We just spent 6 nights at the Marriott CasaMagna in Cancun. We're huge fans of the CasaMagna in Puerto Vallarta, so we felt like we knew what to expect from this hotel in terms of style, service, room type. Our $159 a night room rate included the 4th night free, daily breakfast buffet for 2 adults and a $100 USD room credit toward food/beverages. Our hotel bill exactly matched what we were due to receive, there was no need to get adjustments of any kind from the front desk.
We had been contacted by the hotel concierge before arrival to set up our airport tranfer to the hotel. Their transportation vendor, Prestige, was waiting outside the airport (as we were instructed) for us. The experience was seamless, we were at the Marriott a short while later.
Due to my Gold status and as requested in my email to the concierge, we were upgraded from an ocean view room to an ocean front room on the top (6th) floor. The view was absolutely stunning, we spent so much more time on our balcony than we usually do at a hotel - but it was tough to tear ourselves away!
The breakfast buffet has an excellent assortment: fruits, pastries, Asian food, Mexican specialties, pancakes, waffles, and of course, eggs cooked to order. This meal literally filled us up for the whole day, we never ate again until dinner. A small suggestion for the Marriott: when the hotel is full (like it was on our last 2 days), there should be a second cook on the egg station. Please note that the tip (propina) is included in the price of the buffet. We often gave a bit extra anyway, but you do not have to. We did have one unpleasant experience from the hostess at breakfast. As mentioned, the hotel was very full due to a sales conference being held there, so while we were at the head of the line waiting to be seated we were skipped over for a table of four behind us. But meanwhile, we saw plenty of other "twos" sitting at tables for 4. It was a customer service moment that just was not handled well because until we questioned them about it, we didn't get any explanation - they just skipped us.
The pool and beach were the highlight of the trip. Plenty of chairs at both the pool and beach, although there are only a limited amount of umbrellas at the pool (maybe 6 total). However, there were a ton of palapas on the beach for shade. Since we are sun people, we didn't have any issues, but I did see some families scrambling to find shade for their kids. I had read some complaints on TA about the lifeguard being overzealous on the beach. We saw none of that during our stay. In the many many times we swam in the ocean, he only blew his whistle once at 2 guys that went very far out. I will say that the lounge chairs are kind of funky, they don't go all the way straight up or all the way flat. I found them to be quite comfortable, but my husband wasn't as happy with them (and we heard others around us mention the same issue.)
The servers poolside were excellent. While we never ordered food, we did get buckets of beers (if you buy 4 beers, you get 2 free! It came to about $4 USD per beer - no bargain, but not bad for a resort.) I did see people on the beach with their own coolers, etc. but to be honest we didn't feel like lugging coolers, ice, etc. ourselves. And since we got the $100 credit at the resort, a couple days of poolisde beverages were covered :-)
We did not try any other restaurants at the resort. At night, we wanted to get off the property and try other things. It was quite easy to catch the bus (8 pesos) at the bottom of the JW Marriott driveway each night. In the mornings, we took long walks toward the Westin Regina and airport. There is a beautiful public access beach that is a nice 4 mile round trip walk, although most days we did 6 to 7 miles. We had a lot of cervesas to wear off!
Our room was kept immaculately, although turndown service was a little spotty - I think we had it 4 out of 6 nights. We tipped our housekeeper each day. We never had a problem with getting towels, washclothes, toiletries, etc. We did have one housekeeping glitch, on our first day, as we walked into the room there was a large wet spot (with some gunk from the bathroom floor, ugh) in it that I managed to slip on. The bell captain was still there and cleaned it up himself. You could tell he was embarrased by what had happened - not a great first impression! But he handled the incident just fine.
All in all, we loved the CasaMagna and would easily stay here again. I highly recommend it. Yes, there were a couple of small incidents, but really so very minor. What a wonderful vacation we had!
