“Great resort for the price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2013

My boyfriend and I had reservations to stay at Royal Solaris Cancun in early November, 2013. We arrived there and were pleasantly surprised when they upgraded us (for free) to the GR Caribe which is their sister hotel (right next door). We were told that if you stay at Royal Solaris you do not have access to the amenities at GR Caribe, but if you stay at GR Caribe, you have access to both resorts which was nice since we had access to 6 restaurants instead of just 3.

Our room was very nice, clean and spacious. There was a bit of a odor when we first arrived (maybe similar to the smell of anomia?) but after being there a short while I didn't notice the smell any longer and it was never an issue.

The pools were very nice and refreshing. All of the employees treat are very friendly and make sure you always have what you need. At the Royal Solaris they had games out by the pool each day and lots of music playing. Was a very fun atmosphere. At GR Caribe it was a more relaxed and quiet setting. Mostly older people but it was still very nice.

I stayed at Royal Solaris in 2009 and remembered the food not really being all that good but I figured what do you expect for such a low price. However, this time we ate at Los Fuentes (in Royal Solaris) for dinner one night and it wasn't the best, but there were a few items on the buffet that were very tasty so we were quite satisfied. We ate for breakfast every morning except one at Cafe Solaris (in GR Caribe) and they had a very nice buffet of breakfast foods and a person making omlets, fried eggs, waffles and pancakes, which were all good.

At lunchtime we would just get the snacks out by the pool. The snacks were pretty good. Burgers, hot dogs, chips & cheese, chicken wings, etc. But we discovered this year they had added a brick oven pizza place and the pizzas we got there were fabulous! I ate one almost every day for lunch and they were really quite amazing.

For dinner the other nights we ate at Venetos and Bogavante and both these restaurants were very good. At Venetos we had fish and chicken and also a cheese ravioli dish and all were very good. At Bogavante we had steaks, baked potatoes, potato & leak soup and also lobster bisque and it was all amazing. Very surprised the steaks were so awesome.

We also used the paddle boats over at the marina (free) and those were enjoyable. Also attended 2 of the shows that they put on at the Royal Solaris and those were quite enjoyable and entertaining.

But overall we had a very good experience and I would definitely return to GR Caribe in the future.

I really can't think of anything that I would suggest that needs to change except that the shower only has a half a shower door and when I would shower I would make a little bit of a mess in the bathroom floor. Not a huge deal though because I just wiped up the water with a towel.

But overall, a very nice resort, very friendly and willing to please employees and a fun time.

Have stayed at 3 of the 4 Solaris hotels...all great. This one, although older, has been recently updated in a ' Moroccan' style, with arched wood doorways and cut metal fixtures. This is smaller and more intimate, not many children, ideal for couples. Attached to the Royal Solaris, you are free to enjoy all the pools and restaurants at both. Fun shows many nights and reasonably priced excursions for the adventuresome....prepare to gain a few pounds.

Room Tip: opt for the oceanfront terrace.

This hotel is at the lower end of Cancun's Hotel Zone, meaning it is very close to the airport, but a little distance to travel "Downtown". first thing to say about Cancun is that the currency they use, and seem to prefer, is the US Dollar. Most prices are listed as US$, I brought Mexican Pesos, and it was a right pain to ask for the price quoted to be stated as Pesos. It does your head in, as you would be aware of the conversion rate for the Pesos, but not too familiar with the rate for US$! Anyway, the hotel is situated right beside a bus stop, with the fare of 9.50 Pesos, anywhere. On a couple of occasions I handed the bus driver 10 Pesos, but got no change. It wasn't the money, it was the principle.
The hotel shares all the facilities with the sister hotel right next door, there are about 8 eating establishments between them. The Venetto and Marco Polo have a dress code = no shorts or sandals for the gents, casual elegant for all. Not in itself a problem, but, gents, make sure you pack a long pair of trousers. Food in both restaurants was quite good, with a good selection from each of the 4 courses offered. As this is an all-inclusive hotel, there was of course wine or beer available, always ready to be supplied by attentive and friendly waiters. For breakfast, I preferred the smaller, but more intimate, restaurant in this hotel, rather than the bigger, more varied food choice in the hotel next door. personal choice. Waiting staff always greeted you with a smile. Snacks were available by the poolside, from 12.00 midday, again, a nice selection.
There was a waiter on the beach, who would bring your selected drink, and patrolled the beach quite well. I spent most of my time on the beach, as I prefer it to hotel pools generally. there are a number of pools available, and young children are catered for as well, with their own shallow end. However, be careful with your young children in the smaller pool, as there was only a very low wall separating this pool from the larger one. There are 3 Jacuzzis between the hotels, which are similar to Jacuzzis all over the world.
My bedroom was on the ground floor, with a sea view from the side window. The rooms themselves are quite spacious, with a suitably stocked mini fridge, again all part of the all-inclusive deal. A nice touch was the coffee, real filtered coffee as distinct from the usual sachet type coffee.
The bathroom was also spacious, plenty of towels and amenities provided. Another nice touch was a mouth-wash.
The bar in the evening was always busy, again a good selection of drinks available, cocktails, beers, wine all freely available.
I attended 2 shows in the neighbouring hotel, quite good presentations, if you ignore the obvious miming.
There are plenty of opportunities to spend your money on tours, trips etc. I went downtown to book a trip to Chichen Itsa, (see other review) for less that 50% of the listed hotel price. I was advised, though, that all these tours advertised downtown may not be 100% genuine. Not sure if it was a sales gimmick by the hotel encouraging you to buy from them or not. Saying this, my tour did not arrive on the selected day, apparently they could not locate the hotel!! However, the very friendly concierge rang up, and the tour was rearranged for the next day. Next day, the tour was late, and I thought that my deposit was lost. However, the tour bus went to the wrong hotel, but eventually arrived 20 minutes later. My tip, only pay a deposit, pay the remainder on the bus.
The hotel is a little bit older than it's next-door sister, but in my opinion has more charm.
Overall, a very lovely hotel, but be aware of timeshare presentations, even in the hotel. I am not saying anything bad about timeshares, it's just that they are not for me.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea-view room.

