“Relax, Relax, Relax”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2012

Stayed from January 28, 2011-February 4th. Weather was nice. Not too hot and not too cool. A little humidity but not stifling. They said it rained but other than a drop here or there we had no rain until we were leaving.
Hotel was very nice. Not extravagant. 200 rooms and all adults.
If you don't like to have fun, this might not be the place for you. We are a partying bunch and never had a problem finding a place to get together for a lot of laughs.
Rooms were clean and towel animals almost every day. 2 Bottles of water when we arrived and to get extra we left a note for the housekeeper. Yolanda was AWESOME!! Only concern is that one day the sliding door was not locked when we returned to our room but on 4th floor and everything was fine. Safe in room that opened with key (Lose it and it's $50).
Check-in process worked but different than we were use to. Everyone was directed to the bar where desk staff checked names and went to desk to get keys, towel cards, and safe key. This might have been because another group was checking in at the same time.
Got there about 3pm so were able to go right to the room. View was beautiful on ocean side but you don't see the sunset from there. Almost all rooms have king bed so if you aren't a couple you might need a cot. Cot is a little less than twin size (from what our friends told us).
Open restaurants rotate so it is good to check out the activities board in the lobby to make dining plans. Burger bar was open most of the time and was really good until the last day.
Food was good and several options. Only one buffet and it is primarily open for breakfast and some lunches. Other options are Sumo (sushi type), Barn (steaks and other choices), Pier 12 (fish dishes), one dressier restaurant but we didn't eat there. Room service is also very nice option. Service in restaurants could be slow at times so don't go if you are in a rush or have a time constraint.
VERY nice jewelry store, on site. Upscale shopping, general sundries and souvenier shopping also on site. All very nice and accomodating.
Spa was AWESOME!! and staff were wonderful. MD on site as well as good size exercise room. We didn't see that until I went to the spa but didn't need it as spent most of the time in the ocean or on the beach.
Bus is available about a block away and cabs are always at the ready.
Visited Great Parnassus for one meal. Very family focused and much larger. Seemed noisy but large choice of restaurants and shopping. I think there were seven floors. Felt like you were in a ship. Seemed more up-to-date and more commercial than Golden Parnassus. Food was awesome.
Shows every night at Golden Parnassus were good. Staff try to get crowd involvement. Best entertainment was first night at Mexican party. All I can say is wear layers of clothes or you could end up down to your underwear :). You have to check out the Sixties Bar. Loved it there.
Not much topless going on but not unacceptable.
Beach was beautiful. Some seaweed but it's the beach. Shells came right up with the waves.
Nice pool and jacuzzi. Both clean. Didn't utilize either though. Liked the ocean too much.
Great couples location for relaxation and romance.
Would go back again!!

Room Tip: Ask for 4th floor or above. Not sure about view from lower floors.

I was here on vacation with 2 friends, celebrating our 40th birthdays. To say we had a blast would be an understatement. Before arriving, we were somewhat concerned about the quality of the food, but for no reason! The food was great! I have stayed at all inclusives before, and this had the best selection and quality. A nice mix of authentic Mexican mixed with typical American. Breezes, which is a snack bar open until 6am, has a menu but it is not always posted. There is a shredded chicken sandwich that is out of this world! We had a bay side room on the first floor. The only noise we heard was from what must be the laundry room. Thankfully, we are heavy sleepers and it didn't bother us. Our room was clean and the bathroom was very large.

What we weren't anticipating, was how AMAZING the staff is. They are BY FAR the most devoted, caring, fun, entertaining staff ever! You will never have an empty glass in front of you. They bring just the right amount of adult atmosphere to the adult-only scene. Jose and Carlos at the Tiki bar are exceptional! Tip them well! So many people brought their own giant mugs for drinks. They will fill your mug up with whatever it is you want, and if you don't know, they are bartending geniouses and will whip something up! Be sure to try the Mexican Viagra!

We checked out the Michael Jackson impersonator show, which was fun. It was "low budget" so to speak, but worth the hour and pretty entertaining! The ocean was very rough, with a strong rip current every day. We went in just above our knees for some body surfing, but it was tough. We watched 2 people get rescued in an hour one day. Adhere to the warnings. That being said, the sand is fantastically soft and white, the sunrises are AMAZING, and the shells I saw people pulling out were enormous! Be sure to sign your name on a shell at the Dolphin Bar, which is the bar with the swings.

This is a great resort for the price! You can't beat it, and I'd go back in a second!

A perfect getaway for for couples and other adults. No kids is a vacation for us. We are a childless couple, and specifically looked for someplace that catered to us. This is it! It is not the newest hotel, or the biggest hotel, or having the most amenities...but that's okay. That is why we chose it.
The staff is amazing, and go out of their way to help you have a wonderful time. Pricing of the resort also helped us to choose it. They have a sister property that is more geared towards families that we toured. Told some friends that have children about it as well. Would definitely recommend it to others. Food choices were diverse and always delicious. Drinks were plentiful for those that wanted to indulge. Mini-bar in room was convenient if only for sodas when needed.

