“Best Beach in Cancun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2013

Stayed four nights at the end of June. Property is lovely. Hotel was undergoing some regular maintenance that didn't detract from our experience (workers were redoing water feature outside of lobby). Our original room smelled of fresh paint, but no problem changing to a new one. It's great that they are keeping up the property. Rooms are very comfortable with good toiletries. Excellent beach view from the balcony. We enjoyed eating at the BeachWalk and Gustino restaurants as well as Mikado (at CasaMagna). Walked the whole beach and saw that Marriott has the best stretch of beach at the moment--softest sand, clearest water and best waves! Prices are reasonable for a resort of this quality. If money is an object, you can always take the bus to the Surfin' Burrito! We enjoyed our stay. We usually stay at all-inclusives in Cancun area but would definitely return here again. The quality was excellent for what we paid. Loved it!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

Just returned from our 5 days/4 nights stay, with a 6 yrs and 2 yrs old. Overall, this is a great hotel and I would give it a 4.5 star. The pools are excellent and extensive. Our room was a tad dated but very roomy, with a large bathroom, typical of higher star hotels. Pool service was great, especially our server Edgar. He was very attentive. Hotel is tranquil and relaxing, not for people seeking a party scene. Would definitely select JW over the Casa Magna.

Dining: We had buffet breakfast at Sedona Grill every morning, well worth it with a variety of options. The waiters were extremely helpful and provided excellent service. Lunch at the pool was on par for this category hotel, although could be better with some of the items. Seafood ceviche (we love ceviche) was good; all beef hot dog was good and huge, probably double the regular size; spaghetti for the kids was plain; grilled chicken breast for the kids was good; flank steak nachos was loaded and yummy; calamari should be passed, very thick cut and not too tasty; drinks were hit and miss. We tried the Mikado Japanese teppanyaki at Casa Magna for the kids. I would say this was not any different from many teppanyaki restaurants in the States or in Aruba, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, etc. Only difference would be the skill level of the chef throwing the tools around. Sasi Thai place tasted good and reminded me more of Thai fusion than traditional Thai food. It's interesting that some people complain about food pricing at the JW. This is a 4.5/5 star category hotel. Price comes with the territory. There's a McDonald's, Papa John's, and restaurants across the street for less. The prices are not any more unusual than any similar 4.5/5 star category hotels.
We also ate at Lorenzillo's Seafood restaurant one night, excellent fresh seafood. Would definitely recommend. We had 2kilos (4.4lbs) of live spiny lobster, cooked to order. I also tried the jumbo clams on half shells. My wife literally jumped out of her seat when her clams moved with drops of lemon. Kodak moment. lol.
We ventured to the Taco Factory near Daddy Os for some tacos. The pastor tacos were great.

ROOM: As mentioned earlier, spacious room with nice bathroom. Room service was a hit and miss. One time, they forgot our request for 1 hr, even after 3 phone calls so we left our room. One of our sinks lacked pressure and had to get fixed. Our TV was out for 24 hours (they said it was all the TVs?). 0.5 deduction for these minor inconveniences with this category hotel. Maids were very helpful. Overall, many service staff were very friendly and ready to assist.

Transportation: We got transportation through the hotel from the airport. Very convenient. Getting around for us was either by taxi or bus. I preferred the bus. Taxi from the JW was always with a Suburban or SUV. Bus was fun and didn't take long to arrive to the destination.

Money: Although USD was still accepted, why bother with the poor exchange rate at restaurants, hotels, and vendors? I got pesos out of Bank of Santander ATM at the airport or just pull some money out at a reputable bank ATM. Much better exchange rate. While buying a Happy Meal for my 2 yr old (she became picky from other foods), I witnessed a proclaimed "American" giving the cashier a hard time because she used USD and they couldn't convert it for her. She used very poor choice of words, more condescending choices. Be respectful when in other countries. Right?

Pool and Beach: Very nice! Thatched umbrellas at the pools and on the beach. We saw people reserving their favorite pool spots every morning, so we did as well. There were plenty of chairs and umbrellas but the "desirable" locations were always with "reservations" by guests. So I sadly admit that we joined the band wagon on this one. Although I could swear that the pool staff had "preferential incentives" with some guests to reserve the chairs.

