“First Timer”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2012

This was our first time at a Royal property. Although I understand memberships terminate in 2013 they continue to maintain the property in "top notch" condition. The staff is friendly and helpful. Had a great time. Only downside is traffic through the hotel zone getting into Cancun. Yet buses are frequent and inexpensive.

Request the Royal Cancun even though it is older they are a hundred times better. We have come almost every year to the royal resorts and have always enjoyed our stay here however this time we did not like the Royal Mayan very much. In my opinion since their memberships are expiring pretty soon they are not putting as much effort in keeping up with the reort upkeep. The use of the laundry was also better at the Royal Cancun. I feel that with as much as members are charge for maintenance fees the use of the Gym should be available as a complimentary ammenity to whoever is staying at the resorts. My wife use the Spa in the Sands and she saus it is very good. It was great to have free WiFi available.

A very pleasant surprise and a wonderful place for large families or groups of friends to vacation affordably. Cancun's beaches are beautiful, though in November, we found the surf a little high and warning flags were up for every day of our 8 day stay. It also meant that the winds brought cloud cover in every afternoon about 2 pm. So plan on getting your sunshine in the mornings. If you are into water sports and don't have small children that want to swim in the ocean, this spot is fine. The pools are great! The sand is great too. We checked in on a Friday and found the resort mainly populated with seniors. Don't let this fool you! Most people check-in on Saturdays. The seniors that we met are often there for extended stays, so they appear to be majority of the guests during the change-over each week. By Sunday, the resort had groups of all ages plainly in sight. If you are able (as we were) to get a room just overlooking the beach, you will find it difficult to believe your bargain. The ocean view rooms allow you the sounds of the surf, plus a view of sunrise and the beautiful turquoise waters. You will be treated to a roomy apartment with kitchen and stove plus a fridge that you can fill for yourself. Each room has an adjoining apartment if you are two families or groups and there are 2 pull-down beds, a couch and a king-sized bed in many rooms. Add the room next door and you can likely handle 10 or 12 people. (the pull-down beds are not recommended for large adults though).
Take lots of small bills with you. Currency is not easy to get and the resort suggest tips for every service offered. The bar prices are such that most guests only drink during Happy Hour (3-5). We found that if we dined at the resort for two meals each day, (2 adults and a child), we spent roughly $30 to $40 a day in tips for everything.

There are 2 restaurants within the grounds of this resort and 5 within easy walking distance.
We never tried the Conquistador Steak house during our stay. The prices were in line with steakhouse prices elsewhere in Canada or the US, plus the mention of a surcharge for beef on the display menu seemed a little confusing. With so many other options, we just kept trying other spots. The Palapa Restaurant by the pool was the best place for breakfast lunch and often dinner, but we realized that it was far more affordable for the early meals to shop at the grocery at the resort and make our own breakfast and lunch. The store was amazing with wines, liquors, tequila and a great variety of Mexican beers. The produce was varied and fresh, plus they made their own salsa and guacamole to sell. The meat selection was not large, but you could certainly find enough choices to cook your own suppers if you wanted.
Theme nights were huge at the resort, and the Mexican Fiesta was a far better dinner and show than we found at the Dreams Resort in Peurto Morelas (Dreams Cancun Riviera). The show featured professional dancers performing dances from all around the different states of Mexico and a little history with a nod to the Mayans included. Taco night featured some great Mexican food and we found some fantastic local flavors that we had not found in any other stays in Mexico. Much better than even the regular menu at the same resort.

