“Great Resort in Cancun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

Although this wasn't our first trip to Cancun, it was our first stay at the Casa Magna. We received a great deal through Vacations by Marriott. Our upgraded room was a Caribbean Suite and well worth it. Emmy and Israel were excellent receptionists, and, in fact, service at this resort was exceptional throughout our five-day stay. We went for relaxation and food. Pool service was quick; food was tasty; water was wet-- just our style. Red flags up all week on the beach. Had a few glitches, but all were handled well, which is the essence of service to me. Just don't understand why some people expect so much, when Cancun is for Chillin'. Yes, prices are expensive; breakfast buffet is expensive; but you won't go wrong here at the Casa Magna.

Room Tip: Corner Caribbean Suites are worth the upgrade.

I stayed at CasaMagna in March 2012. This is a beautiful hotel and I loved every day. Although the sports bar was too pricey for the food. Other that the food was great. Breakfast buffet was great!! This hotel is definitely one of the best in Cancun. It is near the quiet end on the strip, the beach is great. We had the biggest suite which was not huge, but spacious for 2 or 3 people but that its. The best was the wrap around balcony with its amazing view. I don't remember the room number but we were on the 6th floor and it was the last room all the way at the corner of the hall on the left. Room service always got our order right. Mainly breakfast was the only meal we ate at the hotel other than a few meals we ordered via room service. We went on several excursions so we did not select the all-inclusive. Purchase your excursions online before you go you will get better prices. The bed is what I love about Marriott the best. They always have an extremely comfortable bed. Do not use any of the water or drinks in the wet bar... too overpriced it's like paying $5-7.50 for a bottle of Fiji, which i did buy once because I was extremely thirsty. There is a 7-11 right across the street in walking distance 24 hrs get what you need from there. We caught the bus up and down the strip it was very cheap. Keep some dollars and pesos on you as it sometimes easier to negotiate when you have cash dollars when you go on excursions and you want to buy things. There is also a great seafood restaurant right across the street we ate there at night on the water it was beautiful..sorry I forgot the name, but it’s the only seafood place right across the street.

Room Tip: i would get the Caribbean Suites they are all at the end of the halls and have the wrap around balco...

This has been our second stay at this resort. We traveled here both times for a business trip and it has been fantastic both times! The property is very well kept and staffed. Everyone at the hotel is always friendly and genuine. The location is great and the beach is only okay. Don't get me wrong it is absolutely gorgeous, but it is very rough and choppy. The times that we have been here the red flags are always out and the waves are just pounding and relentless, so not ideal for swimming, maybe just wading, but don't go out to far. Also we have had the all inclusive package which is awesome! You can eat at all the restaurants and then two others at the J.W. ( Sedona grill and Gustavo's, which both are excellent!). The swimming pool is nice and they have a big hot tub. I'm not big on the whole hot tub thing, so can't tell you much. They have beach volleyball which is really fun! We love to play it and do so for hours! The rooms are nice, clean and spacious, housekeeping does a great job. The service has always been exceptional for us and staff members always go out of their way to please us, so I'm very happy with that! All in all I would definitely recommend this hotel and if you can afford, the all inclusive package. I look forward to coming back next year!

Great resort, great breakfast. Received a great rate and as a Gold MR member, got upgraded to an oceanview room. Can't complain.
Far away from the ugly, touristy area of Cancun... and we were very pleased by the International clientele and different from the usual redneck US crowd that used to drive us away from Cancun. Lots of Brazilians and Russians this time around.
Only suggestion is to provide more umbrellas and tables for the beachside loungers. Palapas are only available far away from the water.
Food at the pool restaurant was mediocre and expensive, and with great restaurants available a short drive/bus ride away, you really shouldn't eat there. Be aware that most Mexican restaurants don't really open for lunch until 1-1:30, so if you are an early luncher, you might get stuck with the pool restaurant as your only option... If so, I feel sorry for you. Fill up at the great buffet breakfast and enjoy the beach or pool until 1-2 and then go for lunch.
Thrifty car rental at the hotel is a ripoff... Try the friendly Avis office called Royal plaza that is 500m south of the hotel, which you can walk to or take the MX$8 bus to.

We got an excellent rate on this property at under $150/night + $200 Marriott bonus bucks for the timeframe as Spring Break was winding down. We stayed here 2 separate weekends. The first weekend I upgraded to ocean view for another $40/night. The second weekend we stayed in a standard resort view room. I would NOT use ocean view upgrade again as virtually all of the rooms are ocean view. As long as you're higher than the 3rd floor all of the rooms have great views. The only difference was our view was straight on the ocean vs. angled & the ocean view room had an extra closet & extra sink. The rooms themselves although not particularly roomy had comfortable beds, comfortable pillows, good A/C, were clean, & had more english language TV options than our previous resort. The nice thing about this resort is its connected to its much plusher JW Marriott next door via a walkway. The CasaMagna pool was decent but the JW pool was spectacular & they never hounded you about whether or not you were from the JW. This pool is massive with an infinity edge, multiple spas & well worth the walk next door. The beaches at both resorts were virtually the same & are excellent. The beaches have white crushed sand, very soft & cool. The water goes from clear to turquoise to blue with virtually no rocks at all in or out of the water. The staff also rakes up the very little seaweed & ocean debris in the mornings. We've been to numerous beaches & this beach ranks up with the best of the best. If you get there early in the day you can get a beach chair under the cabana & take advantage of some drink service on the beach & bill to your room. Overall, we thought this was an excellent property, with an excellent beach, good rooms, good service, & of course good drinks. I would highly recommend staying at this hotel vs the JW... its the best of both worlds at the lower price point.

