We returned yesterday (11/3/2009) from a 5 day /4 night stay at Moon Palace. There was 7 in our party (Wife+myself+3 daugthers+in-laws). We had an absolute blast. My wife and I stayed here 2 years ago for our 10th anniversary and also had a wonderful time. This trip was no different. Superb service, really good food (see dining tips below), awesome drinks and absolutely gorgeous facilities.
It's obvious that the economy has had an impact on all of Cancun. We arrived on a Friday afternoon and were told that there wa 20% occupancy. We stayed in Nizuk and literally had the entire pool, bar and beach area to ourselves. The place was dead. Despite the lack of patrons, the wait staff was awesome.
As the weekend progressed, occupancy appeared to increase, but the level of service remained high. I don't want to reiterate what's already written in previous positive reviews, so here are a few notes for those that may be travelling with children.
1) October is considered the 'wet season' in Cancun. Thus, be prepared for much mosquito's in the evening. Bring Bug Spray!!!
2) You really can't swim in the beach area of Nizuk or Sunrise. There is a lot of seaweed in the water. If you really want to swim in the ocean, book rooms at "Beach Palace" which is downtown Cancun. Same awesome service, but better beach. The beach at Moon Palace is just fine for laying out, playing beach soccer/volleyball and for kids to play in the sand.
3) Dining Tips: We loved the 'mexican' restaurant in Nizuk, the Italian restaurant at the golf course and the Caribbean spot at "The Grand". Avoid the Asian Restaurant (Bamboo) at the Golf course, as the service there was by far the worst and the food was lousy (all 7 dishes were not very good). This was the only disappointing aspect of the trip. When my wife and I visited in 2007, Bamboo was our favorite spot. We spoke with several other guests, and they were all disenchanted with the food and service at Bamboo..
4) As far as "child friendly" goes, Moon Palace is perfect. The kids area in Sunrise is perfect if you have children that range in age. (Our girls ages range from 3 to 9). Every restaurant has a kids menu. Actually, my girls found the room service food to be their favorite, especially the mini-cheeseburgers.
5) The drinks are plentiful and top shelf. You can find a bar anywhere. My only gripe about the bars is that the TV at each bar played the "Moon Palace" channel on repeat. Would have been nice to show sports, considering we were there on a Sunday where there was football on all day as well as the World Series.
We plan on going back to Cancun in 2 years, and will definitiely stay at the Moon Palace again.
