“Nice luxury hotel, great location, missing activities”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013 via mobile

The hotel was comfortable, spacious rooms, breathtaking views, nice pool and beach area, hospitable staff. But I would have liked to have seen more info on restaurants available, their hours and dress codes. Also, poolside food & drink service closes too early. Way before the sun goes down they shut down service and we still wanted to lounge in the pool area with food service. There should be more to do at the hotel. The hard rock next door was welcoming and offered more restaurants and music and activities. Basically it had much more life than the JW

The JW Marriott in Cancun, Mexico is one of the finest resort hotels my wife and I have ever experienced. We are both experienced travelers and loved the choice of dining experiences, hotel amenities, great pool and beach access, very friendly staff -- you name it. It was our best stay in Mexico ever!

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor, beach view room. The mornings and sunsets on the veranda/balcony were superb

We have never been to Cancun and when looking for a place, I read reviews for over 100 resorts. I am a Platinum Marriott, so after reading reviews of the JW Marriott Cancun, I figured this was a safe bet. I got it right. We were there the second week of June with two children, 9 & 11. We chose Club 91 and we would do that all over again.

I want to start by letting people know that this is not Super 8. Marriott has their business and budget hotels, extended stay hotels, then the full service Marriott and Renaissance which have restaurants and bars. From there it goes up to the JW brand which is full service with some type of fine dining available and usually a spa. After that is the Ritz which is the Ritz. I say all of this because if you plan on going to the JW Marriott in Cancun, you should expect to pay alot. Everything is going to be expensive. How people are surprised at the prices is beyond me.

This particular JW is every bit as nice as the JW in Orlando, without the lazy river but with an unbelievable beach, That makes it better in my opinion. It is much better than the Miami JW, but that is because the Miami hotel is business.

Club 91: This is a must for the traveler that likes to eat whenever they want. But it isn't really all about food. We were picked up right after we landed and transported to the hotel. The bellboy promptly grabbed our bags, we were given cold towels to refresh, and then a private escort to Club 91 level. For the fist time in over 500 nights at Marriott I was offered something like never before. A selection of four different types of pillows. You can choose whichever one you want at no charge. From there on it was awesome. The ladies and gentlemen of Club 91 are top notch. As the week went on, they helped with tours, dinner reservations and recommendations for things to do. When our flight was canceled they did everything they could to accommodate us. After 7 nights there, we felt like we were leaving our friends.

The Spa: The most beautiful spa I have been in. Multi-level with a huge spa area, and indoor lap pool and large variety of workout equipment. Plus the view was awesome. The massage was the best ever!

The Pool: Awesome free form pool that goes for ever. Then leads to an infinity edge that is just a great place to chill and forget about everything. Pool service was great. There were always guys around to get drinks, towels, or food. Yes it is expensive, but with Club 91, we would just grab a few sodas or waters from there and head to the pool. The food was mediocre. Grouper sandwich was small, kid's steak just plain bad. The salads were good and they had the best chicken tenders ever.

Dining: They have many dining options and with Club 91 you get to try them all at the Club, but we went to a few while we were there. La Capilla steak was incredible. Fransisco and Fausto our servers were the best in the business. Filet and chateaubriand were perfect. On the flip side, we went to Champions sports bar and it was quite possibly the four worst meals we have ever had. All at the same time. The spinach dip was inedible, wings looked like they were microwaved, cheese sticks cold and then it got worse from there. The lobby bar had great sliders and flat breads, but the service was weak.

We were there as a family and there were lots of kids. However, make no mistake, this is not a resort that has loads of kids activities. They don't market themselves as that and they aren't. It is a great place for kids if they like playing in the pool and on the beach.

Staff: Always had a smile, always willing to help. The difference from JW and Ritz is they are both willing to help, but the Ritz doesn't miss a beat. If you need someone to press the elevator button they appear out of nowhere.

If you chose JW Marriott Cancun, you won't be disappointed, especially with Club 91. It is first class and just a great property. They were doing some maintenance but that didn't bother us. It probably bothers people who complain they are doing maintenance, then say the facility needs updating...

Thanks JW for making this one of the most memorable vacations ever!!!

Room Tip: Even rooms overlook the adult pool, odd overlook the main pool. I wanted an odd # room but they did...

Just got back from a long weekend in Cancun. Before making hotel reservations had to check out what travelers had to say about hotels on trip advisor of course. We opted to stay at J W Marriott since it was one of the few places that wasn't an all inclusive resort.(we like to try local restaurants and not eat all our meals at hotel, though we did get the breakfast buffet included with our room rate and it was great) I'm glad we opted to stay at Marriott....the hotel is nice and well maintained...our view of ocean and hotel pools was beautiful....and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a great time and are looking forward to going back!