We stayed at GR Caribe in 2012 after buying a groupon. We enjoyed our stay and thought it was a great value at the groupon rate. Food is okay, drinks are always flowing and yummy and a really relaxing atmosphere. We booked a few excursions through the desk and they didn't disappoint. Go to Isla Mujeres with the all-inclusive and we enjoyed the jet boat tour also. Don't bother going to the neighboring resort next door that you get access to. The food is nasty over there and the pool is fun but there were tons of people over there so we preferred the peace and comfort of GR Caribe.

Room Tip: try to get a room that isn't near the lobby because the noise carries from the 24/7 bar.

We stayed at GR Caribe by Solaris for 10 days in October 2013. We have visited all four of their resorts (1 in Los Cabos, 3 in Cancun). This was our first stay at GR Caribe and we liked it ALOT! This is an older property but it was recently renovated. It's not the latest and greatest, but it's very comfortable. What it lacks in features, the staff makes up in service. SERVICE is what this property does best.
We are completely familiar with their program, but found ourselves having to ask which restaurants were open the following day and which ones required reservations. Dress code did not appear be rigid, though. If in doubt, ask! The staff is always courteous and helpful. If they don't understand your request, they will find someone who does.
We will definitely return to Cancun & GR Caribe!

Room Tip: Our ocean view room on the third floor was comfortable and quiet.

The GR Caribe was the perfect place for my new husband and I to spend a week away together. This intimate, boutique-esque resort has a cozy yet exotic feel, with lounge music coming over the sound system, live evening saxophone, and an easy going, attentive staff.

GR Caribe also gives you access to its neighbor resort - the Solaris - that is where the party is at! More restaurants, pools, shows, and activities for families. But Solaris guests CANNOT come over the Caribe, which gives you the best of both worlds.

The hotel is located between the ocean, and a lagoon. There is a constant and cooling breeze that keeps the humidity down, even during August!

Use the $0.80 busline out front the hotel to get everywhere you need to go. Visit the chichen itza pyramids, learn to scuba dive in one day, hit downtown Cancun, and snorkel in underground rivers - the amazing tour staff on site can help you do it all!

My advice - hit all the restaurants at both hotels in as few days as possible and find your favourite. If you have an awesome waiter/waitress, tip very well the first night, and request them everytime you go to eat. You will be in for treats all week! Desserts and flaming coffee prepared right at our table!

We Love GR Caribe!

This was our second time coming here. Last year when we came everything was perfect! this time the reason that i would give 4 stars was because of a few things. Since we walked into our room, the entrance light was out which made it really dark to see into our closet and shelving. we asked 3 days in a row to have it changed and they never changed it and we stayed there 6 days. Also their internet is HORRIBLE! way too slow! i couldnt do any work and only a few main pages worked but that was it. i called tech support a few times but that didnt help either. i had to cancel it after a day of torturing myself by trying to make it work. We were having issues with our taxi and we asked a few staff members for help and they just kept sending us to the next person and that person said we need to talk to another person and back and forth. in the end it finally got worked out. But in the end everything else was wonderful so i cant grade it down lower than 4. The food staff is amazing and all the servers were wonderful! Especially Misael who would be sweating by walking along the beach and bringing us drinks and food from the bar. 5 stars to him! he was friendly, nice, and would help us a few times during his morning shift. The resort was getting ready for the next season but that didnt interfere with how nicely it looked. beautiful and clean! Been here twice, definitely would come back and always recommend this place to friends. the waters were clean and clear (besides after storms but then it clears up after a day). beautiful sunsets and nice lounge/beach chairs