Room Tip: Higher up rooms are less noisy, but lower is closer to the bars. So choice depends on what you want...

While very happy with my recent stay, I feel (as a travel consultant) that there are some things that can be improved.
I would be very happy to stay again as I must state that you have a GREAT staff! They are wonderful.
The restaurants and food were very good, lots of variety and very tasty, bars were well stocked and drinks good. The wait staff (waiters) AMAZING. Room service was very good and speedy. No matter what the hour....
I also visited the Spa (on site) twice. VERY NICE, EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE, CARING, CLEAN, JUST AMAZING. Good quality products, services and staff. Very accommodating and massages WONDERFUL. I had 2 spa days and well worth it!
A/C worked great (no problem there) and balconies a great place to just relax.

The hotel was very clean and always being well maintained by the staff.
What I feel can improved is the fact that there are charges for the Internet (TOO expensive and really should be FREE ), Bureaus for the customers clothes (not enough places to put clothes, as I lived out of my suitcase), Small Refrigerators in the rooms (WITHOUT CHARGES) as you are an all inclusive.
We stayed at the Golden (adults only) and I chose not to go to the Great. Did hear that it looked like the inside of a cruise ship and had a lot of different restaurants that were interchangeable. Some people I did talk with did take the shuttle over, I like what I had and was very happy.
These 3 things would be my ONLY reasons for not returning.
Room Tip: We stayed facing the lagoon. If facing the pool I would think that may be noisy (although I do not know for sure) but got to see the sunset every day, and at the pool in the morning watched the sunrise. The best of both worlds.

Room Tip: original review ended up on the Great Parnassus site. sorry!

Let me just start off by saying that we are by no means a high class couple...we live in Wisconsin and live a normal middle class life. We are 25 and 26 years old and went on a much needed beach get-away for our delayed honeymoon from January 28 through February 3rd. The price for this trip was amazing for an adults-only resort, so we did not have extremely high expectations, especially after reading all the reviews. People who come to this hotel expecting 5 stars are out of their mind. The Golden is a great resort for the price and we were pleasantly surprised. Let me start off with some of the very few cons...

-If you're younger, you will be in the minority. For us this wasn't a bad thing, we can get along with any age group. No big deal.
-Service may take a bit longer, but it isn't because the workers don't care, it's because there just aren't enough of them.
-The acoustics in the hotel are horrible. There is a warning on the balcony doors saying if you leave the sliding door open it will create a wind tunnel and your hotel door will slam LOUD...it is no joke. People do not follow this at all and doors are slamming at all hours of the night and day. I am the lightest sleeper I know, so I brought ear plugs already knowing the hotel was loud. I slept fine.
-Erika at the front desk is not human I'm pretty sure. Try to deal with Laura, she is a sweetheart.
-There is a lack of entertainment at night if you don't plan to go out to the clubs or have other people with you. In the time that we were there it didn't seem that too many people were hanging out at the tiki bar after dinner time, and we found the Sixties bar very boring and a bit creepy to be honest.

Now for the good things, which there are a lot of!
-The workers at this hotel are amazing...hard working, funny, and always trying to please you. Tip them and you will be rewarded. They do have Absolut, Bacardi, Smirnoff, and other top shelf brands...you just have to ask for them. We had Bubba mugs and they would fill them up with the better brands for us. I cannot say enough about the workers.
-The beach is beautiful, although the water is a bit rough. People are always picking up garbage so there are not many seagulls. Never had a problem getting a beach chair either. It is very loud by the pool with the music and entertainment staff, so the beach is much quieter.
-Our room was beautiful, we paid for the ocean view which we thought was worth it. Be aware though, the balcony doors do lock and we did get locked out once and had to climb down from the second floor. Luckily it wasn't higher! The lighting in the bathroom isn't the greatest but I didn't find it as bad as some people said. We tipped our maid $5 on the first day and she didn't so anything extra for us, so I'm not sure if that was worth it.
-The food was amazing, I love seafood so I ate as much of it as I could but my husband always thought the chicken and beef tasted a little off, which it usually does in another country. I didn't have a favorite restaurant, I liked them all. My meal suggestions are the coconut shrimp at Pier 12, the filet mignon at Old Barn (order one temp below what you would normally get in the states), seafood ragout at Shangri-la, and any sushi at Sumo...yum! The Mexican station at lunch was to die for...I wasn't crazy about the omlets at breakfast because they often overcooked the eggs. The burgers and fries at the Breeze were always a perfect snack as well.
-The Pool party on Saturday night was hilarious, we took part in the "perfect couple" competion but were eliminated early on. The bbq food was very good, and the entertainment was great. Also a perfect time to meet other people.
-The entertainment staff were always making me giggle, they have such funny phrases like "shake it to shake it" and love to call people "white boy" or "white girl". They played tons of games by the pool during the day to partake in.

