“Relaxing Week in Paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2013

Just returned home from a fantastic relaxing vacation at the Royal Islander. Own a villa week 41 and shared with family and friends this week. The villas are spacious, very clean and comfortable and having individual thermostats in each room allows all my guests to control their comfort level. Having a full kitchen allows one to have meals "at home." Their are small convenience stores on the complex or you can go in to the town of Cancun to go to Walmart or their Superama for groceries. Staff at the Islander are attentive, courteous, friendly and very helpful in making the week enjoyable for everyone. The beach, the pools, activities, Happy Hour, Karaoke/DJ, the restaurants, ceramics, new friends met and old friends renewed, activities, etc-the whole week a wonderful experience. Easy to get around on local busses and/or the hotel shuttles among Royal resorts. And having Captain's Cove and Pancho and Willy's as part of the package adds another restaurant venue to the charge program. By having a room charge card, you do not carry cash around with you all the time. Only 51 weeks till we are back again!!

Room Tip: All rooms have an ocean view ,so that is not an issue. Resort is very quiet ,so noise not a huge iss...

We had a suite on the 9th floor. It was two bedrooms with a small kitchen and a living room. One bedroom has two queen beds and the second bedroom had a king bed. Both have their own bathrooms. The room was very clean and it was nice that each room (including the main room) have their own thermostat so we could control our own room vs. what others in the house considered too hot or too cold.

The food onsite was great, we LOVED Paco's Tacos. The Grouper Tacos were amazing. You can order food at the pool bar from Paco's and the main restaurant and they will bring it out to you. There is also a small outdoor bar with TV's that were playing football. That was nice to have as well. The pool bar is pretty good, the staff was fun and very nice. The only drawback is we wish they had a TV like the Royal Sands does. It was nice to watch the football games on Sunday and Thursday while swimming in the pool. But it was still a good time. The pool is a decent size and they have a kids pool. You also have access to go next door to the Royal Caribbean which has a HUGE pool with volleyball in the pool and a much larger kids pool.

A few people I traveled with purchased massages from Gerson (who was AWESOME! We love him!). They enjoyed their massages so much that they went back for seconds later in the week.

The only thing I wasn't fond of with the Islander was the beach access. Mind you it's not difficult it's just very different from their other hotels and makes the beach seem further away then the others in their portfolio. It was nice to have bathrooms on the first floor close to the beach walkway, but I just hated that the pool was 4 levels up from the beach. But of course the beach is beautiful and the staff for drinks was very attentive. There are even iguana's that hang out if you go to the end of the wall by the empty lot. :)

All in all we had a wonderful experience at the Islander and I would absolutely return (pending they don't go all inclusive which for me will be a deal breaker). The staff is awesome, all very kind and easy to talk with. Service all around was fantastic from check in to check out. I'm just crossing my fingers they avoid the all inclusive nonsense that the other Royal's have gone to.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have a view... there are some rooms on the ground floor where you can only see the poo...

It's like coming home...I love this place! I was here two weeks ago and once again enjoyed myself. What's not to like...wonderful pool, access to Royal Mayan, Royal Sands and Royal Carribean, gorgeous turquoise water and powder white sandy beaches. This is my 4th trip and I have met so many nice folks who come year after year. Only hiccup was tropical storm Karen but she came through one day and was gone. It is a wonderful resort with a first class staff. It is a family oriented resort so not for the spring breakers. You come here to relax not to party. You can always go to the party zone via the bus. Costs $1 US to ride one way. Love, love, love it will come again.

Room Tip: All the rooms are pretty nice...can't go wrong. I've stayed in a one and two bedroom and th...

We bought week 40 8 years ago, and haven't missed a year yet. For my wife's birthday in February, we rented a villa for the week. So, you know I like the place alot. The other reviews tell you about the many restaurants, all of which are pretty good. One, the Conquistador, is truly excellent. We like to eat at outside restaurants: and I highly recommend La Habichuela Sunset an upscale Mexican Menu, Puerto Madera, upscale steaks and seafood, Peter's a small restaurant downtown with a Holland-born chef, La Parilla, downtown Mexican fun, and Lorenzillo's for upscale seafood. Take a cab. Enjoy.
Book a trip to X-Plor for zip-lines beyond compare and a chance to explore the stalactites in underground caves. It is a lot of walking.. not for the frail.
X-Caret is a wonderful snorkeling, swim with dolphins and enjoy a small zoo experience. Stay for the show. It is extra, but worth every penny. Best is to include dinner with the show. The food is not bad (not great) but the seating is well worth the cost. Singing dancing, and demonstrations that are really worth the money.
We like to snorkel at Xel-Ha (everything is included: drinks, food, gear, etc) where there is a large lagoon with a net to keep the predators out. You can easily spend a full day there with many activities. And then schedule a dinner and show at X-Caret.
The Royal Islander has a "golf tournament" four days a week at four different golf courses. We both play. The TPC and Playa Paraiso are top notch the other two are very good. There really is no tournament.. I guess there could be, but you get a good discount on green fees and transportation. Instead of $169 at TPC the tournament was $89. The Islander will loan you free clubs. They're just okay. Want to pay $30? They have good Taylor Made sets. Rent brand new top-shelf clubs at the course for about $40. I had new Callaway set.
See you in 2014 at the Royal Islander!

This facility is a great family oriented vacation spot. If you want to tour everything is close by, but if you just want to relax pull up a lawn chair and read a book by the pool!
This facility has lot of things to do for all ages, during the week a Schedule is posted on what where when activities are to take place some of the things include water aerobics , bingo, kids parties and a welcome party were the booze is free! Upon arrival the next day you will be invited to an orientation meeting which is optional but I suggest it for first timers .enjoy!

were to start, the staff is about as dumb as they come. concierge arranged 2 trips for us. the first was snorkeling to isla mujeres, don't go it sucks a total waste of time and money. 2nd when we arrived in the lobby to board the bus for chetzen itza the reservation was never made by the concierge, he said it was our responsibility. the food is average at best at cost a premium. the rooms were clean but the bed sucked my back still hurts. too far from town and the taxi service cost 20 bucks in the hotel zone but only 2 bucks in town, they sure stick it to you. we wont go back to this place again.

Room Tip: try another resort

Picked this place based on the reviews only to be quite disappointed. First, its location is not ideal; located towards the end of the hotel zone making it hard to go anywhere but the other few giant resorts around. Try an hotel located no more then km5 for example so when tired of the food or want to get out, it's not such a long hike.

Secondly, our reservation came with a promotion ( free breakfast ) BUT they refused to honor it. Only after almost an hour on the phone did we finally get that sorted out.

Room is big and almost clean ( hair in bed and a bit of mold in shower ), a bit outdated. The elevators are slow and far and few between. The air conditioning are loud and start and stop constantly; I did not find a way to keep the fan on.

The pool is nice, so is the beach BUT the bar staff is rude. The same goes for the restaurant staff, not rude but have personally of rocks. You feel like they'd rather be anywhere else but here. Also, the daily activities around the pool are loud.

The food is VERY generic.

All around, a poor experience.