We stayed here approximately 10 years ago, and again for spring break 2013. It was just my husband and my teenage daughter and myself. We had a room with two beds, no kitchen, etc. We are used to having separate bedrooms, etc. but since it was just us we figured it would be ok. We missed having a full on sitting area, etc. besides just a small chaise lounge that we had. But we loved the beds and the rooms. The beds were not as large as we like either but we made it work.

We opted to do the club 91 when we arrived. The food was really going good, however we did grow tired of having to eat there, etc. each day. The bartender in club 91 was great! We loved him. It wasn't a very large club, but we usually had a table or just waited for just a bit. We ended up opting out of the club the last few days of our stay so we could venture out more. That is the one thing when you do an all inclusive or one of these club things you sort of feel "tied" to it because it is rather pricey.

The pool was beautiful. Had a great time hanging out there. As usual, people saved all of the chairs each morning and many never showed up. I would just ask one of the gentleman working the area and they would take towels off and make room. I loved that! if people are not there for a period of time then it is only fair. They said it is first come first serve and I totally agree.

We did spend a lot of time at the resort this time. It was one of those relaxing type vacations. We had room service a few times. Food was great and prompt service. Price was fair.

We did use a taxi a few times as well and the bell boys got them there and always were timely. We felt safe as the resort checks them all in and out for our security. Loved that.

Checking in and checking out was a little tedious. We didn't like the room we originally were in as it was very low and far inside so there wasn't much of a view. We are Marriott Vacation Club owners several times over and also marriott rewards users as well. We are "gold" members and feel that that should warrant a nice room and for some reason we always get shorted unless we push for something better. We pushed and were given a better room. That took some time but it all worked out in the end.

We would defintely stay here again. we do feel that with the economic changes service in resorts at many places not just mexico have slipped some. Years ago we felt we had much better service however it was not bad just not excellent.

Room Tip: Of course higher up and towards the end are the best rooms. Ours was overlooking the beach! We love...

Staff are very friendly and attentive. Rooms are great and they all have great views. The pool is awesome, if you can't or don't want to go in the ocean.

This property is both romantic and kid friendly. The restaurants, although pricey are very good. The breakfast buffet was one of the best I've had. It was a combination of American and Mexican cuisine with some Asian touches. The chilaquiles and churros were my favorite as were the various juices (papaya, guava, watermelon, fresh oj and of course pineapple)

We traveled to this resort in June 2013 with our two young boys aged 3 and 5. We booked into a Grand Ocean Club Suite on the club 91 level and were very satisfied with our experience.

Club 91: The club itself is located on the 14th floor of the resort but the 12th and 14th floors are considered the club level. The staff in the club were very kind, hospitable and always made an effort to great us by name. They all spoke English and were very helpful with anything we needed. The main draw is the food, which we felt was very good to excellent. To be sure, the food is definitely more suited for an adult palate but there were several good options for our kids. Breakfast always had eggs, bacon, sausage and either pancakes or french toast. There was also cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, and some pastries. Lunch was a mix of wraps, sandwiches, fruits, salads, cheeses and of course, desserts! The pre-dinner snack was usually wonderful with fresh guacamole, homemade salsa, chips, shrimp cocktail, cheeses, breads and ceviche. Dinner was usually excellent and is catered by one of the 7 restaurants on the property. A typical dinner included steak, chicken, fish, pasta (not everything every night) soup, salad, cheese, fruit, bread, and desserts. Alcoholic beverages are served from 6 - 10 PM (open bar). The "5th food presentation" is a little misleading because it's just the desserts left over from dinner, but still good! Club 91 guests also get access to the health club which is very nice and expensive if you pay by the day.

The room: The room was outstanding, very clean and in good condition. Our suite was oceanfront with two balconies, one off of the master bedroom (smaller) and one off of the living area (large with 4 comfortable chairs and a large round table). There was a wet bar, but no kitchenette and the only fridge was the mini bar (we called and asked for another but were told they were "all out"). The pull-out couch was adequate for the two boys and the living space was more than enough. No complaints about the room.

The resort: Beautiful from top to bottom. The pool was amazing, very large and meandering with lots of quieter spots for couples and adults and open areas suitable for kids play. There are a wealth of chairs (never a problem getting one) and two hot tubs. Pool service is prompt and the waiters are very attentive. The food and drink is really pricy ($12 drinks, $15+ cheeseburgers). The beach is wonderful with lots of chairs, lots of shade and great sand -- not rocky at all. The waves were big and the current strong, so be careful in the water. There is a lifeguard there who was very involved and actively "guarding" the guests.

Overall -- Excellent resort, would definitely stay there again. I feel we absolutely got our money's worth by paying the extra nightly rate for club 91. Service was outstanding, location was great. A very memorable week and the kids had a blast!

Room Tip: Pay for club 91 if you are planning on eating your meals at the resort. You will probably pay more...
