would not recommend this hotel for a full week.