Overall we had a great time at the Golden. Don't listen to the bad reviews, people will complain about anything...rough towels, poor lighting, damp rooms. And we did see those complainers at the front desk. But why ruin your vacation and throw all that money down the drain? Just enjoy it while you can. Remember, it's Mexico! You get what you pay for. You just need to have the right expections. If you're looking for a quiet, luxurious experience, this is not the place for you. If you want 5 stars, go pay to stay at the Ritz Carlton next door. But I can tell you that we didn't see ONE person on their beach for the entire week, and I guarantee they weren't having nearly as much fun as the guests at the Golden!

Room Tip: Higher rooms on the north side are quieter. Pay for the ocean view, it's beautiful!

We just returned from staying 4 days and 3 nights at the golden parnassus, We had a wonderful time! I liked how it was a smaller resort, you could run to your room fromt he beach in minutes. Also liked that it was adults only, really felt like a vacation with no kids around! The customer service was great, Leo the bell hop was wonderful and helped us with everything we asked! The food was great! I did not think the drinks were watered down at all! Sometimes a little too strong for my taste. Everyone works so hard and does a great job. The Spa is wonderful too! I cannot wait to return to the Golden!!

I want to first say that this place is not as bad as some people play it out to be. If you are looking for a top of the line, ritzy hotel, this isn't for you.

This is the first time I've been out of the country, let alone Cancun, and I really do not have anything to compare to. However, I will break this down into some categories. Mind you, this review is coming about a month late, as we stayed from January 5th to the 15th (11 days)

CHECK IN AND ROOM: We were some of the lucky ones who were not "pushed" to the Great Parnasses because they overbooked. When we arrived, a very nice lady came over and dealt with our travel agent (and close friend, who came with us). They brought us house drinks while our room was being prepared. Because we arrived at the hotel around 1:30 pm, our room wasn't immediately ready. That wasn't a problem, though, because we were all hungry and this gave us the opportunity to try out the buffet.
We had the lagoon side, which was quiet and very peaceful. We had a nice view of the moon, at night, and the lagoon. The room was small and did not have a mini fridge or a dresser. The safe was also very small. Those were really my only complaints of the room, though.

FOOD AND DRINK: I must say, the waitstaff was absolutely top notch. They were very friendly, incredibly hard working, and always had a smile on their face. Very different from the work ethic of America. It was a very nice experience. The hotel had several different restaurants; The Pier (seafood restaurant), Sumo (Japanese), The Old Barn (Steakhouse), Shangri La (High class), The Buffet, The bars, and a small little place that was open until 2 am. I thought the food, in EVERY restaurant, was great. I understand you can't please everybody, but for the price we paid, I was very, very pleased with everything, INCLUDING the buffet. Now, I suffer from IBS, pretty bad. So when it comes to food, I'm a pretty harsh critic. While I did suffer, it was NOT because of the food. I continued eating and gorging myself. The Old Barn was by far the best, though. The drinks, yes, they were slightly watered down. But this is how I look at it: It's all inclusive. I'm not there to get drunk everyday. I'm there to relax and have a good time. The fact that the drinks were watered down only meant that you could keep drinking. The waitresses would come around constantly and refill your glasses, so a constant flow was not a problem. If you wanted more alcohol, or better quality, all you had to do was ask.

HOTEL PROPERTY (AND EVERYTHING ELSE): I found the property to be incredibly well maintained. The beach was gorgeous and although the water was rough most of the time we were there, it was still a fantastic time. My only complaint about that, would be the jacuzzi not being hot enough. The groundskeeper constantly came by and emptied our ashtray and you could see maintenance taking care of whatever issues arose. I also found that the other guests were incredibly friendly. We met a lot of fantastic people there, who were repeat guests. To me, that says something. The entertainment staff, I thought, were very engaged in what they did. The music was plentiful and so were the games. Not many people participated, though. The beach party that they had on Saturday night was outrageous and very entertaining.

The surrounding area was also very beautiful. My fiance' and I went to Chichen Itza, one day, booked through the Apple Agent at the hotel. We also went to the Kukulcan Plaza one day, and the larger plaza further down, the next. It only rained heavily the last Saturday that we were there, which to me, wasn't a big deal. We were there for 11 days and had had amazing weather.

My final verdict would be that I would definitely go back to this hotel. I don't like large complexes and wide open spaces, so to me, this was a very comfortable setting where I could enjoy myself, eat and drink as much as I pleased, and just enjoy my time in Mexico.

Room Tip: The Lagoon View is much quieter than the Beach Side and personally, I think it's a better view.
