“Great Beach...Bad Food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2004

If you are looking for luxury, this is NOt your hotel. If you simply want to get away to a beautiful beach and don't plan to spend much time in your room or at the resort, its a decent enough value. We just got back from a 5 day stay, our first time to Mexico. We booked an all inclusive package, but I would highly discourage anyone else from doing so at the Flamingo. THE FOOD IS SIMPLY BAD. The best part was the breakfast buffet..but from there your meals go downhill, with the food at the Albatross (the only place you MUST make a reservation for) almost unedible. Oh and the "burgers" at the pool bar- NO BEEF IN THEM..they were veggie burgers. It is true what they say in other reviews about the 2 drink minimum at the bars also..and one guy got yelled at just for ordering 2 at a time. By the way..you are not getting Coronas here..this is strictly Dos Equis on tap. (But it was always ice cold). One thing that really disappointed me was that there was NO authentic Mexican food there....but they seem to love to serve Italian. The wait staff at the buffet were always very nice. But the bartenders were generally stonefaced. I would recommend that you take the tours, get on the beach a great deal, and EAT OUT. Margaritaville was excellent and right across the street.

“Flamingo was OK”

We just returned after spending one week at the Flamingo Hotel. We were a little apprehensive after reading the reviews since many of them were negative about the place (although the majority of them were positive) We had a very good experience! The hotel has a great location, right across the street from the most popular bars and a mall, and it also had a great beach. The hotel was very clean and well maintained. We were not able to get an ocean view room the first 3 nights but I requested to be put on list to change and we had a great ocean view room for the rest of the stay. I think the $10 I gave the desk person helped. They have only two swimming pools but they are placed away from each other and one is full of activites and a swim up bar and the other is quiet with a large deck for sun bathing overlooking the ocean. That is were we spent most of out time! The main problem I read about in previous reviews was with the food. Breakfast was good. lunch ok and dinner not so good. We ended up eating out for most of the evening meals, which was fun, but I'm sure a problem for someone on a budget.
All and all the hotel was fine, not great, I just wish they would fix the quality of their dinners.

“Great place for your money. Lighten up people!”

Most of the people writing the reviews I've read are a bit uptight.
What do you expect for the price you payed?!! I just returned from the Flamingo on 2/16. I spent 6 days there with my wife and two of our friends. We all had a great time and would return to the Flamingo. The price was fantastic and it's exactly what we expected. For those of you complaining about the Flamingo, take the fish hooks out of your pockets and stay at one of the Palace resorts. I'm sure you'll find something wrong with those resorts as well.

The food was descent. We ate at the Albatros the first night and it was okay. We ate most of our meals at the buffet and DID NOT GET SICK FROM THE FOOD. Those complaining that they got sick from the food are full of it. If you followed these people around for the time they were there you would probably find that they drank a ton of booze and that's what was making them sick. Like I said, we ate at the buffet for 6 days and the four of us were fine.

When we checked in we requested an ocean front room but they were all taken. We tipped the guy at the front desk and he added our name to a list for an ocean front room when one became available. We were told to check back in two days at 10a.m. which we did. When we went to the desk two days later, they already had us assigned to an ocean front room and it was a beautiful view.

There is a two drink minimum, per person, each trip to the bar. This wasn't a problem because I can only drink one at a time. When your glasses are empty, step back up to the bar. Raul has no problem pouring you two more. Your rooms have a mini bar that's included with the "all inclusive" package and they re-stock it every morning when they clean your room.

I recommend you take a trip into downtown and go to the El Pascador ("The Fisherman") restaurant. Take the R1 bus to the Keewee market, walk across the street and walk another two blocks and look for the small sign which points down the alley. It's one of the best seafood meals we ever had. Worth the trip and reasonably priced. Those of you who complained about the food at the Flamingo probably never went and ate downtown. Too bad. I'm sure you enjoyed your McDonald's and Outback Steakhouse.

In all, the trip and hotel was great and we recommend it to anyone. If you want a descent place to stay that's priced right, clean and has a very friendly staff, then you won't be disappointed. Have fun!!!!

“Will be back next year”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2004

We stayed at the Flamingo Feb 3-12. There were eight people in our group and all agreeed that it was a hotel that we would be returning to again. We had roadside rooms and could have had ocean side after the first two nights but changed our minds because we could sit out in the evenings and people watch (We have done the oceanside on otherstays) and this wasn't springbreak so it wasn't noisey. Rooms were super clean, staff was friendly and helpful, Food was the same as and other resort on a five day rotation Buffett was small but there was always beaf, pork, chicken and fish. Because of a smaller buffett food awas always fresh. We had no trouble getting drinks or being waited on; could be because we tiped a dollar here and there. It got better results than we get stateside. If you expect a fancy resort than go to the one that charges double. If you want to get out of the cold and not morgage the house than this is a good place for the average person to stay.

“Not great or even good, just okay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2004

My friend & I got back from the Flamingo on Saturday. We did get very sick from the buffet food our third night there & were afraid to eat much at the hotel after that. The breakfast was okay, there is always yogurt, fruit & cereal available. The desserts ALWAYS looked much better than they tasted which was quite disappointing. As for alcohol, we never had a problem getting some & in fact at the Albatros restaurant they were eager to pour shot after shot of tequila for us.
We didn't spend much time in the lobby bar as it was always very smoky.
As for the problem a reviewer mentioned about getting ice, there are several freezers filled with individual sacks of ice. Many people created coolers out of their trash cans with the bagged ice & took them to the pool & the beach. The Flamingo is a good budget hotel. The beach is absolutely gorgeous, the rooms are very clean & the staff seemed friendly for the most part. I would recommend it if you are on a budget & don't care about the most up to date furnishings or need the most comfortable bed. Getting a room with an ocean view is a must though. It was lovely to take three steps & be in the oceanview pool.
