“Continues to be an experience ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2014

I have dined at the restaurant on several occasions and it continues to be on par with any restaurant anywhere in the world. The escargots are unmatchable. Really fresh food, and a true dining experience. Visit the place if you have TIME to enjoy the food. You will not be in and out in an hour. This is not a high volume restaurant. They take their time preparing the food.

Great food experience, gracious hosts, and very romantic setting

“We give you a Michelin star... Thank you for a wonderful evening...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2014

We have not been to cancun for 7 years and all our old haunts had disappeared.... so we were getting a little nervous... until we remembered TRIP ADVISOR and found Du Mexique...
We had a wonderful experience of fine dining in Cancun, Mexico... eating delicious food and drinking a good spanish reserve wine... I have to mention the bathroom... a truly wonderful experience... and last but not at all least Alain who cooked our meal and Sonya who attended us... were delightful... People who know me, know when I say 'I met my divine sister'... Please go there for a wonderful experience of french cuisine... and so much more... We'll be back next year for sure... Barbara and Tom x

“A Great Birthday Dinner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2014

The food was outstanding! Better than a lot of restaurants in Paris. This will be the first place we book when we go back to Cancun. Beside the food the host & hostess are wonderful I'm sorry for not getting her name & then being to embarrassed to ask but she makes a "party" for you with her charm & attention one of those womenwho makes you feel special. The food, a litter than air pastry with Foie Gras, a rack of lamb, bread as only the Europeans seem to do ,it is the staff of life, My husband had fish that he enjoyed.. now back to me, they brought a little B'day cake that was unbelievable the chocolate superb . Everything was so festive it was just the 2 of us and it was a party. In the French tradition I was given the candle on my cake to keep for luck.I can't wait to return!!!

“Somewhat expensive, but worth it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2014

Having read the reviews of Du Mexique, I was eager to try it. To get there from the Hotel Zone you can take a cab but it's much less expensive to just take any bus north and get off at the big traffic circle at the edge of downtown Cancun. It's just a 5-minute walk from there. (The cost is US$3. round trip for two on the bus vs. waaay more for a cab.) It's in a lovely contemporary space in a converted house and has only 7 tables and one seating per night, so advance reservations are essential. We arrived a few minutes early and were warmly greeted by both Sonja and her husband, Chef Alain, who apologized that we would have to wait 5 minutes to be seated. We assured them that that was no problem. I'm sure you've read some of the other reviews here and are aware of the attention everyone gets from both Sonja and Alain, and our visit was no exception. It bears repeating, however, that the menu is in French and so we had to wait for Alain to come over and explain each dish to us. (He talks very softly, so you need to pay attention.) It would be so much simpler if there was an English translation printed on the menu, which would also give diners some additional time to consider their options.
A complimentary appetizer of duck terrine and crispy bread was very good, as was my shrimp soup (available with or without cream - I had it without). I had the sliced duck in a spicy orange sauce and my wife had the lamb chops. She pronounced the lamb "excellent" and the duck would have been if the skin had been crisp. Unfortunately, it was soggy so there was no textural contrast. The flavors, however, were very good. A soft chocolate terrine-like cake with vanilla ice cream and sugar-coated fresh berries for dessert was delicious. There has been some criticism of the wine list and the prices. It's a small list and the prices go from high to stratospheric, but we found a decent carmenere for about $40. Some wines are available by the glass but they aren't listed - you have to ask.
A handshake from Alain and a hug from Sonja with a rise for my wife on our way our completed the evening. Overall conclusion: Du Mexique is a very good, personable restaurant which is worth the cost. A few small lapses kept me from giving it an Excellent rating but we will be back on our next trip and try it again

“DuMexique Continues to Impress!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2014

Last night was our second visit to DuMexique and it was every bit as wonderful as the first. We were greeted at the door by Chef Alain and Sonya who now feel like old friends. On tonight's menu our appetizer selections were the Three Cheese Souffle, Foie Gras with Truffles in Pastry, Roquefort Creme Brûlée, and Coeur de Romaine Mimosa salad. We all sampled each other's choices and all of them were superb! Our choices for dinner were Tian de Crevettes aux Petales de Rose, which was perfectly prepared HUGE shrimp in a cone of thinly sliced zucchini with a rose petal sauce. Filet of Salmon with Maple Syrup which received huge raves. The crispy skin had been grilled in maple syrup and was a huge hit with one of the ladies! Jambonette de Canard was duck cooked in an orange sauce. I am told the duck was extremely tender and the sauce was a wonderful complex flavour - way better than the "normal" orange sauce. My husband ordered the Entrecôte Bordelaise (ribeye steak with Bordelaise sauce) and it arrived sliced and cooked to perfection. The outside was crisp-charred with the meat being pink in the middle, just as ordered. The bordelaise was the best he'd ever had! Everyone raved about their choices. For dessert we all shared the requisite Chocolate Souffle (Chef Alain is the soufflé master!!!) as well as Chocolate Fondant (to die for!!!) and strawberries with cracked peppercorns and a delicious vodka sauce. Everything was so delicious!! All four of us raved about our evening and we can't wait to return. Thank you, merci beaucoup, and gracias, to Chef Alain and Sonya for a very memorable evening of fine dining!
