5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2014

This was my first trip to Cancun. The whole experience was far beyond my expectations. The accommodations were great and the staff was so attentive to me. I am handicapped and required a wheelchair which they graciously allowed me to use. The maid service was excellent. The entire week that we were there, they were continually manicuring the property...very impressive. The food was good as were the servers. Check out went very smoothly. Hopefully we will be able to come back next year.

The resort is very well maintained and very beautiful. The staff is nice and helpful. It shares amenities with neighboring Royal resorts which makes it nice to be able to try something different. If you have a kitchen in your suite it makes it nice to be able to cook for yourself when you don't feel like going out. There is a market on site that has a pretty good selection, if you go next door to the Royal Caribbean market, they seem to have a bit more. There is a Museum of the Maya in Cancun in front of the resort, definitely see that. The only thing bad that I can say is not at all the fault of the resort, it's the bus, I never could figure out how to get off of the thing. If you hit the stop button, the driver might stop, but probably not, your best bet is to yell at the driver which I think would up your odds of stopping to about 30%.

First time in Cancun and cant.eturn! The resort was meticulously maintained and the beach was fantastic. All employees that we encountered were friendly and helpful.
The 2 bedroom suite we had was clean and good size for the 2 couples. Lots of activities available if you choose or just relax at the beautiful pool area or beach.
Store is a bit pricey but so convinient you dont mind paying a little more. Dont waste money going to Isla Mujeres....dumpy and lousy beach...not worth aggravation. Also if you go to Market 28 - be prepared to be harassed constantly by shop owners attempting to sell you overpriced souvenirs.
just relax at the resort...you wont regret it!

The rooms are ok, not a Marriott that is for sure. They put us next to a room that they were doing construction in, horrible noise all day from morning to evening. They actually charge $8.00 per day to use a sorta gym, not very nice at all. We have never paid for use of a gym at any of our Marriott resorts nor at our Villa de Palmar resorts. Come to think of it I have never paid to use a gym in a hotel. Staff is less than gracious, basically they could care less about you. We will never stay at one of this groups resorts again.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking time to post about our resort.

We are very sorry for the annoyance that the noise from the maintenance work underway in the room next door to yours caused during your stay. Our Guest Services Manager has been trying to contact you in your room without success. In a situation when we receive a report like this, moving guests to another room is normally the first option. However, as you may expect, this is only possible if there are rooms available.

We understand that each resort has its own policies regarding access to the gym and it is very important for us that our guests are informed about the rules in effect at The Royal Islander and The Royal Caribbean. The gym fee should be mentioned in your exchange confirmation. We offer our sincere apologies for this misunderstanding and we are reviewing the information in the aforementioned document to ensure that communication errors like this one are not repeated.

Our staff is trained to provide service that meets the highest quality standards in the industry and to offer the warm hospitality that has always been a Royal Resorts hallmark. We regret that you didn't feel you were taken care of and that our service was found wanting. Your comments are important to us and we are taking steps to improve our handling of such situations and our guest service.

We sincerely hope that you enjoy the rest of your Caribbean vacation.

Warm Regards

My husband were originally going to stay at The Royal Cancun but had to move our trip out a few days so were rebooked at the Royal Islander.
I must say the Royal Islander is a beautiful older resort. The grounds were immaculate and everything was super clean. The service all around was very good, everyone there is super nice and helpful.
The beach is beautiful and clean and plenty of places to lay out and relax. We had an ocean front room but i think any room facing out would be nice as long as you are above the 1st floor. if you get a 1st floor room, i would suggest being pool front.
We did visit the Royal Cancun to see what we missed and it was a nice hotel also but we didn't care for the beach as much. Much more traffic and people selling you stuff and a really small stretch of beach there.
The ocean is very calm so it would make the most sense for people with children to visit that resort. it's like a pool with no waves or currents and is very clear.
Our favorite place to eat at The Royal Islander was Pacos Tacos. They had the best steak tacos, and if you like spicy salsa ask for the "white salsa". It was amazing!
We are definitely interested in checking out more Royal Resorts on our next trip to Cancun, I hear the Royal Sands is really nice and is all inclusive.
If you visit here, be sure to leave the resort and walk down the street to The Blue Gecko for some of the best homemade tacos of your life! We ate there twice but could have easily eaten there 4-5 times. They are ranked really well on Trip Advisor- so check them out! It's an easy walk…

Enjoy!

Room Tip: Ocean Front Room was beautiful and I would recommend it.

Everything about this place was beautiful. Overall we had a great time. But....an issue arose with our room. After the first day I noticed a smell of urine but let it go thinking it may just have been my imagination. Well it finally got to me so I started to investigate, tore my bed apart and found a pladtic liner on my bed stained with urine. Immediately took it off the bed and removed it from the room. I went to the front desk to inform them and asked for something to be done, mattress change, room changed or just something. The man at the front desk pretty much did nothing, just kind of blew me off telling me it would be ok. Sooooo, my 2 week stay in that smelly room just made me realize, that will be my last visit there.

Dear Guest,

We are very sorry for the annoyance you describe in your review. Our House Keeping department did actually visit your villa and changed the sheets which, according to management, solved the problem. We are taking notice of your comments and will review our procedures to find the opportunity areas where we can improve so this experience is not shared by any other of our customers.

We always strive to provide the highest satisfaction levels to our customers and we regret we didn't achieve this goal with you. Please accept a sincere apology for the inconvenient.

We hope you've enjoyed the rest of your Caribbean Vacation.

Warm Regards.

The Royal Islander is a Time Share property. Our one bedroom suite with a kitchen and bath was comfortable and easily accommodates 4 adults. The resort is beautiful. The beach is amazing but the ocean is rough even for good swimmers. The pool is easily located in the center of the resort. There is a shuttle bus that takes guests to sister resorts. Bus service is good but the schedule is poor as guests often wait for the bus a long time. Resort staff is courteous, helpful and friendly. The restaurants provide good service and excellent food. The resort has a mini supermarket where guests can purchase food items, bakery goods, liquors, snacks, etc.. All in all this resorts offers a wonderful stay.

Room Tip: All rooms provide a comfortable stay.