Room Tip: Pass on the ocean view upgrade... all of the rooms have excellent views. Choose a room above the 3rd...

The resort is just beautiful and so picturesque. The beach front is outstanding and the towels are awesome... Note: the service for this Marriott is among the worse I have ever experienced, so dont go with any expectations for great service. Also, Do not ask for assistance about restaurants - we wanted to brunch at two highly ranked places and was told by the staff they were closed .. they would NOT even call... SO, just do not listen to the staff... The rooms are great and the views better..

Its a good place to stay -- just set your expectations...

Room Tip: The rooms are awesome... most have views

We just spent 6 nights at the Marriott CasaMagna in Cancun. We're huge fans of the CasaMagna in Puerto Vallarta, so we felt like we knew what to expect from this hotel in terms of style, service, room type. Our $159 a night room rate included the 4th night free, daily breakfast buffet for 2 adults and a $100 USD room credit toward food/beverages. Our hotel bill exactly matched what we were due to receive, there was no need to get adjustments of any kind from the front desk.

We had been contacted by the hotel concierge before arrival to set up our airport tranfer to the hotel. Their transportation vendor, Prestige, was waiting outside the airport (as we were instructed) for us. The experience was seamless, we were at the Marriott a short while later.

Due to my Gold status and as requested in my email to the concierge, we were upgraded from an ocean view room to an ocean front room on the top (6th) floor. The view was absolutely stunning, we spent so much more time on our balcony than we usually do at a hotel - but it was tough to tear ourselves away!

The breakfast buffet has an excellent assortment: fruits, pastries, Asian food, Mexican specialties, pancakes, waffles, and of course, eggs cooked to order. This meal literally filled us up for the whole day, we never ate again until dinner. A small suggestion for the Marriott: when the hotel is full (like it was on our last 2 days), there should be a second cook on the egg station. Please note that the tip (propina) is included in the price of the buffet. We often gave a bit extra anyway, but you do not have to. We did have one unpleasant experience from the hostess at breakfast. As mentioned, the hotel was very full due to a sales conference being held there, so while we were at the head of the line waiting to be seated we were skipped over for a table of four behind us. But meanwhile, we saw plenty of other "twos" sitting at tables for 4. It was a customer service moment that just was not handled well because until we questioned them about it, we didn't get any explanation - they just skipped us.

The pool and beach were the highlight of the trip. Plenty of chairs at both the pool and beach, although there are only a limited amount of umbrellas at the pool (maybe 6 total). However, there were a ton of palapas on the beach for shade. Since we are sun people, we didn't have any issues, but I did see some families scrambling to find shade for their kids. I had read some complaints on TA about the lifeguard being overzealous on the beach. We saw none of that during our stay. In the many many times we swam in the ocean, he only blew his whistle once at 2 guys that went very far out. I will say that the lounge chairs are kind of funky, they don't go all the way straight up or all the way flat. I found them to be quite comfortable, but my husband wasn't as happy with them (and we heard others around us mention the same issue.)

The servers poolside were excellent. While we never ordered food, we did get buckets of beers (if you buy 4 beers, you get 2 free! It came to about $4 USD per beer - no bargain, but not bad for a resort.) I did see people on the beach with their own coolers, etc. but to be honest we didn't feel like lugging coolers, ice, etc. ourselves. And since we got the $100 credit at the resort, a couple days of poolisde beverages were covered :-)

We did not try any other restaurants at the resort. At night, we wanted to get off the property and try other things. It was quite easy to catch the bus (8 pesos) at the bottom of the JW Marriott driveway each night. In the mornings, we took long walks toward the Westin Regina and airport. There is a beautiful public access beach that is a nice 4 mile round trip walk, although most days we did 6 to 7 miles. We had a lot of cervesas to wear off!

Our room was kept immaculately, although turndown service was a little spotty - I think we had it 4 out of 6 nights. We tipped our housekeeper each day. We never had a problem with getting towels, washclothes, toiletries, etc. We did have one housekeeping glitch, on our first day, as we walked into the room there was a large wet spot (with some gunk from the bathroom floor, ugh) in it that I managed to slip on. The bell captain was still there and cleaned it up himself. You could tell he was embarrased by what had happened - not a great first impression! But he handled the incident just fine.

All in all, we loved the CasaMagna and would easily stay here again. I highly recommend it. Yes, there were a couple of small incidents, but really so very minor. What a wonderful vacation we had!
