Our family of three (two adults, one teen) stayed here from December 30th until January 7th on a Sunwing Vacations package. This a detailed review but if you are skimming Trip Advisor, here is the bottom line:
This is not a 5-star hotel as advertised, not even close. It is a small 330-plus room property that, despite renovations, is over 25 years old. However, if you want a more quiet, authentic vacation with excellent service from top to bottom, this fits the bill. If you want a JW Marriott, Hard Rock or Westin (North American experience) stay at those hotels, not at the OMNI.
Vacation Club/Timeshare folks are on site near the reception/check-in but did not bother us, just say OLA, smile and move on if you are not interested.
The property is compact and elevator service is never an issue. The gym needs some work as most of the treadmills stick and there is no stretching ares while the Spa services are nice, but limited and pricey. It has 3 pools and it is a 1-minute walk (max) from the base of the hotel to the beach. They also have two tennis courts/basketball courts with beach volleyball and soccer available. On the down side the beach chairs are just real hard plastic while the pool chairs are a solid mesh, but with only two settings -- sleep or recline. As for the rooms, spacious and clean. Both the activity pool and beach bar have swim up/sit in areas.
It has 7 restaurants (some are dual purpose) including a buffet, snack bar, Mexican grill, Indonesian fusion, great Italian and beach restaurant. Food selection at the buffet can be limiting at times so it is best to go to some of the restaurants like Deva on the beach at night for Asian cooking or DaVinci for Italian and gourmet food -- which is excellent, if only the accordion guy could turn the volume down a bit, but I digress. Small touches like nice Riedel wine glasses in the restaurants help as do suggestions from waiters and if something is not on the menu or you want your meal modified, just ask. Alberado's Sunset Grill should be open on the Lagoon Side by mid-2014 or earlier.
The big complaint here was the charge of $70 to $140 extra per person for a special New Years Eve buffet? And the regular buffet that evening was abysmal, I had more food choices in my college days cupboard.
Before delving into the negatives/issues of our vacation (see below), the staff who helped us, got to know our names and/or food and beverage preferences and did their best to address small issues deserve a shout out:
Front Desk -- Iris, Rosalie, Norma were always attentive
Concierge -- Jesus, a fountain of knowledge and helpful
Lobby Bar -- Xavier, Antonio and Gabriela ... while they did not have Crown Royal, they made my Canadian Mist and Coke a must drink of the day, every day, sometimes more than once
Beach Resto and Bar Area -- Luis and Consuela, always smiled and were prompt with service
DaVinci -- Enrique (going strong for almost 25 years at the OMNI, wow!)
Housekeeping -- Teresa was excellent
Front Door -- Nicolas and Carlos ... usually the first smile we saw each day, thanks guys!
There is a vacation reps area and tours desk near the business centre (Canadian spelling, eh! :-). Lots to choose from but we did not venture out, we've done them before when in the Mayan but if you are looking for one excursion, the catamaran day on and around Isla Mujeres is good from what I heard and if when we return, we plan to snorkel the underwater museum.
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO (Managing expectations)
-- At 100% occupancy, pool and beach chairs can be scarce, get your towels out early
-- In the rain, the marble and concrete environs make for a slippery experience, and despite constant mopping up, be careful and prudent
-- When it rains, the lobby is the only real gathering point and can get quite loud with two TVs and the animation team doing their thing as well (Trivia, Bingo, etc.)
-- Evening shows ... they have no stage to really make this worthwhile, they try, but it is what it is -- start at 8, done by 9
-- Free WIFI is intermittent and slow ... use the business centre to the right of the main lobby from an entrance perspective for WIFI or desktop access, BUT the OMNI has to invest and fix this issue, ASAP!!!
-- Minibar service is inconsistent from our experience and from asking other guests
If you have other questions, please send me an email via Trip Advisor and I would be happy to elaborate further, etc.