Free shuttles run to other Royal Resorts and affiliated restaurants each hour and each of those are an easy walk to other restaurants and sites of interest for shopping or recreation.
The Cancun buses are clean, fast and cheap and appeared very safe as well. Roughly a dollar got you most places that you might want to go in the hotel zone without delay or confusion.
The resort shares beach and restaurants with Make no bones about it, the Royal Mayan in Cancun is a part of the Royal Resorts chain of hotels, and a "time share" property, BUT we found that there was less effort put on sales here than in other regular hotels that we've stayed in. I was really surprised by that - but it is true.
They did assign a guest concierge to us, and he did invite us to a presentation, but there was no pressure to go and they were very happy to let the experience in the resort do the talking for them. Very refreshing. There is a laundry room to do your own or you can pay the laundry attendant to do it while you go and enjoy your day.
From other guests that we met, the story goes that next year the hotel will be sold after a long run with the chain. Apparently they do this so that hotels regularly get refurbished, or rebuilt.Despite her age being more than 20 years, she is still a modern comfortable resort.
If you are hoping to go on vacation with a large family, I'd highly recommend this resort!
If you are traveling as a couple, I don't think that you will see any more savings than you'd get from an all-inclusive, but for families with 2 or more children, this is the very best way to see Cancun.

Room Tip: Try to get your room low and near the beach.

This property is really nice. location wise, it is bit further out from the restaurants but it is still on the beach, the pool is great and ofcourse our view from our suite was excellent. We had a huge balcony so eating out was a lot of fun. The resort has 2 sister properties (Royal Carribean and Royal Islander)attached to it so you can visit that as well and use anything out there as well. Royal Mayan is nicer but Royal Carribean had more activities. We only went to Royal Carribean as all the kid activities were handled there. This resort was unique because they had a lot of activities for kids and adults (e.g. Zumba and yoga) and mostly free. Each of the 3 resorts had a grocery store, Royal Carribean had a pharmacy and a doctor which we happened to use. The doctor was a really nice lady and was taking calls from us through the night.Calls are free but she charged for visit which was reasonable. There is also another pharmacy and an Oxo (like our 7 11) across the street from Royal Mayan. They do not advertise that they rent free bikes with gear, snorkeling gear, and kayaks or canoes. They also have a machine to pump your floats and have life jackets as well. Actually one of the few resorts where we paid only for food and drinks, a lot of fun stuff was free.

The staff was friendly and always wished ola and the manager was nice enough to talk to us when he learned that our kids were a little under the weather. Overall fabulous.

Room Tip: Our rooms was an ocean view but the rooms in the middle of the resort have the full ocean view like...

Jose Gonzales, who works at the Reception Desk at the Royal Mayan, does an extremely effective job in all phases. Not only does he process incoming and outgoing clients as well as the other standard job-related requests much quicker than anyone else on the Desk, he also is able to 'think-outside-the-box' when non-standard requests are posed. When ever we need help with a 'non-standard' request, we wait our turn, i.e., let others go ahead of us, until Jose finishes with his current client and then tell him want we want to do. Sometimes he asks a few pointed questions in order to determine our ultimate objective, before providing alternatives that will get us what we really want [and need]. Most employees on the Desk just provide a 'stock' answer without determining what the requester really needs. Jose's help has enriched our experiences in Cancun. Jose is 'Top-Notch' !

Room Tip: Restaurants at the royal resorts are over priced and, therefore, under utilized. Very frequently the...

I like the Royal Resort Chains, they are the only ones I stay at when I come to Cancun every year. This was my frist at the Royal Mayan. It was a really nice and clean resort with friendly staff. The TV's in the living rooms are a bit out dated and very small screen but the bedroom TV's seem to have been updated to flat screen. Overall A good stay.

My wife and I stayed here for part 2 of our honeymoon, and the hotel did not disappoint. We received a complimentary upgrade (thanks to Willberth the property manager) and the staff was exceedingly pleasant and friendly. The resort itself is wonderful with spectacular ocean views. They have a poolside bar and restaurants which serves great food and fresh juice. You get a 10% discount at Captain's Cove across the street as well!

The only minor criticism I would have of the property is that, being a timeshare property, they have a Saturday-to-Saturday schedule, so they move their guests to different rooms on Saturday. We were initially a little unsettled by this, but the bellhop was prompt, and they relocated us to a room a floor below which was equally nice, so no complaints. However, it would have been good to know this ahead of the trip so we could've planned the itinerary accordingly.

All in all, I can totally see why this property won the TA 2012 award. Would definitely visit again and recommend to anyone wishing to stay in the hotel zone in Cancun.

Room Tip: If booking through Expedia, be careful of the room descriptions - a 'junior suite' is not a...