This was my second time in the past 2 years at Cancun doing non-AI (first time was at Intercontinental Presidente for the wide beach). I definitely enjoy the quality and freedom of non-AI. My friends and other family like AI due to pure convenience. Overall, I would recommend JW Marriott and would definitely return here.

This hotel is very traditional and does not have a lot of personality. The "outstanding/aboave agerage" items are the pool area and the service. Personally I like the Casa Magna next door better because of its Hacienda style/theme. The pool areas are somewhat comparable. So is the beach.

There is definitely a big effort going on mostly in the lobby area to show upscale service. Outside that area I have a hard time noticing the difference. That does include the pool area. The fact that you have 10 guys idling all the time does not make it a better service. And why is there not a single female attendant anywhere in that area ? Room service is very good...but I am not too heavy on room service anyway. I tried the Sedona restaurant and was not impressed with the quality or value. The place is expensive -- that does include the gift shop. They have a club 91 all inclusive going.on..it did not make much sense to me and I did not sign up. Who want to go to the top floor for food and drinks ? bottom line..it feels more like an "executive" business type hotel than a fun and relaxing vacation resort to spend time with the family...to make it a fun place...they need to go next door to the Hard Rock Hotel...bottom-line they need to decide if they wanna be a cosmopolitan fun place or be geared towards their more conservative business clientel .One last thing..they have a few free things for Reward customers...amazing how backward that is implemented..every time you fill a coffee in the morning in the gift shop they create all kind of paperwork and write it off in their cash register/computer. so a free coffee - standard in all US Marriotts ( same for WIFI ) - suddenly becomes a transaction and bigger deal...the WIFI is 15 bucks per day , if you are not Platinum ( or gold ? )...how backwards is that?...5 bucks for 10 minutes in the business office..10 cents per printout...time travel to the nineties for free...

Room Tip: Avoid that thrifty , if you can....

Things started off a little rocky but things improved. Requested a early check in since our plane arrived early. After thinking we were checking in (by the actions on the front desk emoloyee) around 10:15 we were then told by the front desk your room was not ready but come back in a hour and a half. That was understandable since we got there early, even though I requested a early check in. So we came back a 1.5 hrs plus later then we were told it's still not ready and to come back 30 minutes later. Was not happy about that and the hotel appeared not to be full? Gold elite status got me nothing!
Pros- beautiful hotel, beautiful views especially from the high floors, concierge desk was outstanding always got us our desired restaurants. Buffet breakfast was wonderful, amazing service! Would recommend you get a pkg that includes the Buffet breakfast. Enjoyed the restaurants adjacent to the JW at the Marriott. Liked the Japanese restaurant Mikato and also like the Argentine steak house. Ask the JW concierge for discount coupons for those restaurants. Great pool, did not hang out at adult pool but it did look relaxing. Never saw the housekeeper at all but room was cleaned.
Opportunities for improvement/suggestions/advice - bring your suntan lotions/sun block. Gift shop charges $25-$35 a bottle. 7-11 across the street has lotion/sunblock much cheaper. Spent time in the lobby bar, every day I was there the same Bloomberg channel was on, very annoying. The channel never changed for days. When I was hanging out on occasions at the lobby bar itself by myself the staff barely spoke to me only when my glass was low the bartenders were then eager to speak to me. They were just not engaging Imho. However, when the lobby bar mgrs came by they were always engaging and
friendly. Spent $50 each way plus tip using the hotel transportation booked it with hotel. The hotel transportation was a regular older dated white van. The hotel should invest in classier transportation especially at those rates for a 20min ride. The drivers were nice safe drivers no issues. Overall, I would go back to this property and would recommend this JW!

Room Tip: Ask for a high level room.

A luxurious hotel at the best location on Cancun!
You can find anything you need, pools, restaurants, shops, service. Nicely decorated interior, large rooms equiped with everything you may need, facing only the Caribbean fully or partially.
try the sanwitches, salads and ice cream of the shop with the souvenirs.

Room Tip: High floors for better view.

I am never coming back to JWM not because I am sleepless at 4AM in a $400 / night suite with a loud drip from a leaky roof but because of a night shift lobby manager who treated me like a nuisance marring his otherwise smooth day (night) at the JWM front desk. I have stayed at JWM Orlando and JWM San Antonio with no issues but this is a disgrace to a hotel carrying the JW initials.. I am sorry for this review.
